Best Comics and Manga Apps, Ranked
Shonen Jump is the best comics app: the newest chapters of many Shueisha series are free on the day they come out in Japan, and $3.99 a month opens a
DC's official comics subscription puts 27,000+ issues and graphic novels on iPhone, iPad and Android, and how soon new issues arrive depends on the plan: six months after print on Standard, 30 days on Ultra. Ultra also opens more than 5,000 Vertigo, Black Label and collected-edition titles, while DC GO! recuts stories for vertical scrolling. The weak spot is the Android reader, where grey pages and failed downloads keep turning up in reviews.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-10-01. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
The Standard tier costs $7.99 a month or $74.99 a year in the US, the same prices DC set for the January 2021 relaunch, and new issues reach it six months after they hit comic shops. Ultra arrived in October 2022 as an annual plan and gained a $12.99 monthly option in February 2025; the annual version is $119.99. It cuts the wait to 30 days and adds more than 5,000 Vertigo, DC Black Label and collected-edition titles. Annual Ultra adds one free printed graphic novel, arriving 10 to 12 weeks after you send an address. Each plan starts with a seven-day trial, once per person. Prices vary by region and can change.
DC GO!, launched in October 2024, turns comics into vertical-scroll episodes; its original series run 26 episodes a season. Absolute Batman, Absolute Superman and Absolute Wonder Woman joined in February 2025, each with a first episode readable without a subscription, and the Runway to Ruin crossover, running October 1 to 29, 2026, needs only a free account. Since July 2023, every paid tier has also had a manga mode that reads right to left in page-scroll or panel view, used for Kodansha co-productions like Superman vs. Meshi. Conversions are uneven: an August 2026 reviewer said Go mode breaks good paneling, and a September one said panel-by-panel mode skips panels.
Google Play reviews from 2024 through September 2026 describe pages that load half black or turn grey mid-issue. DC's help center covers a related Android fault, an Alfred screen that appears after a few pages. It blames weak connections, the cache and older Android versions, and suggests switching off Cache Books While Reading under More, then Settings. DC publishes no cap on offline downloads, yet reviewers from March to May 2026 reported downloads failing, especially volumes and omnibuses, and there is no way to download a whole series at once. One reviewer said a May 4 update fixed their problems. In August 2026, two others said the sign-up button in the Android app did nothing.
On Android, the Data safety form says device IDs may be shared with other companies for advertising, along with email and user IDs; name and purchase history are collected, and deletion can be requested. Apple's label adds that identifiers and usage data may track you across other companies' apps, and coarse location is collected. The service runs in 19 countries, the browser reader only in the US and UK, Amazon Fire tablets are unsupported, and one membership covers one user. Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking reviewers point out that the comics are English only. Marvel Unlimited charges $9.99 a month or $69 a year and adds issues as soon as three months after print, so Standard DCUI costs more per year and waits twice as long.

We score DCUI 7.1. The catalog and the 30-day Ultra window earn most of it; an unreliable Android reader and device IDs shared for advertising cost the rest. Take Ultra if you follow current DC series and want Vertigo and Black Label in the same app, or Standard if back issues are enough. Skip it if you read mainly on Android with a patchy connection, want comics in a language other than English, or live outside the 19 supported countries.

Thirty days after print on Ultra and six months on Standard, with new titles added weekly on both. Little is free beyond the seven-day trial: some DC GO! webcomic episodes, including the Runway to Ruin crossover running until October 29, 2026, which needs only a free account.
Yes, on iPhone, iPad and Android, and DC publishes no cap on downloads. Reliability is the issue: Play reviewers between March and May 2026 reported downloads failing, especially volumes and omnibuses, and there is no option to grab a whole series at once.
Ultra costs $12.99 a month or $119.99 a year in the US; Standard is $7.99 or $74.99. In the UK, Ultra is £10.99 a month or £87.99 a year. Prices vary by region and can change. On the website, DC takes Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover and PayPal, but not gift or prepaid cards.
Cancel where you subscribed: web plans under Settings, then Subscription; App Store plans in iPhone Settings, your name, Subscriptions; Google Play plans through the Transactions page in Google Wallet. Deleting the app does not stop billing. Fees are non-refundable, but access lasts until the paid period ends, and switching between Standard and Ultra may bring a pro-rated refund.
For new issues, Ultra is faster: 30 days against Marvel Unlimited's three months, at $12.99 against $9.99 a month. Standard is slower and dearer per year than Marvel's $69 annual plan, and Marvel lists 30,000+ comics. DC comics you bought on Comixology stay in Amazon's Kindle app and do not appear in DCUI.
