About Cars.com - New & Used Cars

The Cars.com app is free for shoppers and private sellers, because dealerships pay for the marketplace. Its edge is price context: Great Deal, Good Deal and Fair Price badges built from comparable listings, a Hot Car flag for cars likely to sell within a week, and Lot Assistant, added on iPhone in September 2026, which pulls pricing and history from a photo taken at a dealership. The trade-off is data: dealer contact forms pass your details on.

Cars.com Review: Sharp Price Badges, but Every Lead Goes to a Dealer

What's Free: Search, Price-Drop Alerts and a No-Fee Private Listing

Shoppers pay nothing: Google Play lists no in-app purchases, and the money comes from the 19,343 dealerships Cars.com counted as customers at the end of June 2026, plus advertising. That shows up in results, where sponsored listings sit among the cars you filtered for; a February 2026 update fixed a bug that made them look out of sort order. Saved searches and favorites trigger price-drop and new-listing alerts. Private sellers also list for free, with no paid placement on offer. The car must be a 1992 model or newer, listed by the titled owner, and not an RV, motorcycle or commercial vehicle. Listings go live in about 24 hours on average, and buyer messages arrive through a Contact Seller form that forwards to your email.

Great Deal, Good Deal, Fair Price and the 70% Hot Car Rule

Listings can carry one of three price badges. A machine-learning model finds the closest comparable vehicles, weighs equipment and regional demand beyond year, make, model and trim, then labels the asking price a Great Deal (well below market), Good Deal (at or slightly below) or Fair Price (slightly above). A separate Hot Car badge appears when the model gives a used car a 70% chance of selling within seven days, or a new one within 20 days, based on more than 50 factors. The badges rate price, not condition, and they rely on dealer-entered data: a March 2026 Play review describes automatics listed as manuals. Autotrader covers the same ground with Kelley Blue Book's Price Advisor on every listing, while the CARFAX app attaches a free history report to every used car.

Check Availability, Prequalify, Instant Offer: What Each One Shares

The privacy policy says details typed into a dealer contact form go to that dealership, and recent Play reviews complain about the calls and emails that follow. Apple's privacy label lists location, contact info, search history, identifiers and usage data as used to track you across other companies' apps. Loan prequalification is a soft inquiry that leaves your score alone, but the form asks for your Social Security number, date of birth and income. Results expire after 30 days, and the dealer picks which lenders see the application, so confirm rates and terms with the lender itself. Instant Offer bids come from dealers through AccuTrade, an appraisal business Cars.com bought in 2022; its own dealer pitch says cars sourced this way net about $2,700 more profit than auction stock. Compare any bid with a free private listing.

Pros

  • Hot Car badge flags used cars with 70% odds of selling within a week
  • Deal badges compare each asking price with the closest comparable vehicles
  • Private listings are free, with no paid placement, for 1992-or-newer cars
  • Lot Assistant pulls pricing and history from a photo taken on the lot
  • Loan prequalification is a soft credit inquiry and stays valid for 30 days
  • Your Garage tracks your own car's market value and forecasts where it goes

Cons

  • Dealer contact forms share your details with that dealership; reviewers report follow-up calls
  • Sponsored listings appear inside search results, between the cars you filtered for
  • Reviewers say alerts ignore chosen trims and colors, and filters skip truck bed length
  • English only, and it needs Android 11 or iOS 17 at minimum

Verdict

We score it 7.1. The deal badges and Hot Car odds add price and urgency signals that a raw results list lacks, Lot Assistant adds a photo lookup at the dealership, and private sellers list for free. Take it if you are shopping dealer stock and want price context before you call. Skip it if you guard your phone number closely, since every dealer contact passes your details on, or if you need truck-specific filters such as bed length.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is the Cars.com app free?

Yes. Searching, saving cars, price-drop alerts and private listings cost nothing, and Google Play shows no in-app purchases. The company earns from dealerships, 19,343 of them as of June 2026, and from advertising: the Play listing carries a Contains ads badge, and sponsored listings appear inside search results.

2

What does Great Deal mean on Cars.com?

It means the asking price sits well below the market value estimated from the closest comparable vehicles. Good Deal means at or slightly below that average, and Fair Price slightly above it. The model weighs equipment and regional demand as well as year, make, model and trim. It rates the price only, so check the vehicle history and get an inspection before you buy.

3

Does Cars.com prequalification affect your credit score?

No. Prequalification is described as a soft inquiry with no impact on your score, though the form asks for your Social Security number, date of birth, employment and income. The result expires 30 days after you apply, and the dealer decides which lenders receive the application. The company is not a lender, so confirm the rate and terms with the lender before signing.

4

How do I delete my Cars.com data?

Email privacy@cars.com or call 312-601-5000; the privacy policy lists both for deletion requests, and the Google Play data-safety form confirms that a deletion route exists. Marketing emails are handled separately, through the opt-out link in each message. The policy page was last updated on November 30, 2021, so check it for changes before you send a request.

5

Is Cars.com better than Autotrader or CARFAX?

For price context, yes: three deal badges and Hot Car odds explain a listing faster. Autotrader puts a Kelley Blue Book Price Advisor on every listing and has a Delivery to Your Door filter, while the CARFAX app includes a free history report with every used car. Shoppers focused on accident and ownership records will get more from CARFAX.
