About Toyota

This free app is the required front door to Toyota's U.S. connected services: remote start and locks, tire and door status, dealer booking, roadside help and Toyota Financial Services payments. Its edge is a long free safety layer, with Safety Connect and Service Connect trials running at least five years on 2026 models. Its weak spot is remote start, sold only in a $15-a-month bundle once a one-year trial ends.

Toyota App Review: Five Free Years of Safety, One Year of Remote Start

Remote Start After the 1-Year Trial: $15 a Month, Bundled Only

On most 2026 models, Remote Connect — remote start, door locks and Last Parked Location — comes with a one-year trial; the bZ and C-HR get three years plus Digital Key. Safety Connect, with its SOS button and collision notification, and Service Connect's health reports run at least five years. After the remote trial, owners of 2022-and-newer cars cannot buy Remote Connect alone: it ships only inside Music Lover or Go Anywhere at $15 a month, or Premium at $25, one plan per vehicle. By contrast, the Ford app lists remote start and locking at no extra cost, and Hyundai's Bluelink+ includes them for new buyers of 2024-and-newer models. A December 2024 Play review objecting to the bundle has 1,258 helpful votes. Prices vary and can change.

Remote Connect's Fine Print: The 7-Day Rule and Two 10-Minute Starts

The Advanced Remote screen shown in the store holds up to ten tap-and-hold buttons, from Start and Unlock to Windows, Moonroof, Horn and Hazards, depending on the model. The official troubleshooting checklist explains most failed starts: the car must have been driven within the last 7 days, with doors locked, hood and trunk shut, the low-fuel light off and the smart key outside. After two full 10-minute cycles in a row, someone has to start the engine by hand, and manual-transmission models get no remote start at all. Digital Key turns the phone into a Bluetooth key that can be shared with up to seven people, yet Android reviewers on version 3.5.0 say it deletes itself and will not install while Developer Options is switched on. Wear OS and Apple Watch companions handle start and stop.

Master Data Consent, the Data Privacy Portal and the 3G Lesson

Every connected feature requires accepting the Connected Services Terms of Use and a Master Data Consent. Google Play's Data safety section lists name, email, address, phone number, device IDs and app interactions as shareable with other companies; the App Store page warns the app may use location even when closed. Toyota's privacy notice, updated July 1, 2026, keeps location data up to 7 years and driving data such as speed and braking up to 15 years, and sends it to insurers only after a separate usage-based insurance opt-in. The Data Privacy Portal under Account shows what each car transmits; declining its Vehicle Connectivity Consent stops all transmission and every connected service. Connectivity also expires: when 3G networks closed, Safety Connect stopped on November 1, 2022 in cars such as 2010–2019 4Runners, with no retrofit, and the listing warns a 4G shutdown would end services the same way.

Pros

  • Safety Connect and Service Connect trials last at least five years on 2026 models
  • Advanced Remote adds windows, moonroof, horn and hazards beyond start and locks
  • Digital Key can be shared with up to seven people
  • Wear OS and Apple Watch companions start and stop the engine
  • Status tab shows per-tire pressure, open doors and window positions
  • No ads, and an Assist 24/7 roadside button sits on the dashboard

Cons

  • After the trial, remote start is sold only inside plans from $15 monthly
  • Remote start is refused if the car went undriven for over 7 days
  • Android reviewers report Digital Key deleting itself and failing with Developer Options on
  • Recent reviewers describe forced sign-outs as often as daily, even with biometrics

Verdict

The score reflects a capable remote toolkit held back by price and reliability. Take it if your 2022-or-newer model is still inside its trial, or if Safety Connect's SOS button and collision notification matter to you; they run at least five years on 2026 cars. Think twice if remote start is all you want: after the trial it costs $15 a month in a bundle, while the Ford app and Hyundai's Bluelink+ include it for new owners at no extra cost.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is remote start free on the Toyota app?

Only during the trial. Remote Connect, which includes remote start, is free for one year on most 2026 models and for three years on the bZ and C-HR. After that, 2022-and-newer vehicles need a paid plan from $15 a month, while Safety Connect and Service Connect stay free for at least five years. Prices vary by region and may change.

2

Why won't my car remote start from the Toyota app?

Usually a precondition is unmet. The official checklist requires a car driven within the last 7 days, locked doors, a closed hood and trunk, no low-fuel light and the smart key outside. Only two full 10-minute cycles can run back to back before a manual start, and manual-transmission models have no remote start.

3

How much does Toyota Remote Connect cost per month?

It is not sold alone on 2022-and-newer vehicles. Remote Connect comes inside Music Lover or Go Anywhere at $15 a month, or Premium at $25 with both Drive Connect and Integrated Streaming. Only one plan can be active per car. In 2021, standalone Remote Connect cost $8 a month or $80 a year. Prices can change.

4

How do I cancel my Toyota connected services subscription?

Open My Garage, then Subscriptions, choose your plan and tap Manage Subscription, or call 1-800-331-4331. Remaining trials stay active after you cancel a paid plan, and changes take effect at the next monthly period. Cancel before selling the car: the plan stays with that vehicle, while unused trials pass to the next owner.

5

Does the Toyota app share my driving data?

The app is the gateway to it. Remote features require accepting a Master Data Consent, and Google Play's Data safety section lists name, contact details and device IDs as shareable. Toyota's privacy notice says driving and location data reach insurers only if you opt in to usage-based insurance, and the Data Privacy Portal under Account lets you review or change consent per vehicle. Read the consent screen before accepting.
