Oceanhorn 3 Review: Zelda-Shaped Islands on Apple Arcade, Bugs on the Mountain

A Thousand Years After Oceanhorn 2, With a Technopirate and Her Crew

The series has always been Finland's answer to Zelda, and the third game says so in its structure: a chain of islands you sail to from Red Town, each with quests, chests and bloodstones to find, rather than the linear dungeons of the first game or a single open world. The story picks up a millennium after Oceanhorn 2 — the last floating island of the Sky Realm has fallen into the Shadow Sea, and you travel with Em, a technopirate, and her ship Warlock's Revenge, meeting Blackhat from the Uncharted Seas and hunting a Lost God beneath the waves. A May 4, 2026 App Store reviewer places it between Wind Waker and Breath of the Wild; a March 26 fan since the first game praises the movement and exploration and asks for quality-of-life changes; a March 18 four-star cannot sort skills and sticks to the six shortcut slots. Cornfox & Brothers released it on March 5, 2026, in 15 languages, rated 9+.

Runs Well on an iPhone 16; Stuck on Komona Island, Save Files Gone

Performance is the good news. A March 22 five-star on an iPhone 16 runs it on the Quality preset at 30 fps, hardly notices the frame rate after a few minutes, and used about a quarter of the battery in two and a half hours without heat. The bad news is stability across the year: a March 15 review crashes when switching apps and gets stuck on the Komona Island Mountaintop; a March 14 review's quests simply end at 90 per cent on the same mountain; a March 28 iPad owner finds the graphics too heavy even on basic settings. The summer expansion did not end it — an August 31 two-star cannot pass the Goblin Graveyard gate in the Lightbringer content even after a patch, and with a gamepad the teleport pod only moves up and down; a September 5 one-star found every save reset to New Game. The August 27 Lightbringer Update, version 2.1, added the Harbinger, a titan-scale boss, two dungeons and the enemy Blackmore.

Apple Arcade Only: No Price, No Ads, No Android

There is nothing to buy and nothing to skip: Oceanhorn 3 is an Apple Arcade title, included with the subscription and unavailable outside it, with no in-app purchases, no advertising and no tracking listed — a March 10 reviewer calls it the kind of game the service needs. The flip side is the walls: no Android version, no Steam version, no way to own it, and a 4 GB download that needs iOS 15 or newer, with iPad, Mac and Apple Vision builds under the same subscription and controller support built in. The two-part summer quest Hand of the Savior — the Sea Titan Beross in Part 1, the Sorcerer's Gate and Devil's Cradle in Part 2 — came free, the Arcade model working as intended. The App Store rating stands at 4.7 from 1,877; a September 16 reviewer recommends playing the first two games first for the plot. Subscription prices are regional.

Pros

  • Island-hopping structure with quests, chests and bloodstones — Zelda's shape, its own identity
  • A steady 30 fps on an iPhone 16 with modest battery use, per a March review
  • Free two-part story expansion with a titan-scale boss added in summer 2026
  • No ads, no in-app purchases, controller support, and Mac and Vision builds included
  • 4.7 from 1,877 App Store ratings

Cons

  • Progress-blocking bugs — Komona Island Mountaintop, the Goblin Graveyard gate — across March to August
  • A September 2026 reviewer found every save file reset
  • Apple Arcade only: no Android, no purchase, no game without the subscription
  • Skills cannot be sorted and an older iPad struggles, per March reviews

Verdict

A 7.4: a real Zelda-shaped adventure on a phone, with sailing, islands and a free expansion — and a year of reviews describing quests that stop, gates that will not open and saves that vanished. Take it if you already pay for Apple Arcade and want a long single-player RPG on iPhone, iPad or Mac. Skip it if you are on Android, want to own the game outright, or would rather wait for a patch before investing thirty hours.

Gameplay8Sailing, islands, dungeons and a self-contained story; quests that end early for some players.
Controls7Touch and gamepad both supported; six shortcut slots and a teleport-pod bug on pads.
Replay value7Island completion grids and a free summer expansion in two parts, if the saves survive.
Graphics & sound8Praised as breathtaking on an iPhone 16; too heavy for an older iPad, with music that pauses.
Monetisation7Nothing to buy inside — and nothing to buy outside the Apple Arcade subscription.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play Oceanhorn 3 offline?

Yes, as Apple Arcade games generally can once downloaded — it is single-player with no ads, no purchases and no online mode. The subscription is verified by the device, so keep it active, and note the 4 GB download. A September 2026 reviewer lost saves, so let iCloud sync finish before switching devices.

2

Is Oceanhorn 3 free?

Not free and not for sale: it is included with Apple Arcade and available only there, on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Vision. There are no in-app purchases or ads, and the summer 2026 Hand of the Savior expansion came at no extra cost. Apple Arcade subscription prices vary by region.

3

What device do you need for Oceanhorn 3?

An iPhone or iPad on iOS 15 or newer with 4 GB free, a Mac on macOS 12, or Apple Vision — all through the same Apple Arcade subscription. A March 2026 reviewer runs it well on an iPhone 16 at 30 fps; another on an older iPad finds it too heavy even on basic settings. There is no Android version.

4

Can you play Oceanhorn 3 with friends?

No. It is a single-player adventure with no co-op, multiplayer or leaderboards. Em, her crew and Blackhat are companions in the story, not other players. Apple Arcade's family sharing lets a household play under one subscription, each with their own saves.

5

How long is Oceanhorn 3?

A full action RPG: a March 2026 reviewer was 90 per cent complete after a long run of islands, and the two-part Hand of the Savior expansion added the Sea Titan Beross, the Harbinger and two dungeons in summer 2026. An August reviewer finds the post-story Astroblade search stretched. Expect a few dozen hours, more if you chase every island's completion grid.
