Best Car Apps for Buying and Fixing a Car, Ranked
Car Scanner ELM OBD2 is the best car app: with a small adapter in the diagnostic port it reads and clears fault codes, shows live sensor data and cost
Car Scanner ELM OBD2, from Car Scanner LLC, turns a phone into an OBD-II scan tool through a separate ELM327 adapter plugged into the car's 16-pin diagnostic port. It reads and clears fault codes, shows freeze frame and Mode 06 test results, and adds coding for Volkswagen-group MQB, PQ26 and MLB-EVO cars. The catch is hardware: iPhones work only with Bluetooth LE, Wi-Fi or MFi adapters, and a bad clone adapter limits everything else.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-10-01. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
The download is free and runs Google AdMob ads; full access needs a Car Scanner Pro purchase. The US App Store lists $3.99 for six months, $4.99 for a year and $7.99 for a Forever tier, plus Low and Mid price tiers at $6.99. The developer's FAQ says the tiers unlock the same features, so the difference is simply what you choose to pay. Check the current price in the app; it varies by region. Google Play Pass subscribers get the Android build without ads or purchases. Recent Google Play reviews describe Pro prompts after the first scan, and several buyers say Pro added nothing for ABS, airbag or transmission data. Pro cannot change that: the sensor list is requested from the car's ECU on every connection, so the app shows only what your model reports.
Pick any Audi, Volkswagen, Skoda or Seat connection profile, connect, and a Coding and Service menu appears with a platform picker for MQB, PQ26 and MLB-EVO cars, plus the Touareg NF and Tiguan I facelifts. Outside that group the list is shorter: Toyota and Lexus with CAN bus, some Renault and Dacia models, a CVT oil degradation reset for the Mitsubishi Outlander and a service reminder reset for CAN-bus GM cars. Many 2021-and-later cars accept a new value only with the hood open and the handbrake set, and an active Bluetooth link to the car radio can cut adapter speed fivefold. Almost every change and its original value land in a coding history, and a Backup command saves all blocks first. Carista, by comparison, puts its coding behind a Pro subscription of $59.99 a year.
The developer's adapter guide says iPhones cannot use classic Bluetooth ELM327 adapters in any app, only Bluetooth LE, Wi-Fi or MFi models such as the OBDLink MX+, priced around $100. It also warns against adapters under $10, names containing 'mini' and Bluetooth addresses starting 11:22:33, since bad clones drop data packets and can make an engine run rough; the recommended models carry Amazon affiliate links. Google Play's data safety form lists approximate location and device IDs shared for advertising and analytics, and Apple's label says identifiers may be used to track you across apps. Personalized ads can be switched off under Settings, Information. A Pro license also stays in its store: Google Play, App Store and Huawei AppGallery purchases do not transfer, and a lost store account takes the purchase with it.

Car Scanner earns its 7.7 for depth that rivals charge more for: Mode 06, freeze frame, custom PIDs and Volkswagen-group coding, with no US App Store purchase above $7.99. Take it if you own a quality ELM327 adapter, such as an OBDLink or vLinker model, and want to read your own fault codes or adjust an MQB car. Skip it if you expect ABS and airbag access on any car, need one license across iPhone and Android, or object to ad SDKs that share approximate location.

Yes, the download is free and connects to your car, but it shows Google AdMob ads, and Google Play reviewers report some readings marked Pro-only. Full access needs Car Scanner Pro, listed on the US App Store from $3.99 for six months to $7.99 for the Forever tier. Google Play Pass subscribers get the Android version without ads or purchases. Check the current price in the app; it varies by region.
Only on some cars. Generic OBD-II mode covers engine and emissions systems, while ABS, airbag and transmission data need a brand-specific connection profile, and the developer notes that ELM327 adapters usually cannot reach manufacturer diagnostic mode. Pick your exact model in the connection profile list, or the brand plus OBD-II profile if it is missing, and test on the free tier before buying Pro.
It is sold both ways. The US App Store lists $3.99 for six months, $4.99 for a year and $7.99 for a Forever tier, with Low and Mid tiers at $6.99 that unlock the same features. A purchase covers every device on one store account but never crosses from Google Play to the App Store or AppGallery. Check the current price in the app; it varies by region.
Yes for diagnostics: the app reaches the car over the adapter's own Bluetooth or Wi-Fi link, not the internet. Buying or restoring Pro needs a connection, and so do the free tier's ads. Recordings export as CSV files. If a time-limited Pro subscription is not renewed, the developer says the app falls back to free mode.
It is cheaper to start. Torque Pro costs $4.95 upfront on Google Play, and OBD Fusion costs $9.99 on the App Store, with Enhanced Diagnostics packs at $14.99 each for makes such as Toyota and Ford. Car Scanner is free to try on both platforms. Torque Pro's listing does offer emailed CSV and KML logs, while Car Scanner exports recordings one file at a time.
