Venmo vs Cash App: Fees, Interest and Which One to Trust
Venmo for sending money to friends and splitting bills; Cash App if you want the app to be a second bank account with a paycheck landing in it. On our
Venmo is PayPal's peer-to-peer payments app in the United States: money moves with a note attached, bills get split among named friends, and the balance either sits in the app or goes to a bank. It also carries a Mastercard debit card, direct deposit with its own routing number and a cash-back programme. The trade-off is speed against fees — pulling money out instantly costs 1.75% of the amount.

Two ways out of the app, and the price gap is the whole story. A standard bank transfer is free and lands in one to three business days. An instant transfer to a debit card or bank charges 1.75% of the amount, with a floor of $0.25 and a ceiling of $25 — so moving $200 costs $3.50, and above roughly $1,430 the fee stops climbing. Paying a friend from a linked credit card adds a flat 3%, and the card issuer may treat it as a cash advance on top of that. Direct deposit runs the other way: wages can arrive up to two days before payday, using the routing and account numbers the app displays. Fees are US listings and change.
The debit card is a Mastercard with no monthly fee and no minimum balance, spending straight from the app balance. Rewards come through Venmo Stash, advertised at up to 5% cash back, with the store listing's own terms capping the payout at $100 a month. Groups handle the longer-running case: a shared trip, with expenses added by different people and a running total of who owes whom. Split does the same for one bill, dividing it line by line among named contacts rather than leaving one person to chase the rest.
The two stores disagree more sharply here than for most apps: 4.8 from over 15 million ratings on Apple's side against 4.0 from 918,000 reviews on Google's, where the app has passed 50 million installs. Worth reading the Android reviews before trusting either number. On collection, Google Play's data safety card is unusually short for a payments app — contacts and app activity, with no third-party sharing declared — while the balance itself is held by a bank partner rather than by the app. One quirk for anyone checking the listing: the developer is recorded as The Delancey Corporation, the corporate entity behind the service, not under the PayPal name.

It works, and for splitting dinner with people who already have it, nothing is faster. Use the standard transfer and the debit card and it costs nothing; reach for instant transfers regularly and 1.75% a time becomes a real bill. Read the Android reviews before committing to it as a main account — the 4.0 rating there against 4.8 on the App Store is the widest gap in this category.

Sending money from your balance or a linked bank account costs nothing, and so does the standard transfer out. Charges start when you want speed or use the wrong funding source: 1.75% for an instant transfer, and 3% for paying someone from a credit card. The debit card itself has no monthly fee.
A shared ledger for something that runs longer than one bill — a trip, a house, a season of shared costs. Anyone in the group adds expenses as they happen, and the app keeps a running total of who owes what, with a request button rather than a conversation about it later.
It is 1.75% of the amount, with a minimum of $0.25 and a maximum of $25. On a $200 transfer that is $3.50; above about $1,430 the fee is capped. The free alternative is the standard transfer, which takes one to three business days to reach the same account.
Both routes sit under the balance: standard, which is free and takes up to three business days, and instant, which pays 1.75% for the same day. The balance can also be spent directly with the debit card, which avoids the transfer question and the fee entirely.
Cash App covers the same ground and adds savings, stocks and bitcoin in one app. Zelle moves money between US bank accounts with no fee at all, but it sits inside your bank's own app and offers no purchase protection. The choice usually depends on what the person you are paying already uses.
