Best AI Transcription Apps, Ranked
Every transcription app advertises free minutes, and almost none of them means the number the way you would. One caps each recording at three minutes,
Speechify reads PDFs, web pages, emails and photographed book pages aloud with word-by-word highlighting, and adds an AI chat, quizzes and generated podcasts on top. The free plan stops at 1.5x speed with 10 basic voices, while Premium costs $139 a year and unlocks 5x speed, scanning and AI tools. The weak spot is the v6.2.0 rebuild on Android, where reviewers report a broken Kindle link and a free trial that renews as a full year.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-10-06. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
The pricing page spells out the free plan in four lines: listening at up to 1.5x, 10 robotic-sounding voices and text-to-speech features only. Premium raises the ceiling to 5x and, according to the same page, adds 1,000+ voices in 60+ languages, Scan & Listen, AI summaries and chats, Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive imports, voice typing and AI podcasts. On the App Store screenshots the speed panel offers presets from 0.8x to 2.5x, shows about 33 minutes of listening at 1.2x, and has an Increase Speed Automatically switch that raises the pace every 600 words. A few Android reviewers say the v6.2.0 update left them with fewer free voices than the page lists, so try the free tier before paying.
Scanning sits under the plus button as Scan Text. The help center has you photograph a page, or pick one or two pages in landscape, repeat for each further page and tap Save & Listen; every shot lands in a single library file, with skew, crop and column options on the review screen. A printed book therefore becomes a long chain of photos, and reading a whole book by page is a repeated complaint in recent Google Play reviews. Auto skip content, found under the three-dot menu, tries to drop headers and page numbers in AI Enhanced or Classic mode, though one September reviewer says headers were still read on every page. Several reviewers of v6.0.0 to v6.2.0 also say the in-app image cropping was removed.
Premium costs $139 a year on speechify.com and $139.99 through the App Store; the pricing page also shows $29 for a single month, and the App Store lists monthly, quarterly and $289.99 Speechify Pro products. The Android help center describes a free 3-day trial that charges for the year on day 3, so cancel through the store you paid with, such as Google Play, before then; Premium stays active until the billing date. Several reviews describe being surprised by the annual charge. The Kindle route on Android runs through an Accessibility Browser that opens read.amazon.com after you sign in, and reviewers who bought a year mainly for Kindle books say the link stopped working after v6.2.0. Prices are US listings and vary by region.

The 6.9 comes from natural voices, highlighted reading, a Voice Library with celebrity options and AI summaries in one synced library, pulled down by a thin free tier and a rough v6.2.0 rebuild. Choose it for long PDFs, articles and coursework if you will pay $139 a year and do not rely on Kindle linking. Skip it if you want a free reader above 1.5x, need whole books scanned quickly, or may forget the day-3 trial renewal.

The install is free and so is a basic plan, but it stops at 1.5x speed with 10 robotic-sounding voices and text-to-speech only. Scan & Listen, AI chat, AI podcasts and 5x speed are listed as Premium features. The Android help center offers a 3-day free trial that charges for a full year on day 3, so set a reminder before it ends.
On iPhone you tap Create AI Podcast, pick a style (Thoughtful Talk, Late Night Show, Lecture or Storytelling), choose Overview or Deep Dive, then add a topic, link or file. Premium includes 30 podcast credits a month, one per episode. A developer reply on Google Play in early October said podcasts were temporarily disabled on Android.
On speechify.com it is $139 a year or $29 a month. The App Store lists Premium at $139.99 a year, plus $11.99 and $24.99 monthly products and a $49.99 quarterly one. Prices are US listings, change by region and may exclude tax, so check the final amount on the purchase screen before confirming.
Cancel through the channel you paid with: Google Play, the App Store, PayPal, or your account on speechify.com for card payments. Cancelling before a free trial ends prevents any charge, and afterwards you keep Premium until the next billing date. Cancelling stops future charges only; earlier payments are not reversed by that step.
Audible sells professionally narrated audiobooks and podcasts, while Speechify reads your own PDFs, web pages, emails and scans, so the two do different jobs. Voice Dream Reader and NaturalReader are the closer rivals, since they also read your own files aloud. Compare their free tiers and voices against the 1.5x, 10-voice free plan here before paying $139 a year.
