Shonen Jump is the best comics app: the newest chapters of many Shueisha series are free on the day they come out in Japan, and $3.99 a month opens a vault of more than 20,000 back chapters. We ranked the official comics, manga and webtoon apps in our catalogue on how much you can read free, what the subscription or the coins cost, and whether you can read offline. Marvel Unlimited is the binge pick, and Tapas is closing in March 2027. Prices are as of October 2026.

How we picked

Comics apps sell reading in three different ways: free same-day chapters, an all-you-can-read subscription, or coins paid per episode. Which one suits you depends on whether you follow a series every week or binge a finished one. We ranked the comics and manga apps in our catalogue on how much you can read for free, what the subscription or the coins really cost, and whether you can read offline. Prices are US figures as of October 2026 and come from each publisher's pages and store listings.

A rule of thumb before the list: if you follow a series every week, free same-day chapters cost nothing; if you binge a finished series, a flat subscription is cheapest; and coins per episode are the most expensive way to read anything long, because a hundred episodes at 30 coins each adds up fast.

All of these are official, licensed apps, which is why the chapters arrive on time and the artists get paid.

1. Shonen Jump — free new chapters and a $3.99 vault

Shonen Jump, VIZ Media's official app, wins because it does both jobs well. The latest chapters of many Shueisha series arrive free on the day they come out in Japan, and a $3.99 monthly membership opens a vault of more than 20,000 back chapters, enough to binge a finished series for the price of a coffee.

Up to 100 chapters can be saved for offline reading, though downloads expire after seven days. Mature-rated series stay on the website, Shogakukan titles need VIZ's separate app, and VIZ serves only ten countries. Our score: 7.8.

2. MANGA Plus — Shueisha's own reader, from $1.99

MANGA Plus posts new Weekly Shonen Jump and Shonen Jump+ chapters in English at midnight Japan time, the same moment they appear in Japan. First Read Free opens every chapter of an ongoing English series once at no cost, and MANGA Plus MAX plans start at $1.99 a month to lift that limit.

Chapters only stream, so there is no offline reading, a stray swipe can spend a free read, and a subscription bought on iPhone does not carry over to Android. Our score: 7.3.

3. Marvel Unlimited — 30,000 comics for $9.99 a month

Marvel Unlimited is an all-you-can-read subscription: more than 30,000 comics for $9.99 a month, with unlimited downloads on each device and Infinity Comics, a vertical-scroll line made only for the service.

New issues arrive about three months after they reach stores, so it suits working through decades of runs rather than following this week's issue. The app shows only a paywall until you start the 7-day trial, and a summer 2026 Android update locked many readers out behind an Unknown Age error. Our score: 7.2.

4. DC Universe Infinite — new issues in 30 days on Ultra

DC Universe Infinite carries more than 27,000 issues and graphic novels. On Standard, new issues arrive six months after print; on Ultra, after 30 days, and Ultra also opens more than 5,000 Vertigo, Black Label and collected-edition titles. DC GO! recuts stories for vertical scrolling.

The Android reader is the weak spot, with grey pages and failed downloads in recent reviews, and the service covers 19 countries. Our score: 7.1.

5. Manga UP! — Square Enix, a few chapters a day

Manga UP! is Square Enix's own reader, with full runs of Fullmetal Alchemist and Soul Eater and near-simultaneous chapters of The Apothecary Diaries. Free points refill twice a day and open normal chapters; the newest Advance chapters cost coins.

Chapters are cut into numbered parts, there is no offline reading, and the Vault Pass subscription still leaves coin-only chapters out. Our score: 6.6.

6. WEBTOON — free weekly episodes, coins for the back catalogue

WEBTOON is the biggest vertical-scroll comics app, with more than 100 million Google Play installs. Ongoing Originals post free weekly episodes, CANVAS lets anyone publish, and a Watch tab adds voiced Video Episodes.

Since the Daily Pass ended in May 2025, older episodes need ads or coins, with an early episode at about 7 coins by reviewers' count, and Premium leaves several ad types in place. Read it week by week, as the episodes come out, not as a binge of a finished series. Our score: 6.4.

7. Tappytoon — licensed Korean webcomics, per chapter

Tappytoon licenses Korean webcomics and web novels, including Solo Leveling, with comics in English, French and German. A series usually opens with about three free chapters, then charges 300 or 400 points each, roughly 36 to 57 cents at US pack prices.

There are no offline downloads, screenshots are blocked, and mature editions are sold only on the website. Our score: 6.3.

Pay-per-episode apps, and one that is closing

Lezhin Comics sells exclusive Lezhin Originals at 30 to 40 coins an episode, up to about a dollar, with a good offline reader, landscape mode and Wait Until Free timers on some series; the store editions hide mature titles, and the VIP plan is sold only on the website. WebComics has a large full-colour catalogue but only five ad-unlocked chapters a day.

Tapas is shutting down. Ink sales ended on October 1, 2026, and the service closes at 23:59 PT on March 31, 2027, taking unlocked episodes with it and with no refunds. Use its Wait Until Free timers to finish a series before then, and do not buy anything.

Bottom line

Install Shonen Jump first: free same-day chapters plus a 20,000-chapter vault for $3.99 a month is the best value in comics today. For Marvel or DC, pick the subscription of the universe you read, and choose DC's Ultra plan if you want new issues within a month. For webtoons, read WEBTOON's free weekly episodes and pay per chapter only for a series you cannot wait for.
