About Manga UP!

Manga UP! is free to read in small daily doses: POINTS refill twice a day and open only normal chapters, while the newest Advance chapters need coins. It is Square Enix's own English reader, with full runs of Fullmetal Alchemist and Soul Eater and near-simultaneous chapters of The Apothecary Diaries. The main limit is the paywall's shape: chapters are cut into numbered parts, and the Vault Pass subscription still leaves coin-only chapters out.

Manga UP! Review: Official Square Enix Simulpubs, Sold in Chapter Parts

Twice-daily POINTS, Advance chapters and where free reading stops

Free reading runs on POINTS, which Square Enix's FAQ says are granted twice a day and can open only normal chapters. The allowance is capped at one daily portion and differs by country; Play reviewers in May 2024 and September 2026 describe it as roughly four parts per refill, or eight parts a day. Advance chapters, the newest releases, skip POINTS entirely and draw on Free COINS first, then Paid COINS. A chapter is often several parts: on the web version, a series opens with Chapter 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 marked Free, and everything after asks you to sign in. A September 2026 reviewer counted four parts in a typical chapter, each unlocked separately.

Vault Pass: 446 listed series, 228 of them included in full

Vault Pass arrived on April 8, 2024. The eligible-series page we checked on October 1, 2026 listed 446 series, but only 228 were marked All Ch.; the rest stop at a cutoff, such as The Apothecary Diaries at chapter 86 and Black Butler at chapter 223. Fullmetal Alchemist, Soul Eater, Horimiya and My Dress-Up Darling are included in full. The terms add three catches: chapters that need COIN are never covered, chapters opened with the pass lock again if you cancel, and Square Enix may raise the price with one month's notice. The one-month free trial bills automatically unless cancelled 24 hours before it ends.

What coins and the pass cost next to MANGA Plus and Shonen Jump

Paid COINS come only through Google Play or the App Store. The US App Store lists packs from 160 coins for $0.99 to 6,400 for $39.99, plus two Vault Pass entries at $4.99 and $6.99; the pass launched at $4.99 a month, so check the in-app price before the trial ends. Paid COINS do not expire while the service runs, and since a 2023 update, coin-unlocked chapters no longer disappear after the old 72-hour rental window. For comparison, MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA lists $1.99 Standard and $4.99 Deluxe plans, and Shonen Jump lists a $3.99 membership that includes offline downloads. These are US prices; they vary by region and can change.

Play says no data is shared, Apple's label lists tracking

Google Play's Data safety section says no data is shared and that only crash logs, diagnostics and other performance data are collected, for analytics. Apple's privacy label lists purchases, location, identifiers, diagnostics and other data as possibly used to track you across other companies' apps, with precise location among the analytics data. Both stores flag ads. Account deletion means messaging My Page > Settings > Support; there is no button and no phone support. Without a registered account, a reset install cannot be restored, and a June 2026 Play reviewer lost access to an active subscription that way. The FAQ also says some panels are edited to meet app-store content rules, and the App Store rates the app 13+.

Pros

  • Twice-daily POINTS let you read normal chapters without paying anything
  • Fullmetal Alchemist, Soul Eater and Horimiya are fully covered by Vault Pass
  • Ongoing series like The Apothecary Diaries arrive soon after Japanese release
  • Paid COINS never expire, and coin-unlocked chapters no longer time out
  • Hide and Stealth options keep chosen series out of feeds and history
  • One registered account syncs reading across up to three devices

Cons

  • Chapters are split into numbered parts, each unlocked with POINTS or coins separately
  • Vault Pass excludes coin-only chapters and caps 218 of 446 listed series
  • No offline downloads, no vertical scrolling mode, and screenshots are blocked
  • 2026 reviews report the reader jumping back to chapter one

Verdict

We scored it 6.6 because the catalog is the real draw, with full runs of Fullmetal Alchemist and Soul Eater and near-simultaneous chapters of current Square Enix hits, while split chapters and a subscription with exclusions pull the value down. Take it if you read a few chapters a day or want Square Enix's completed series on Vault Pass. Skip it if you binge current series on release day, need offline reading or vertical scrolling, or mostly follow Shueisha titles, which live on MANGA Plus.

Core function8.0Square Enix's own English catalog of 350+ series, near-simultaneous new chapters, and full runs of Fullmetal Alchemist and Soul Eater.
Ease of use6.5Three item types, chapters cut into parts, and a swipe-only page reader with no long-strip mode.
Monetisation5.5Free POINTS help, but the pass costs more than MANGA Plus Standard and still leaves Advance chapters to coins.
Performance6.0Light install, but 2025–2026 reviews report slow page-by-page loading and reading position resetting to chapter one.
Privacy & permissions6.0Play declares no data sharing, while Apple's label lists purchases, location and identifiers as possible tracking data.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is Manga UP! free to read?

Partly. POINTS are granted twice a day and unlock normal chapters at no cost, but the daily cap differs by country, and Advance chapters, the newest releases, need Free or Paid COINS. Because most chapters are split into parts, the free allowance usually covers a few full chapters a day rather than a whole volume.

2

Does Manga UP! release chapters at the same time as Japan?

Close to it. Square Enix's FAQ describes simulpubs as chapters posted soon after their Japanese release, typically at midnight Japan time. Those newest chapters are usually Advance chapters, so reading them on release day costs coins even with Vault Pass; a 2025 Play reviewer said some take up to a year to become normal chapters.

3

How much is Manga UP! Vault Pass and is it worth it?

It launched at $4.99 a month in April 2024, and the US App Store now lists entries at $4.99 and $6.99, with a one-month free trial. It is good value for completed series, since 228 of the 446 listed titles are included in full. For current chapters it is weaker, because coin-only chapters are excluded. Prices vary by region.

4

Can you read Manga UP! offline?

No. Chapters stream from Square Enix's servers and there is no download option; Play reviewers in June and September 2026 still list offline reading as missing. If you cancel Vault Pass, chapters you opened with it lock again, while coin-unlocked chapters stay readable and Paid COINS do not expire while the service runs.

5

Is Manga UP! legit, or is MANGA Plus a better alternative?

It is legitimate: Square Enix publishes it and says revenue goes to authors. The pick depends on the publisher. Manga UP! carries Square Enix titles such as Fullmetal Alchemist and Black Butler; MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA carries Shueisha series with $1.99 and $4.99 plans, and Shonen Jump from VIZ lists a $3.99 membership with offline downloads (US prices).
