About Dungeon Within

Dungeon Within is GameCoaster's early-access successor to Dungeon Maker — you are an amnesiac Dark Lord building a dungeon of rooms, traps and facilities, recruiting monsters with racial synergies, and watching squads of heroes break on it run after run — $5.99 on iOS and Android since April 2026, with expansion passes and packs from $1.99 to $29.99 on top, no ads. It rates 4.9 on the App Store and 4.7 on Google Play, largely from fans of the studio's ten years of dungeon games. The complaints are complexity without a tutorial, drawn-out battles, and a September patch that made high-tier units harder to farm.

Dungeon Within Review: GameCoaster's Dungeon Maker Heir, Deep and Unfinished

Build the Kill Zone, Wake the Monsters, Let the Heroes Come

The formula is the studio's own from Dungeon Maker, remade: you are the Dark Lord, and the dungeon is a grid of combat rooms, sinister facilities and traps you arrange into a kill zone for waves of invading heroes; monsters awakened across the world fill the rooms, each with abilities and racial synergies, and when the invaders reach the core the Dark Lord's authority turns the fight. Runs are roguelike: relics hidden in the dungeon, bizarre events, choices that empower the next battle, and permanent progress through fragments of memory in an Ark of Memory that carries between runs. The reviews are a fan base in good standing: the most-voted Play review, a May 6 five-star with 43 votes, has paid GameCoaster three times in ten years and is content to pay for early access; a September 8 App Store five-star calls it a soft sequel to Dungeon Maker with monster girls returned; a July 10 five-star bought the expansion pass and praises developers who talk to their players.

Too Complex for Some, Too Long for Others, and a Patch That Broke the Farm

The objections come from inside the fan base and from outside it. Outside: a June 29 App Store two-star bought it for the ratings and found most of the price paid for the complexity of the systems rather than enjoyable play; a June 16 three-star was put off by the lack of a tutorial and the wall of information before finding it intuitive after a run or two. Inside: an August 25 four-star loves GameCoaster and finds the loop repetitive enough to fall asleep by the third and fourth boss fight; a September 2 Play five-star says the same — battle after battle once a build is going — and objects that enemies can run past an entire unit of eight monsters untouched. The sharpest is a September 18 one-star with the latest patch: high-tier units take heavy grinding, and after the update there is no reliable way to farm their parts without risking the destruction of a unit that took hours to obtain. It is still early access, which the May reviews accept and the June ones did not expect at $5.99.

$5.99 to Enter, Then Passes, Skins and Essences to $29.99 — No Ads

The price is $5.99 on both stores, and then the shop: an Underworld Expansion Pass at $5.99 and Underworld Pass 1 at $2.99, skins and packs from $1.99 to $17.99, and Essence of Transcendence and Ark of Eternity at $29.99 each, with Google Play's range at $2.09 to $28.99. There are no ads. Dungeon Maker sold DLC the same way over a decade. Google's data card lists financial info, app info and device IDs collected; Apple lists no tracking. The iOS build is 249 MB on iOS 15 or later, with iPad and Apple Silicon Macs; Android needs 7.1; five languages; rated Everyone 10+ and 13+. Five months in it shows 50,000-plus installs and 5,330 reviews at 4.7 on Play, 446 App Store ratings at 4.9. Prices are regional.

Pros

  • Dungeon Maker's build-and-defend formula back, with a Dark Lord's abilities
  • Roguelike runs with relics, events and permanent memory progress
  • Developers who communicate and update monthly — a decade of trust behind it
  • $5.99 with no ads, 249 MB, on iOS 15, Android 7.1 and M1 Macs
  • Deep, D&D-flavoured systems that reward building knowledge

Cons

  • No tutorial and a wall of information — too complex for one buyer to enjoy
  • Battles drag once a build works; a fan dozes by the fourth boss
  • A September patch removed reliable farming of high-tier unit parts
  • Early access at a paid price, with passes and $29.99 essences on top

Verdict

A 7.2: a deep, characterful dungeon-defence roguelike from a studio its players have trusted for a decade, sold in early access at $5.99 with an optional shop that reaches $29.99, and honest about neither its complexity nor its length up front. Take it if you loved Dungeon Maker and want its heir with monster girls back. Skip it if you want a tutorial, short runs, or a finished game — 0.6.3 is not one yet.

Gameplay8Dungeon design, monster synergy and roguelike choice — the studio's best loop, still being tuned.
Controls7Drag rooms, tap abilities; a UX a three-star says leaves a lot to be desired.
Replay value8Every run differs and memory carries over; the grind for top units is the new sticking point.
Graphics & sound7Dark, painterly dungeons and a monster-girl roster fans asked to return.
Monetisation6Fair entry price and no ads, but a shop that climbs to $29.99 twice on an unfinished game.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play Dungeon Within offline?

Yes — it is a single-player roguelike with no ads and no online modes, and GameCoaster's earlier dungeon games all ran offline; the 249 MB download holds everything. Purchases and any cloud save need a connection; Google's card lists financial and device data collected for those.

2

Is Dungeon Within free?

No. It is $5.99 on both stores, paid once, with no ads — and a shop of optional content: expansion passes at $2.99 and $5.99, skins and packs from $1.99 to $17.99, and two $29.99 items. A May 2026 fan counts three GameCoaster purchases in ten years as fair; a June buyer expected a polished game for the entry price. Prices vary by region.

3

What phone do you need for Dungeon Within?

iOS 15 or newer with 249 MB free — iPhone, iPad or Apple Silicon Mac — or Android 7.1 or newer. It is a 2D strategy game and no reviewer reports performance problems; the demands are on your attention, not the hardware. A June 2026 reviewer plays it as a commuter game.

4

Can you play Dungeon Within with friends?

No. It is single-player — your dungeon against AI heroes — with no multiplayer, co-op or leaderboards on either store. The community lives in the developers' channels, where the July 2026 reviewer says they answer players.

5

How long is a Dungeon Within run?

An hour or more — long enough that an August 2026 fan admits dozing through later boss fights and a September reviewer calls it drawn out once a build is set. Across runs, the memory system and the grind for high-tier units stretch into dozens of hours, and early access keeps adding systems: parts storage and variant research in September.
