About Roblox

Roblox is not a game but a launcher for millions of user-built 3D experiences, from Adopt Me! to 99 Nights in the Forest. One account and one currency, Robux, follow you across phone, PC, console and VR, and anything you buy stays with the avatar rather than the title. The catch arrived in January 2026: text and voice chat now stay locked until a face scan estimates your age.

Roblox Review: Chat Now Costs a Face Scan

Facial Age Estimation Gates Every Chat

Since January 2026 the platform has required an age check before text or voice chat works anywhere in the app. The check is a video selfie handled by the vendor Persona, which sorts players into six bands from under-9 to 21-and-over; you talk to your own band and below, so a 13-year-old cannot be messaged by an adult account. Roblox says the images are deleted once they have been processed, and players 13 and up can submit a government ID instead. UK certification testing put the estimator's mean error at 1.4 years for minors. In practice, a child who skips the check keeps playing but loses chat, and a linked parent can correct a wrong birthday once.

Roblox Plus Costs $4.99, Robux Cost More

The subscription that launched on 30 April 2026 is $4.99 a month and includes no currency at all. It gives 10% off items and avatars, rising to 20% from the third consecutive month, unlimited private servers, fee-free Robux transfers and a profile badge. Bundles fold currency in: 500 Robux a month at $8.99, 1,000 at $12.99, 2,000 at $21.99. Premium, the older plan, closed to new subscribers the same day, and its 10% bonus on currency purchases ended on 30 May 2026. Those are US listings and they vary by region. What no plan changes is that most popular experiences still sell shortcuts and cosmetics for Robux on top.

Creators Need 30,000 Robux to Cash Out

Building is the other half of the platform, and its numbers are public. Payouts start at 30,000 earned Robux, converted at $0.0038 each — about $114. A higher rate of $0.0054 applies to spending by verified adults in the United States, introduced on 8 June 2026, so the same 30,000 returns $162 when it comes from that pool. The catch for phone owners: you cannot build here. Studio, the editor behind every experience in the app, runs only on Windows and macOS, and the mobile client is play-only. A teenager who wants to publish needs a desktop machine, not the phone in their hand.

Pros

  • One login carries your avatar across phone, PC, console and VR
  • Age bands now block adults from messaging accounts under sixteen
  • Parental controls report screen time and cap spending separately
  • No ad banners: the Play listing shows no Contains ads badge
  • Millions of experiences, with new titles charting every single week

Cons

  • Chat stays off until a face scan or ID check passes
  • Most popular experiences sell shortcuts and cosmetics for Robux anyway
  • Building games needs Studio on Windows or macOS; phones only play
  • Play reviewers report heat and battery drain during long sessions

Verdict

Nothing else on a phone offers this much for free, and nothing else asks a child to scan their face before they can say hello. Install it if the appeal is variety — a different game every evening, one account, friends on any device. Skip it if you want a finished game rather than a shop: the experiences worth playing here run on Robux, and making your own needs Studio on a Windows or Mac computer.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play Roblox offline?

No. The listing states that a network connection is required, and every experience — even a single-player one — runs on servers rather than on the handset. Downloading the 232 MB client gets you the launcher, not any of the games, so without Wi-Fi or mobile data the app opens to an error screen.

2

Is Roblox free, or do you have to pay?

Installing and playing cost nothing. Money enters through Robux, the currency that buys cosmetics and shortcuts inside individual experiences, and through the $4.99 monthly subscription, which adds a 10% item discount, rising to 20% in the third month, plus free private servers. Bundles carrying 500, 1,000 or 2,000 Robux run $8.99 to $21.99. Prices are US listings and change by region.

3

What phone do you need to run Roblox?

The iPhone build needs iOS 14.0 or newer and 232 MB of free space; on Android the app has passed a billion installs. Older handsets do run it, but reviewers on Google Play regularly report heat and battery drain during long sessions, and crowded experiences drop frames on budget hardware.

4

Can you play with friends on other devices?

Yes. A session started on a phone can include friends on PC, console, tablet or VR, and the Party tab in the bottom bar keeps a group together between experiences. Private servers for a closed group come free with the subscription. Talking to those friends still depends on the age check, and accounts under sixteen communicate only with trusted friends.

5

How do you limit time spent in the app?

Parental controls show a seven-day screen-time average — the sample screen in the store listing reads 1 hour 48 minutes — and let a linked parent set limits alongside content, communication and spending restrictions. Inside the app there is no natural stopping point: leaving one experience drops you straight back into a feed of recommendations.
