About Zocdoc - Find and book doctors

Zocdoc is free for patients: you search U.S. practices by insurance plan, specialty and open time slot, then book an in-person or video visit without paying a booking fee. Practices pay instead, once per new patient, and some bid for Sponsored Results that appear first in search. The weak spot is accuracy: recent Play reviews describe offices cancelling booked slots or disputing the in-network badge. Check coverage and costs with the practice.

Zocdoc Review: Free to Book, but Practices Pay for the Top Spots

Free to book: discovery fees, Sponsored Results and who pays

A December 2025 post on Zocdoc's Paper Gown blog says the company charges patients nothing: it adds no booking, convenience, platform or no-show fees and bars practices from billing a Zocdoc no-show charge, though an office's own no-show policy still applies. Practices pay a one-time fee per discovery booking, when a new patient finds them through search; patients who look up a clinician by name cost them nothing. Practices can also bid for Sponsored Results, which the provider site calls advertising on Zocdoc: a labeled listing near the top, paid per booking on top of the standard fee. Any price beside a slot is the provider's: an estimated copay or a self-pay rate.

Insurance card photo, the in-network badge and a $25 copay estimate

The insurance check is the main reason to book here. Pick your carrier and plan, or add a member ID or card photo, which the company says improves accuracy, and results narrow to clinicians marked in-network. Before you confirm, a screen shows the plan and expected copay: $25 for a Cigna Open Access Plus member in the app's own store screenshot. Treat that badge as a starting point, not a coverage decision. Of the 199 newest English Play reviews, from late July to September 2026, 56 give one or two stars; about 11 of those dispute insurance matches and 11 describe appointments cancelled or moved by the office. For an expensive visit, confirm coverage with your insurer.

What Data safety lists for advertising, and where HIPAA stops

Google Play's Data safety form says the app may share your address and approximate location with other companies for advertising or marketing, and collects in-app search history and device IDs partly for that purpose. Name and email are collected partly for advertising or marketing too, while precise location is optional and limited to app functionality, analytics and personalization. Health info and photos are optional, and data is encrypted in transit. Apple's privacy label lists health data as linked to you, with nothing declared as used for tracking. Zocdoc's HIPAA business associate agreement applies only to what it handles for providers during booking, not to provider searches, account details, reviews or advertising data.

Guided search, the new AI chat and booking from Gemini

Guided search, added in February 2024, asks what care you need, with choices such as skin problem, skin cancer screening or cosmetic procedures. In September 2026 Play reviews, users objected to a new AI chat in that flow; the developer replied that it cannot be switched off yet but can be skipped for search filters. Booking also works elsewhere: since August 2026 the Gemini app can book Zocdoc appointments, and the Care Access Network announced in September names Amazon Health AI, Yelp and Blue Shield of California as partners. The company says a typical patient is seen 24 to 72 hours after booking.

Pros

  • No booking, platform or no-show fees charged to patients
  • Expected copay shown before you confirm, based on your plan
  • Reviews come only from patients whose visit the practice marked as attended
  • Guided search asks plain-language questions when you don't know the specialty
  • In-person and video visits bookable from the same provider profile
  • Intake forms and insurance details can be completed before the visit

Cons

  • Sponsored Results put paid listings first, and reviewers say they repeat while scrolling
  • Recent reviews report offices cancelling booked slots or disputing the in-network badge
  • Address and approximate location may be shared with other companies for advertising
  • Several recent reviews describe suggested providers 50 to 60 miles away

Verdict

We score Zocdoc 7.3: booking is free, the expected copay appears before you confirm, and guided search helps when you don't know which specialist you need. Take it if you live in a large metro area, carry insurance the app lists and want an appointment within days. Think twice outside major metro areas, where several reviews describe providers 50 or more miles away, or if you'd rather keep symptom searches off an ad-supported platform. Confirm coverage and fees with the practice.

Core function8.0Real-time slots, in-network filtering and a copay estimate before booking, undercut by offices that cancel or dispute coverage.
Ease of use7.5Guided search and pre-visit intake forms help, but the AI chat step cannot be turned off yet.
Monetisation7.5Free for patients with no in-app purchases, but practices buy Sponsored Results placed ahead of organic listings.
Performance6.556 of the 199 newest English Play reviews give one or two stars, often over cancelled slots and insurance mismatches.
Privacy & permissions6.0Address and approximate location may be shared for advertising, and provider searches fall outside Zocdoc's HIPAA business associate terms.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is Zocdoc free for patients?

Yes. Zocdoc charges patients no booking, platform or no-show fees; practices pay when a new patient books them through search. You still pay for the visit itself: a copay, coinsurance or the provider's self-pay price. An office can enforce its own no-show policy, so check its terms before you book.

2

How does Zocdoc know if a doctor takes my insurance?

It compares the plan, member ID or card photo you enter with the plans each practice lists, then shows an in-network badge and an expected copay. That is an estimate, not your insurer's coverage decision; recent Play reviews describe offices calling after booking to say they were out of network.

3

How much does a Zocdoc appointment cost?

Booking costs nothing; the visit costs whatever your insurance and the practice charge. A price beside a slot is your estimated copay or coinsurance, or the provider's self-pay rate, never a Zocdoc fee. Prices vary by plan and region and can change, so confirm the amount with the office.

4

Can I delete my Zocdoc account?

Yes, you can request deletion: the Google Play Data safety form says the developer offers a way to ask for your data to be deleted. One limit first: in an August 2026 Play reply, the developer said the account email currently cannot be edited, so a new address means a new account.

5

Is Zocdoc better than Teladoc or Doctor On Demand?

They solve different problems. Zocdoc books independent practices, in person or by video, while Teladoc Health and Doctor On Demand connect you with their own virtual clinicians; Doctor On Demand lists urgent care from $99 a visit without coverage, a price that can change. If your doctors use Epic, MyChart schedules within that health system.
