Best Car Apps for Buying and Fixing a Car, Ranked
Car Scanner ELM OBD2 is the best car app: with a small adapter in the diagnostic port it reads and clears fault codes, shows live sensor data and cost
Autotrader is Cox Automotive's car marketplace app: free for buyers but ad-supported, with a Play listing that claims over 6 million vehicles from more than 20,000 sellers. What sets it apart is Kelley Blue Book data built into the listings, from Price Advisor ranges to the My Wallet payment estimator. The main limitation sits on the selling side, where 2026 Play reviews describe bots and scammers flooding private-seller inboxes.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-10-01. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
Buyers pay nothing to search, save cars or set price-drop alerts; the cost is ads, though featured ads can be hidden in results since September 2025. Most listings carry the Kelley Blue Book Price Advisor, a bar whose green zone marks KBB's Fair Market Range, plus a Great Price or Good Price badge based on where the asking price falls. My Wallet turns a credit tier, loan term, down payment and trade-in into estimated monthly payments, and since March 2026 it syncs to KBB.com and hundreds of dealer websites. History reports appear only when available, whereas the CARFAX app attaches a free report to every used listing.
Search takes plain phrases: since September 2025 you can type something like hybrids under 20k miles instead of stepping through make and model menus. May 2026 added an Ask AI button to the bottom menu, a chat assistant that compares cars, and an August update linked its answers to live results. DealerAssist, added in July, is location-aware, surfacing one dealer's stock and visit prep for a trip to the lot. Price labels tightened too: an All-In Pricing tag folds in dealer-added fees, and since September 1 See Price Details itemizes discounts, fees and taxes. Cox's pitch to dealers says assistant users are six times more likely to send a lead.
Private sellers pay twice. The ad costs $9, $29 or $49 depending on the asking price and runs 180 days on Autotrader and KBB.com; a sale through Private Seller Exchange adds a 0.99% seller protection fee, with a $99 minimum. That buys Stripe ID checks on both parties, contact details kept off the ad, escrow that pays out only after the buyer confirms possession, and title paperwork. Salvage titles, leased cars and pre-1989 models are excluded. The weak point is the inbox: Play reviews from July to September 2026 repeatedly describe bots pushing chats off-platform and messages that fail to load in the app. Fees are US prices and may change.
Apple's privacy label lists location, contact info, search history, identifiers and usage data as possibly used to track you across other companies' apps, and the iOS listing warns of location use while the app is closed. Google Play's Data safety form says precise location, in-app search history and phone number may be shared with other companies, advertising included. Cox Automotive's privacy notice, updated August 13, 2026, says it sold or shared identifiers, geolocation data and inferences in the previous 12 months, and calls Cox a data broker under Texas law. Deletion runs through a privacy request form or 1-866-288-6872.

Autotrader earns 6.8 because the buyer side works: a large dealer inventory, Kelley Blue Book pricing context on most listings, My Wallet payment estimates and, in 2026, an AI assistant and itemized price details. Crash complaints and location data shared for advertising pull the score down. Take it if you are shopping dealer stock and want KBB context on each price. Skip it if you plan to sell privately and need a clean inbox, or if you object to ad-driven location sharing.

Yes for buyers: searching, saving cars, price-drop alerts and contacting dealers cost nothing, and ads pay for it; some 2026 reviewers describe full-page ones. Fees start with Private Seller Exchange, where sellers pay per ad plus 0.99% at sale and buyers pay a state documentation fee of $80 to $400, at US rates that may change.
Great Price and Good Price are badges based on where a listing's asking price falls within Kelley Blue Book's Fair Market Range, the span KBB considers fair to buyer and seller. They sit beside the KBB Price Advisor bar, where green marks that range, white prices below it and red prices above it. Not every listing shows the advisor.
The ad costs $9, $29 or $49 depending on the asking price and runs for 180 days. A sale through Private Seller Exchange adds a 0.99% seller protection fee, minimum $99, which covers buyer ID checks, escrow and title paperwork; a lost title costs another $99. These are US prices and may change.
Submit the privacy request form linked from the Cox Automotive privacy notice or call 1-866-288-6872; you may need to verify your identity. Google Play's Data safety form confirms deletion can be requested. Private-seller ads can be cancelled at any time, but 2026 Play reviewers describe one listing-fee refund being refused and another offered at 40%.
CARFAX and CarMax are the closest named options. The CARFAX app includes a free CARFAX history report with every used listing, while this app shows reports only when available. CarMax is a used-car retailer selling its own stock, and since May 2024 its money-back guarantee lasts 10 days, down from 30.
