About Carfax - New & Used Cars

The CARFAX app is a used-car search that attaches a free CARFAX Vehicle History Report to every used listing it shows, next to a History-Based Value estimate and, when the dealer supplies them, fees and price history. The catch sits in the VIN box: checking a car you found elsewhere costs $49.99 a report on the US App Store, and the Android version lists no in-app purchases at all.

CARFAX App Review: Free Reports on Listings, $49.99 for Any Other Car

Free reports on every listing, $49.99 for any other VIN

Every used car in the search results links to its full history report at no charge, and the iPhone release notes of November 2025 extended that to every car in the app. CARFAX cites more than 151,000 data sources and over 35 billion records, and its reports cover vehicles built since 1981, when the 17-character VIN became standard. For any other car, a single report on the US App Store costs $49.99, two cost $69.99, four $119.99, ten $274.99 and twenty $499.99; prices are regional and may change. Google Play lists no in-app purchases, and Android reviewers since 2025 describe tapping Run Report on a VIN and being told no reports remain, with no way to pay.

History-Based Value and Show Price Details on each listing

Badges such as Great Value, Good Value, Great Reliability and CARFAX 1-Owner sit above the asking price, and the report places that price on a Good-to-Great scale built from the car's own record. The company's published example values a no-accident 2012 Toyota Camry SE at $14,230 and an accident-reported one at $13,410. Since July 2026, Show Price Details opens dealer fees and the car's price history when the dealer provides them, and the Payment Calculator has used current market interest rates and loan terms since October 2025. The weak spot is reliability: Android reviews from January 2025 to July 2026 report the free-report button returning an error, and Original Window Sticker failing to generate.

One make per search, ZIP-bound saved searches and emailed sign-in codes

Google Play reviewers in 2025 and 2026 say a search holds one make and one body style, so a buyer weighing a Ford against a Chevy runs two searches, and that switching back to all makes wipes the other filters. Saved searches start from a ZIP code, and several 2026 reviews say a nationwide radius cannot be saved. After updates in July and August 2026, reviewers describe being logged out, waiting on an emailed code instead of a password, or being blocked for unusual activity. The iPhone build shipped 17 updates between January and September 2026, most with identical release notes.

Criteo, RTB House and a 'data isn't encrypted' declaration

The privacy statement, last updated February 19, 2026, names Criteo, RTB House and Google's Firebase Analytics among partners for targeted advertising, and says CARFAX does not store precise location or full card numbers. Apple's label lists browsing history, identifiers and usage data as used to track you across other companies' apps. On Google Play, the developer declares sharing name, email, phone number, approximate location and in-app search history, partly for advertising, and states that data is not sent over a secure connection. The same form lists photos and voice recordings among shared data, marked for app functionality, and treats email and web browsing history as optional collection. Deletion can be requested from the developer.

Pros

  • Every used listing links to its full vehicle history report for free
  • History-Based Value prices a car by its accidents, owners and service records
  • Show Price Details reveals dealer fees and price history when available
  • Alerts for price drops, new listings and sold cars on followed vehicles
  • No ads label on Google Play, and searching costs nothing
  • iPhone version supports VoiceOver, Voice Control and Dark Interface

Cons

  • Reports on cars outside the listings cost $49.99 each on the US App Store
  • Android version has no in-app purchases, so reports cannot be bought there
  • Reviewers report filters resetting, one make per search and sign-in code loops
  • Declares sharing phone number and location for advertising, and no encryption in transit

Verdict

We score the app 7.0. A free history report and History-Based Value on every used listing are a strong reason to search here; clumsy filters, sign-in bugs and broad data sharing pull the score down. Take it if you are shopping dealer inventory and want each car's accident and owner record before calling. Skip it if you mostly need reports on cars found elsewhere, especially on Android, or if ad-linked sharing of your phone number bothers you.

Core function8.5A full history report on every used listing plus History-Based Value; any other VIN needs a paid report.
Ease of use6.5Reviewers cite one make per search, filters that reset and saved searches tied to a ZIP code.
Monetisation7.0Searching is free with no ads label on Play, but outside reports run $49.99 each on iPhone.
Performance6.02026 Play reviews report free-report button errors, logouts after updates and window stickers failing to generate.
Privacy & permissions5.5Phone number, location and search history shared partly for advertising; Play form says data isn't encrypted in transit.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is the CARFAX report free in the CARFAX app?

Yes, for used cars listed in the app: each listing links to its full history report at no charge. A VIN or plate you enter yourself is a paid report, $49.99 on the US App Store, with regional prices. The Android version lists no in-app purchases, so reports cannot be bought there.

2

How does CARFAX History-Based Value work?

It adjusts a car's estimated value for its reported history, such as accidents, owner count and service records. CARFAX's own example values a 2012 Toyota Camry SE at $14,230 with no accidents and $13,410 with them. In the app the result appears as a Good-to-Great scale, alongside badges such as Great Value and CARFAX 1-Owner.

3

How much does a CARFAX report cost in the app?

One report costs $49.99 on the US App Store, and packs lower the unit price: two for $69.99, four for $119.99, ten for $274.99 and twenty for $499.99, or $25 each. Prices vary by region and can change. Pair any report with an inspection: CARFAX itself states it does not have the complete history of every vehicle.

4

Does the CARFAX app work offline?

No. Search results, history reports and price alerts all load from CARFAX servers, so the app needs a connection. To leave, Google Play's Data safety form says you can ask the developer to delete your data, and marketing texts stop when you reply STOP to the sending number, such as short code 227329.

5

What are the best alternatives to the CARFAX app?

Cars.com, Autotrader and CarMax are the closest picks. Cars.com grades listings as Great Deal, Good Deal or Fair Price against local prices and cites over 10 million dealership reviews. Autotrader puts a Kelley Blue Book Price Advisor on every listing across more than 6 million cars. CarMax shows only its own 40,000-plus cars, at upfront prices, with free history reports.
