About athenaPatient

athenaPatient is athenahealth's free, ad-free phone app for patients whose practice runs the athenahealth Patient Portal: test results, care-team messages, self-scheduling, Self Check-In and athenaTelehealth video visits. It is not a standalone record: you sign in with an existing portal account, U.S. only, and your practice decides which tools appear. Bills, cancellations and visit summaries still open the web portal, and 2026 Play reviews keep reporting login loops.

athenaPatient Review: A Handy Inbox That Still Leans on the Web Portal

Bills, cancellations and visit summaries: what still needs the Patient Portal

Free and ad-free, the app mirrors only part of an athenahealth Patient Portal account you already have, and only for U.S. patients of practices on athenahealth's network. Per athenahealth's help pages, cancelling an appointment means the web portal or a phone call, and post-visit summaries are not in the app at all. The Billing tab loads your provider's billing dashboard in a browser. Book Visit, Self Check-In and athenaTelehealth appear only if your practice has switched them on; otherwise scheduling ends in a "Scheduling Unsupported" notice. View Your Patient Portals, under the settings cog, opens the full web site already signed in. athenahealth has announced plain-language self-scheduling and an Intelligent Patient Assistant for the second half of 2026.

Inbox, Results and only three types of push alert

Messaging is the strongest part: you start a message from the chat bubble in the Inbox or reply inside a thread, and the two most-upvoted English Play reviews we read, with 192 and 150 helpful votes, praise exactly that. Results lists lab, imaging and other tests once your practice publishes them. Push alerts cover three events, per athenahealth's help: lab results, appointment reminders and the pre-visit check-in, and reviews from December 2025 and January 2026 describe message alerts reaching email but not the phone. The spring 2026 release added renewal and medication resources, yet a June 2026 reviewer still had to send a separate message for each prescription. Records of family members you can access are mixed into every tab, not shown as separate profiles.

What the Data safety form, Apple's label and the January 2026 privacy notice say

Google Play's Data safety form declares no data shared with third parties and encryption in transit. Collected data includes health info, in-app messages, email address, user IDs, approximate location and app interactions, plus optional photos and files, and the form offers no way to request deletion. Apple's label links health data, messages and usage to your identity but lists nothing used to track you. athenahealth's privacy notice for patient apps, dated January 27, 2026, says it acts as a HIPAA business associate of your provider, routes deletion or correction requests to that provider, and may sell de-identified data. In 2024 a configuration error left insurance eligibility files publicly reachable and athenahealth notified 1,974 people; the HIPAA Journal report ties it to those files, not the app. Your practice's notice of privacy practices sets the rules that apply to you.

33 of 199 recent Play reviews: the login loop

Signing in is the recurring failure: of the 199 newest English reviews on Google Play, posted August 6 to September 30, 2026, 33 give one or two stars, and 16 of those describe failed sign-ins, often a loop back to the login screen after entering a password or confirming linked practices. The developer's stock replies suggest reinstalling or sending details through Leave Us App Feedback under the settings cog. Several reviewers say sign-in opens an external browser page, and athenahealth's help confirms a login is required every time, with Face ID or a fingerprint as the shortcut. Spanish-language reviews read differently: 144 of the latest 150 give five stars.

Verdict

We score athenaPatient 7.5: free, ad-free access to results, care-team messages, Self Check-In and athenaTelehealth visits, minus points for sending bills, cancellations and visit summaries back to the web portal and for a steady run of 2026 login complaints. Take it if your practice runs athenahealth and you message your care team often. Keep the browser portal as your main tool if you manage family accounts or want billing in one place. Check your practice's terms for payments and proxy access.

Core function7.5Results, messaging, self-scheduling, check-in and video visits work, but billing, cancellations and visit summaries need the web portal.
Ease of use7.0Biometric login and a simple tab bar help; family records mix into every tab and each prescription needs its own message.
Monetisation9.5athenahealth charges patients nothing and shows no ads; bills come from your practice and are paid in a browser.
Performance6.033 of the 199 newest English Play reviews give one or two stars, most often over login loops.
Privacy & permissions7.0No sharing declared and no tracking on Apple's label, but deletion goes through your provider and de-identified data can be sold.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is the athenaPatient app free?

Yes. athenahealth charges patients nothing for the app, and both stores list no ads or in-app purchases. You do need an existing athenahealth Patient Portal account from a U.S. practice on its network. Care itself is billed by your practice, so check its payment terms directly.

2

Can I see my child's records in athenaPatient?

Yes, if you already have proxy access and your child's provider supports the app. Family records then appear mixed into each tab rather than in a separate profile. Access is set up in the web portal, with Full Access or Billing Access levels, and your practice's proxy policy decides who qualifies.

3

Can I pay my medical bill in the athenaPatient app?

Partly. The Billing tab lists your billing accounts, but payment happens on your provider's secure billing dashboard, which opens in a web browser. Amounts, payment plans and any fees are set by your practice, so confirm them with its billing office; they vary and can change.

4

Can I delete my athenaPatient data?

Not from the app. Google Play's Data safety form says the developer offers no way to request deletion, and athenahealth's privacy notice sends deletion or correction requests to your healthcare provider, whose records it manages. Uninstalling removes the app from your phone, while your chart stays with the practice.

5

Is athenaPatient the same as MyChart or FollowMyHealth?

No. Each app reads one vendor's records: MyChart works where your provider runs Epic and can merge several Epic organizations through Happy Together, while FollowMyHealth from Veradigm opens its Universal Health Record. If your practice uses athenahealth, its own app or web portal is the one that shows your chart.
