Best Car Apps for Buying and Fixing a Car, Ranked
Car Scanner ELM OBD2 is the best car app: with a small adapter in the diagnostic port it reads and clears fault codes, shows live sensor data and cost
RepairSolutions2 is Innova's free diagnostic app, and it reads codes only through Innova and BLCKTEC scan tools; generic ELM327 dongles will not connect. Paired with one, it turns a scan into a report with a likely fix, an OEM part number and ASE-verified repair notes. Without a tool it still shows recalls, service bulletins and maintenance for a typed-in VIN. The main limit is geography: it works only inside the USA and Canada.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-10-01. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
Without hardware, the app asks for a VIN and current mileage, then opens Vehicle Care: scheduled maintenance with estimated costs, recalls, technical service bulletins, warranty status, a Cost to Own calculator and plain-English definitions of trouble codes. Predicted Repairs lists parts with a statistical chance of failing within the next 12 months. Reading or erasing codes needs a tool from Innova's 5xxx or xxxxRS series, an Innova dongle or a BLCKTEC unit; Innova's own FAQ says generic and ELM327 adapters will not work. On Innova's site the entry 5210 handheld lists at $99.99 and the bidirectional 5610 at $349.99; prices vary by retailer and may change.
A Check Engine scan lists stored, pending and permanent codes, each with a severity rating, a plain-language definition and its effect on the car. Under Most Likely Fix the app names the part and an OEM part number with a retailer price; in the store screenshots a P0113 intake-air-temperature code points to a Chrysler sensor at about $30.52. The Live Data Overlay plots parameters such as both fuel-trim banks on one graph, and sessions can be recorded. The September 2026 update added guided drive-cycle procedures in App Control and erasing TCM and TPMS codes one by one on supported tools. The weak spot is report generation: Play reviews from 2020 to late 2025 describe scans that stall halfway with a no-data message or a failed report.
There are no ads and no required subscription. Paid extras are tied to one vehicle: on the US App Store a Vehicle History Report costs $9.99, and a MOTOR plan with OEM wiring diagrams, component locations, test procedures and DTC documents costs $14.99 for a month or $29.99 for a year per VIN. At the November 2024 launch, the release notes listed Toyota and Honda data as unavailable. Prices are regional and may change. The bigger cost is the hardware lock-in: BlueDriver Pro sells for $139.95 with no subscription, FIXD pairs a $59.99 sensor with a Premium plan billed annually, and Car Scanner ELM OBD2 works with generic ELM327 adapters.
Innova's Android pairing guide asks for the Nearby devices permission plus Precise Location, noting that Approximate location cannot find the tool and that the app does not track you. Sign-in is required, and several Play reviewers from 2024 to 2026 object to it. The store artwork promises 'We don't track or sell your data', yet Apple's privacy label lists identifiers, usage data and diagnostics as data used to track you across other companies' apps. On Google Play the developer declares no sharing with third parties, encryption in transit and deletion on request. The November 2024 terms send disputes to binding individual arbitration with JAMS in Orange County, California.

The score rests on reports that go further than a bare code reader: a likely fix with a part number, recalls, maintenance costs and optional MOTOR wiring data from $14.99. Take it if you own an Innova or BLCKTEC scanner, or plan to buy one, and you live in the USA or Canada. Skip it if you have a generic ELM327 dongle, drive outside those two countries, or want a scanner app that works without an account and a steady internet connection.

Only partly. Without a tool you can enter a VIN and mileage to see scheduled maintenance, recalls, service bulletins, warranty status, predicted repairs and code definitions. Reading and erasing codes needs an Innova 5xxx or xxxxRS-series tool, an Innova dongle or a BLCKTEC unit. Innova states that generic dongles and ELM327 adapters will not work with the app.
Yes, if your tool supports those systems. Innova lists Global Scan, ABS brakes, SRS airbags and an all-module Network Scan among the data its handhelds pass to the app. Coverage depends on the tool model and on the vehicle's make, model and year, and a 2026 Play reviewer notes SRS codes could be read but not reset.
On the US App Store a MOTOR plan costs $14.99 for one month or $29.99 for one year, and each plan covers a single VIN. It adds OEM wiring diagrams, component locations, test and repair procedures and DTC documents. A Vehicle History Report is a separate $9.99 purchase. Prices are regional and may change.
Partly. Since August 2026, compatible dongles can run OEM scans without a connection, and offline reports convert into full reports once the phone is back online. Fixes, parts, recalls and maintenance data load from Innova's servers, and Play reviewers in 2025 and 2026 describe being stopped by server outage messages.
No. Innova states the app works only while the phone is physically in the USA or Canada, and that faking a location will not get around the block. A 2024 Play review from Mexico describes every function failing. Outside those two countries, Car Scanner ELM OBD2 is an alternative that works with generic ELM327 adapters.
