About Shonen Jump Manga & Comics

VIZ Media's official app carries Shueisha manga in English: the latest chapters of many series arrive free on the day they come out in Japan, and a $3.99-a-month membership opens a vault of more than 20,000 back chapters. Up to 100 chapters can be saved for offline reading. The catch is the catalog split: Mature-rated series stay on the website, and Shogakukan titles need VIZ's separate app.

Shonen Jump App Review: A 20,000-Chapter Vault, Minus the Mature Series

Free chapters versus the $3.99 Shonen Jump Membership

Without paying, you can read the latest chapters of many running series on the day they come out in Japan, and VIZ keeps the newest three chapters of each ongoing series free. Reviewers in 2026 add that a series' first three chapters are free too. Everything in between sits in the vault of more than 20,000 chapters, open to members for $3.99 a month in the US; regional prices differ and can change. New members get one free week, one trial per person. The fee has risen twice: from $1.99 to $2.99, announced in December 2022, then to $3.99 in August 2025, by which point the old cap of 100 chapters a day had been lifted.

Offline downloads: 100 chapters that expire after seven days

You can save chapters for reading without a connection, up to 100 at a time, and a July 2025 reviewer notes that the cap counts across all your devices. Each download expires after seven days. Engadget reported in 2019 that read chapters are not removed automatically, so a full queue has to be cleared by hand, and a 2024 Play review confirms the seven-day expiry still applies. In August 2026, another reviewer found several chapters stuck on Waiting when queued together and had to download them one at a time. Landscape mode shows two-page spreads on tablets, but reviews from August and September 2026 say a recent update stopped unfolded foldable phones from showing them.

Mature series on viz.com only, and sign-ups only in the app

Part of the vault never reaches the app. When readers could not find Golden Kamuy there in 2019, VIZ explained that because the series is rated Mature, its vault chapters can be read only on the VIZ website, and Play reviews from 2025 and September 2026 still ask for an in-app option. Billing works the other way round: VIZ's FAQ says the website no longer sells new memberships, so you subscribe through Apple or Google inside the app. An October 2025 reviewer whose card had expired could not rejoin after switching to a flip phone. The service also runs in ten countries only: the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, the Philippines, Singapore and India.

MANGA Plus MAX and VIZ Manga compared, plus what the app collects

Shueisha's own MANGA Plus sells MAX Standard at $1.99 a month for 100+ ongoing titles, and Deluxe at $4.99 for 440+ titles and 23,000+ chapters including completed series, at US prices. VIZ Manga, the publisher's second app, covers Shogakukan series such as Frieren for $1.99 a month across 10,000+ chapters, and ICv2 noted in 2023 that the two VIZ catalogs do not overlap. On Android, the Data safety form lists crash logs, device IDs and app interactions collected for analytics, with nothing shared with third parties. Apple's label shows email, IDs and purchase history linked to you for VIZ's own marketing, with no tracking declared.

Pros

  • $3.99 a month opens a 20,000-chapter vault with no daily cap
  • Latest chapters of many series appear free, same day as Japan
  • Newest three chapters of every ongoing series stay free to read
  • Up to 100 chapters can be downloaded for offline reading
  • Play Data safety form lists no data shared with third parties
  • Reading progress syncs between the app and viz.com through one VIZ account

Cons

  • Mature-rated vault series are readable only on the viz.com website
  • Downloads expire after seven days and have to be fetched again
  • Shogakukan series need VIZ Manga, a separate $1.99 monthly subscription
  • 2026 reviews say an update broke two-page mode on foldable phones

Verdict

We score it 7.8. A $3.99 monthly fee for a 20,000-chapter Shueisha vault, plus free same-day chapters, earns most of that; web-only Mature series, seven-day download expiry and a clunky chapter-to-chapter flow cost the rest. Take it if you follow Jump series weekly or want to binge a finished one cheaply. Skip it if you mainly read Shogakukan titles, want downloads that stay put, read on a foldable, or live outside the ten countries VIZ serves.

Core function8.5More than 20,000 Shueisha chapters with same-day releases, though Mature-rated series are left out of the app.
Ease of use6.5Reviewers cite a nagging Wrong Direction prompt, a manual next-chapter button and awkward zoom; progress syncs with viz.com.
Monetisation8.5$3.99 a month in the US with a one-week trial, though the price has risen twice since 2022.
Performance7.02026 reviews describe download queues stalling on Waiting and two-page mode lost on foldables after an update.
Privacy & permissions8.0No third-party sharing declared on Android and no tracking on iOS; purchase history feeds VIZ's own marketing.

Frequently asked questions

1

Is the Shonen Jump app free?

Partly. The latest chapters of many running series are free on the day they come out in Japan, and the newest three chapters of each ongoing series stay free. Older chapters sit in the vault, which needs the $3.99-a-month membership in the US, with one free trial week per person. Prices vary by region and can change.

2

Can you download Shonen Jump manga to read offline?

Yes. You can keep up to 100 downloaded chapters at a time, and each expires after seven days, when it has to be downloaded again. Queued downloads can stall on Waiting; an August 2026 reviewer got around it by downloading chapters one at a time.

3

How much is a Shonen Jump membership?

It costs $3.99 a month in the US since August 2025, up from $2.99; prices are regional and can change. It unlocks the vault of more than 20,000 chapters with no daily reading cap. Digital volumes are sold separately: the App Store lists most at $6.99 each, and a Bleach novel at $10.99.

4

How do I cancel my Shonen Jump membership?

Cancel through the store that bills you. On iPhone, open Settings, tap your Apple ID name, then Subscriptions and Shonen Jump; on Android, use the Google Play Store app. Cancel before the trial week ends to avoid a charge. Coming back later means resubscribing in the app, since the website no longer sells new memberships.

5

What is the best alternative to the Shonen Jump app?

MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA is the closest: its MAX Standard plan costs $1.99 a month for ongoing series, and Deluxe costs $4.99 for 440+ titles including completed ones, at US prices. For Shogakukan series such as Frieren, Komi Can't Communicate or Inuyasha, VIZ Manga charges $1.99 a month for 10,000+ chapters.
