About Robinhood: Trading & Investing

Robinhood puts stocks, ETFs, options, futures, crypto and prediction-market contracts in one commission-free account, and sells a $5 membership that pays 3.35% on uninvested cash and matches 3% of IRA contributions. Fractional orders start at $1. Leaving costs money: a full or partial transfer to another broker carries a $100 fee, and fractional shares are sold rather than moved.

Robinhood Review: $5 Gold, 3.35% Cash, a $100 Exit Fee

Gold Costs $5 and Pays 3.35% on Cash

The membership is $5 a month or $50 a year after a 30-day trial, and the headline benefit is 3.35% APY on eligible brokerage cash with no cap and no minimum balance. That is $60 a year of subscription against roughly $60 of interest on $1,800 of idle cash, which sets the break-even before anything else counts. The retirement side is where it pays harder: a 3% match on IRA contributions worth up to $225 against the 2026 maximum, conditional on holding the membership a year and leaving the contribution in place for five. Futures cost $0.50 a contract and index options $0.35.

The 24 Hour Market Runs Sunday Night to Friday Night

A curated list of 1,059 stocks and ETFs trades around the clock, five days a week — Sunday 8pm to Friday 8pm Eastern — using limit orders rather than market ones. For anyone in a European or Asian time zone that removes the main obstacle to trading US equities. Prediction markets sit in their own tab, quoting real-world events as contracts: a gas-price question priced at 21%, 53% and 63% across three thresholds, alongside categories for politics, sports, economics and crypto. Crypto has its own tab with a claim of up to 3.6% more coin per dollar than rivals.

The $100 Transfer Fee and What Protection Covers

Moving an account to another broker costs $100, whether the transfer is full or partial, and fractional shares are sold for cash on the way out. Crypto cannot follow to another brokerage at all; after a full transfer, unsold coins are liquidated once five months pass. Protection comes in layers: SIPC covers up to $500,000 per account type, including $250,000 in cash, and uninvested cash swept to partner banks becomes eligible for FDIC insurance up to $2.5 million on an individual account. Crypto and futures sit outside both. Sign-in pairs device approval with two-factor codes by SMS or an authenticator app such as Duo or Google Authenticator, and passkeys exist only on iOS 16 and later. The Play data card lists financial and personal information as shared with third parties.

  • Financial and personal information is shared with third parties
  • An 834 MB install that also asks for contacts and photos

Verdict

The features are real and the pricing is aggressive: overnight trading on 1,059 tickers, a 3% retirement match and a cash rate that clears the $5 fee at about $1,800 idle. What you accept alongside them is a $100 fee to move holdings elsewhere, crypto that cannot follow you to another broker, and financial data shared with third parties. Fine as a second account; skip it as your only broker if you hold crypto and may want to move it later.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is Robinhood free to use?

Stock and ETF trades carry no commission and there is no account minimum, though small pass-through transaction fees still apply on sales. The listing shows no advertising badge and no in-app purchase badge on Android. The paid tier, billed at $5 a month, is what unlocks the higher cash rate and the larger IRA match.

2

What is the 24 Hour Market?

A list of 1,059 stocks and ETFs that can be traded 24 hours a day, five days a week, from Sunday 8pm to Friday 8pm Eastern, using limit orders. Spreads outside normal hours are usually wider, so the price you get overnight can differ noticeably from the daytime quote.

3

What does the $5 membership add?

3.35% APY on eligible brokerage cash with no cap, a 3% IRA contribution match worth up to $225, instant deposits of up to three times the portfolio value, cheaper futures and index options contracts, and Morningstar-style research. It costs $5 monthly or $50 annually after a 30-day trial.

4

How do you close or move a Robinhood account?

Deactivation sits under Account, Menu and Settings, and needs a $0 balance with no open positions, pending transfers or unpaid dividends first; most requests finish within one to two weeks, and statements and tax documents stay accessible afterwards. Moving holdings to another broker instead costs $100, full or partial, and fractional shares are sold for cash.

5

What are the alternatives?

Fidelity and Charles Schwab also charge no commission on US stocks and offer deeper research tools. Webull is closer in style and offers extended hours too. For prediction markets specifically, there is currently no mainstream broker equivalent.
