Best Comics and Manga Apps, Ranked

Shueisha's official reader posts new Weekly Shonen Jump and Shonen Jump+ chapters in English at midnight Japan time, the same moment they appear in Japan. Its twist is First Read Free: every chapter of an ongoing English series opens once at no cost, and MANGA Plus MAX plans from $1.99 a month in the US remove that limit. The catch: chapters only stream, and a subscription cannot move between iPhone and Android.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-10-01. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
The first three and newest three chapters of every series stay free to reread, and a finished series keeps its last three or six chapters open for 30 days after the finale. Since January 2022, First Read Free has let app users open every other chapter of ongoing English and Indonesian simulpub series exactly once; the pass is used up the moment the reader closes. A crash triggers a reread prompt, but Shueisha's help center says used tickets cannot be refunded. Google Play reviews from February 2025, with 908 helpful votes, and September 2026 describe losing chapters to an accidental back swipe or a page that never loaded. The offer is app-only, and one-shots become Deluxe-only 90 days after publication.
Chapters go live at 12:00 AM Japan Standard Time, and the home screen lays the week out as a Monday-to-Sunday release calendar. Inside the reader, Reading Direction switches between horizontal and vertical scrolling. Shueisha's help center notes that vertical mode cuts double-page spreads into upper and lower halves, so horizontal is the way to see them joined. Play reviews with 1,548 and 112 helpful votes say panning a zoomed page flips to the next one. Under each chapter, comments sort by likes or recency, and each reader may post at most two per chapter per day. A Content Ratings page under My Shelf settings explains the rating icon shown on every series page.
In the US, Standard costs $1.99 a month, with the first month free for first-time subscribers, and covers 100+ ongoing titles and 8,000+ chapters; a series that ends drops out of Standard after a while. Deluxe costs $4.99 and covers 440+ titles and 23,000+ chapters, adding completed runs such as Dragon Ball, NARUTO and BLEACH plus older one-shots. Prices vary by region and can change. Both plans are advertised as ad-free, though the official plan page footnotes that select ads may still appear. Plans include English titles only and are not sold in Japan, China or South Korea. Shueisha gives no refunds. VIZ's Shonen Jump membership, by comparison, costs $3.99 a month for 20,000+ chapters.
Every chapter streams: the help center confirms manga cannot be downloaded, paid plan or not. Reviews dating back to 2020 ask for an account that syncs across devices, and Shueisha confirms that user data and subscriptions cannot cross between iOS and Android; switching means cancelling, subscribing again and recreating your username. Support is English-only, through a ticket portal that needs its own account, and Shueisha posted a service disruption notice on September 12, 2026. The Google Play Data safety form lists approximate location collected partly for advertising and offers no way to request deletion. Some 2026 reviews criticize translation quality, and a September 2026 user survey asked readers their view of AI translation.

We score it 7.3. Same-day Shonen Jump chapters, a First Read Free pass for every ongoing English series and a $1.99 Standard plan earn most of that; streaming-only reading, free reads lost to a stray swipe and a subscription that cannot cross from iPhone to Android cost the rest. Take it if you follow One Piece, Kagurabachi or other ongoing Jump series in English. Skip it if you need offline reading, read mainly in Portuguese or Indonesian, or switch phone platforms often.

Partly. The first three and newest three chapters of every series are free to reread, and First Read Free in the app opens every other chapter of ongoing English series once. Rereads, finished series and older one-shots need a MANGA Plus MAX plan.
No. Shueisha's help center says the service only streams manga, even on a paid plan. A stable connection matters most during First Read Free, because a chapter that fails to load can still use up your one free read.

Cancel in your App Store or Google Play subscriptions; access lasts until the paid period ends. On a new phone with the same system, use Restore In-App Purchases under My Shelf, Settings, User Status. Moving between iPhone and Android means cancelling, subscribing again and choosing a new username.
VIZ's Shonen Jump app costs $3.99 a month for 20,000+ chapters, with a free first week and a VIZ account that syncs progress across web and app, though only in ten countries. Square Enix's Manga UP! unlocks free chapters through daily logins and sells a Vault Pass covering 30,000+ chapters.
