TikTok vs Instagram Reels: Which App to Keep on Your Phone
TikTok if the feed is the point; Instagram if the people are. On our scores it is 7.5 to 7.1, and the gap is weight and messaging: Instagram's iPhone

Subway Surfers City is Sybo's sequel to the most-downloaded runner on the stores — Jake, Tricky, Fresh and Yutani in a redrawn Subway City with districts to unlock, a City Tour mode beside the endless run, stomps and jumps that reach Secret Stars, and surfers and boards with abilities — free on iOS and Android since February 26, 2026, past ten million Android installs. Reviewers call it the original dialled in; they also count forced ads after runs and a season pass at about $9 a month.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-09-21. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
The loop is unchanged — run from the Guard and his dog along the tracks, dodge trains, collect coins — and everything around it is new: a stomp and a higher jump that open vertical routes to Secret Stars, a City Tour mode with missions alongside the endless run, districts of Subway City unlocked with XP, new power-ups, and surfers and boards that each carry an ability, upgraded with tokens into a Crew with stacking perks. The April 14, 2026 App Store five-star's phrase is premium Subway Surfers, everything you love dialled in, with expressive redrawn characters; a February 27 Play review with 123 votes calls it as good as the original, missing only the old music. Seasons bring a character each — Prince K in September 2026 — and version 2.5.1 made upgrade tokens generic. Rated 9+ and Everyone 10+, in 14 languages.
The complaints arrive in the same reviews as the praise. The February 26 Play three-star with 68 votes enjoyed twenty minutes of a beautifully updated Subway Surfers, accepted the optional ad rewards and the pass-locked character, and then hit a forced ad after a run, then another — why, in a Subway Surfers game; an April 10 four-star with 61 votes says an ad usually appears every time you return to the menu after a run. The pass is the second thread: a February 26 App Store four-star would love to collect every surfer but cannot with a season mechanic that charges almost $10 a month for a character and a skin, and the 123-vote review calls season passes fed on fear of missing out not very moral. An August 5 four-star returning from the original still finds City a great improvement. Ratings: 4.8 from 22,102 on the App Store, 4.6 from 330,000 on Play with ten million installs.
Both stores carry advertising; Google Play prices items from $0.99 to $99.99, and the App Store's top ten are a City Pass Unlock at $8.99, Key Packs at $4.99 and $9.99, Starter Packs at $1.99 and $4.99, a Coin Pack at $1.99, and the tell-tale consumables — Out of Revives at $4.99 and Out of Trial Tickets at $1.99 — that sell a second chance at the moment you lose. No loot-box flag appears on either store. Apple's tracking list is Location, Identifiers and Usage Data not linked to you; Google's data-safety card lists Location, Personal info and three other types collected, with four types shared. The install is 410 MB on iPhone, iOS 16 or newer with Apple Silicon Macs, Android 8.0 or newer. Prices are regional and seasons rotate.

A 7.1: the runner everyone has played, redrawn and genuinely improved, with the modern free-to-play kit bolted on — forced ads, a monthly pass, revives at death. Take it if you loved Subway Surfers and want more of it with a stomp button and seasons. Skip it if the original's ads drove you off — City has them too, plus a pass.
The store pages do not say. The original runs offline; City's seasons, missions, City Tour progress and the ads reviewers describe are online features, and Google's card lists data shared in play. Expect the endless run to work without a signal and the rest to wait for one.
There is no one to beat but the leaderboard, so money buys characters and continues: a City Pass at $8.99 with a season character, key and coin packs, and Out-of-Revives and Out-of-Tickets purchases at $4.99 and $1.99 sold when you lose, with items to $99.99 on Google Play and no loot boxes. A February 2026 reviewer objects to the pass on principle. Prices vary by region.
iOS 16 or newer with 410 MB free, or Android 8.0 or newer; Apple Silicon Macs run it too. It is a light runner and no visible review complains about performance — the complaints are about ads and passes.
Only through leaderboards and missions — the run is single-player, and the store pages describe no co-op or head-to-head mode. Crews are the surfers and boards you combine, not other players.
A run lasts until the Guard catches you — a minute or ten, with revives for sale — and City Tour missions are short. The long clock is the season, roughly two weeks each with a pass character, and the districts unlocked by XP; the ads between runs, per reviews, add their own minutes.

TikTok if what you want is a feed that fills ten minutes without asking you anything; YouTube if you also want the long video, the music and the live
