About Edits: Video Editor

Edits is free to use: Instagram's video editor exports up to 4K with no watermark, shows no ads and needs no subscription for its timeline, keyframes, Cutout or green screen. The trade is access. You must sign in with an Instagram account, posting is built around Reels and Stories, and Apple's privacy label says your photos, location and contacts may be linked to you, including for third-party advertising.

Edits Review: No Watermark, No Ads, and No Way In Without Instagram

Is Edits Free? 4K Export, No Watermark and One Catch: Instagram

Meta sells no subscription for the editor today. Exports reach 4K with no watermark, neither store flags advertising, and Apple's listing shows no in-app purchases at all. The catch is the front door: Instagram's launch post of April 22, 2025 tells creators to sign in with their Instagram account, and there is no separate sign-up. On September 15, 2026, Meta said an Edits Plus plan would join its Meta One subscriptions, adding cloud storage for syncing projects across devices and more use of the new AI assistant, which already has usage limits. No price has been announced. Google Play already carries an in-app purchases badge with items from $0.99 to $1,049.00, without saying what they buy. Check the current price in the app; it varies by region.

Restyle, Keyframes and Cutout: Where the 10-Second Limit Bites

Restyle is the headline AI tool: pick a preset and it redraws your outfit, location, lighting or style, but Meta's own tutorial caps it at clips of up to 10 seconds, so longer shots need splitting first. Keyframes are more practical: tap the diamond icon, move the playhead, pinch to zoom, and the editor animates position, rotation and scale; the same works on text, overlays and Cutout subjects, which the app can track automatically or let you select by hand. The camera records clips of up to 10 minutes in HD, 2K, 4K or HDR, depending on the phone, with frame-rate control, a countdown timer and a teleprompter whose font size and scroll speed you can change. Since June 2026, finished videos can run 15 minutes instead of 10, the German trade site OnlineMarketing.de reported.

What Meta Collects: Apple's Label Lists Contacts, Photos and Location

The App Store listing points to Meta's Terms and Meta Privacy Policy, not an Edits-specific policy. Apple's privacy label lists data linked to your identity, and its third-party advertising category alone covers coarse location, name, email, phone number, contacts, photos or videos, audio, search history, user and device IDs, and usage data. Google Play's Data safety form is narrower: device IDs may be shared for advertising or marketing, while name, email, user IDs and phone number are shared for fraud prevention and security. Approximate location is collected, and photos, videos and voice recordings are marked optional. Data travels encrypted, and you can request deletion. The AI assistant that began rolling out on September 30, 2026 also reads account metrics such as follows, views, retention, likes and shares.

Android Reviews in 2026: Missing 4K Export and Frozen Playback

Recent Google Play reviews undercut the 4K pitch. In about 600 reviews we read in English, Portuguese, Spanish and Indonesian, six from late July to mid-September 2026 say the 2K or 4K export option never appears, one of them on a CMF Phone 1. Others from August and September describe playback that freezes while audio keeps running, a 'No network connection' error that blocks music and templates, and projects that disappeared; in June, effects sat behind warning icons and one reinstall wiped a reviewer's drafts. We found no developer replies in that sample. A few reviewers add that library music drops out past 90 seconds. The rivals trade differently: CapCut adds a three-second outro clip you can delete, and InShot removes its watermark after an ad or with InShot Pro, from $4.99 a month.

Pros

  • Exports at up to 4K with no watermark and no ads
  • Restyle AI redraws outfit, location or lighting on 10-second clips
  • Keyframes work on clips, text, overlays and Cutout subjects
  • Built-in teleprompter with adjustable font size and scroll speed
  • Camera records clips up to 10 minutes in HD, 2K, 4K or HDR
  • Posts straight to Reels, Stories and Facebook from the share screen

Cons

  • Requires an Instagram account; there is no standalone sign-up
  • Apple's label links photos, contacts and location to you for third-party advertising
  • Android reviewers in 2026 report missing 4K export, frozen playback and lost drafts
  • No desktop or iPad version yet; the App Store listing is iPhone-only

Verdict

We scored Edits 7.2. It matches much of CapCut's free toolset and, unlike InShot, never stamps a watermark or shows ads, while bringing Restyle, a teleprompter and Reels insights into the same app. Take it if you already post Reels and want shooting, editing and publishing in one free app. Skip it if you don't want an Instagram login tied to your edits, if you cut on an Android phone that reviewers say loses the 4K option, or if you need a desktop editor today.

Core function8.04K export, keyframes, Cutout tracking, teleprompter and Restyle in one free app; Restyle stops at 10-second clips.
Ease of use7.5Instagram sign-in and direct posting save steps, but Play reviewers describe jumping playheads and caption edits that misbehave.
Monetisation8.5No ads, watermark or subscription today; Play's unexplained purchase badge and the planned Edits Plus are the caveats.
Performance5.5Android reviews from mid-2026 report missing 4K export, frozen playback and lost drafts; the iPhone download is 346 MB.
Privacy & permissions5.0Mandatory Instagram login, and Apple's label ties photos, contacts and location to you for third-party advertising.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is the Edits app really free?

Yes. Editing, 4K export and sharing cost nothing, exports carry no watermark, and neither store listing flags ads. The real requirement is an Instagram account to sign in. Google Play does show an in-app purchases badge, and Meta has said a paid Edits Plus plan with extra cloud storage and AI assistant usage is coming, but no price has been published yet.

2

How long can a video be in Edits?

Up to 15 minutes for a finished video since June 2026, up from 10, according to the trade site OnlineMarketing.de. The in-app camera records single clips of up to 10 minutes, and the Restyle AI effect only works on clips of 10 seconds or less. Some Play reviewers say library music drops out after 90 seconds.

3

Does Edits have a paid version?

Not yet as a plan you can buy. On September 15, 2026, Meta said Edits Plus will join Meta One, whose individual US plans cost $7.99 and $19.99 a month, but it has not priced Edits Plus. Apple lists no in-app purchases, while Google Play shows items from $0.99 to $1,049.00 without naming them. Check the current price in the app; it varies by region.

4

Can you use Edits without an Instagram account?

No. Instagram's own launch post says to sign in with your Instagram account, and there is no separate sign-up. Finished videos are not locked in: the share screen has a Download option, and exports carry no watermark, so you can post them anywhere. Drafts stay inside the app, and Play reviewers report losing projects, in one case after a reinstall.

5

Is Edits better than CapCut?

On price, yes. Edits never adds a watermark or ads, while CapCut appends a three-second outro you can delete and keeps heavier AI tools for Pro, and InShot watermarks free exports unless you watch an ad or pay $4.99 a month. The catch is ownership and access: CapCut belongs to ByteDance, Edits to Meta, and only Edits demands an Instagram login.
