Nothing in the app is sold: Google Play lists no in-app purchases and no ads badge. Each listing in the 40,000-plus inventory links a free Experian AutoCheck history report, and two buttons decide what happens next. Reserve holds a car at its current store for free, and since a September 2025 update the app alerts you when a car someone else reserved becomes available again. The hold takes no deposit, and a January 2026 Play review complains that desirable cars sit reserved for weeks. Ship moves a car to your nearest store for a distance-based fee that the retailer describes as separate from the purchase and nonrefundable. The 10-day Money Back Guarantee refunds the car, not that fee, so returning a long-distance transfer still costs money.

Pre-qualification is the strongest tool here. It is a soft inquiry with no effect on your credit score, it can take as little as five minutes, and the personalized terms stay valid for 30 days. Buyers who finance through CarMax Auto Finance then run the loan from the same app: statements, saved payment methods, scheduled payments and a Plan your payoff tool. Linking a loan asks for the account number, your date of birth and the last four digits of your Social Security number. This is also where the app breaks most often. Play reviews from September 2026 describe sign-in sending them to a web page and back to the app still logged out, and a two-step code that resets when you switch apps to read it. A May 2026 review adds that owners of the retired OwnersPlus app lost maintenance and fuel-economy tracking.

Credit Score, Precise Location and Ad IDs: What the App Collects

The Google Play data-safety form lists name, email, phone number, address and purchase history as collected, plus your credit score and other financial details as optional fields. Device IDs and user IDs may be shared with other companies, including for advertising or marketing. Apple's privacy label goes further: identifiers can be used to track you across other companies' apps and websites, and precise location is linked to your identity. The App Store listing also warns that the app may use your location even when it is not open. Data travels encrypted, and the Play form confirms you can request deletion. One August 2026 reviewer who blocked trackers says listings and photos refused to load. Pre-qualifying or linking a loan is what adds credit and financial data, so browsers who skip both share less.
