About Starbucks

Starbucks Rewards now runs on three levels: Green members earn 1 Star per dollar, Gold 1.2 and Reserve 1.7, and 200 Stars buy a handcrafted drink worth up to $10. The app ties that program to Mobile Order & Pay, a reloadable stored-value card and in-app delivery run by DoorDash. The catch: delivery earns no Stars and refuses the card balance, and late-September Android builds push sign-in through Google Chrome.

Starbucks Review: Rewards Favor Regulars, Delivery Earns Nothing

Stars in 2026: 1 to 1.7 Per Dollar, a Handcrafted Drink at 200

Since March 10, 2026, the US program has three levels. Green earns 1 Star per dollar; 500 Stars within 12 months unlock Gold at 1.2, and 2,500 new Stars in the following year unlock Reserve at 1.7. Stars count on stored-value, linked-card and scanned cash payments, but not on guest checkout or delivery. Redemption starts at 25 Stars for a $1 add-on, then a new 60-Star tier for $2 off, 100 for brewed coffee or a pastry up to $6, 200 for a handcrafted drink up to $10, and 300 or 400 for lunch or merchandise. A 200-Star drink takes about $200 at Green, $167 at Gold and $118 at Reserve. Green Stars lapse six months after the month earned, and a purchase, redemption or $30 digital reload in the prior month buys another month; Gold and Reserve Stars hold while the level does. Tiers may change.

Mobile Order & Pay: Five-Minute Pickup Windows, One Hour Ahead

Ordering ahead requires a Rewards account and location services switched on. Since May 11, 2026, the Review Order screen offers a Pickup Time choice: five-minute windows up to one hour out, drawn from a Smart Queue algorithm that balances café, drive-thru and mobile tickets at each store. Dunkin' lets its members schedule a full 24 hours ahead. Delivery sits behind a toggle on the same Order tab but behaves like a separate service: DoorDash couriers carry it, the card balance and Stars do not apply, Favorites are hidden, prices can run above in-store menus, and one order may be capped at $100 before tax, tip and fees. Service, delivery and small-order fees stack on top. The app keeps no delivery history and sends tracking by email or text, while DoorDash and Uber Eats, which carry the same menu, keep past orders.

Stored Value: $500 Card Cap, Auto-Reload and the $30 Bonus

Every account gets a digital card that works as a prepaid wallet. The card terms cap each card at $500 and $2,000 of activity a day, list a typical $5 minimum load, charge no dormancy or service fees and never expire the balance, but loaded money is nonrefundable unless the law requires otherwise. Under the 2026 rules the card earns the same 1 Star per dollar at Green as a linked credit card; the pull is the reload bonus of 10 Stars at $30 and 25 at $50, capped at 25 per reload. Auto-reload tops the card up on a date you pick or when the balance falls to a level you set, billed to a linked credit or debit card. A registered card's balance is protected from the moment you report it lost or stolen and moves to a replacement card, which an unregistered card cannot get.

Precise Location, Ad Sharing and the September 2026 Sign-In Change

The privacy notice revised January 22, 2026 says GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals may be used to find nearby stores, detect a phone in or around a café and tailor messages to your time and location patterns. The App Store listing warns the app may use location even when it is not open, and Apple's label lists a device ID for third-party advertising. Google Play's Data safety section says nothing is shared with other companies, yet the notice concedes that passing identifiers and transaction data to ad partners may count as a sale or share under state law, with a Do Not Sell or Share link to opt out. Reliability is the weaker story on Android: 17 of the 150 newest English Play reviews, posted September 23 to October 1, 2026, say sign-in now demands Google Chrome, and 49 of the 150 give one or two stars.

Pros

  • Gold and Reserve Stars never expire while the level is kept
  • New 60-Star tier takes $2 off a qualifying item
  • Scheduled pickup in five-minute windows up to one hour ahead
  • Stars earn on linked cards and scanned cash, not only stored value
  • Card balance never expires and carries no dormancy or service fees
  • Reserve members get a 30-day window to claim the birthday reward

Cons

  • Delivery orders earn no Stars and cannot use the card balance
  • Green-level Stars expire after six months without monthly activity
  • Late-September 2026 Android builds route sign-in through Google Chrome, Play reviewers report
  • Privacy notice allows sharing identifiers and purchase data with ad partners

Verdict

The app earns 7.0 for packing ordering, pay-by-scan, scheduled pickup and a three-level loyalty program into one free download without ads. Take it if you stop in a few times a week: Gold arrives at 500 Stars a year, and its Stars stop expiring. Think twice if you mostly order delivery, which earns nothing and refuses the card balance; DoorDash and Uber Eats keep better order history. Android users should expect sign-in friction after the September 2026 updates.

Core function8.5Ordering, pay-by-scan, three-level Rewards and scheduled pickup in one app; delivery drops Stars, Favorites and order history.
Ease of use7.5The Rewards menu shows each tier's Star price, but Play reviewers say item prices appear only at checkout.
Monetisation6.5No ads or in-app purchases, but nonrefundable loads, reload bonuses at $30 and $50 and delivery markups push spending up.
Performance5.549 of the 150 newest English Play reviews give one or two stars, many citing Chrome-only sign-in.
Privacy & permissions5.5Mobile orders need location services; Apple's label lists a device ID used for third-party advertising.

Frequently asked questions

1

How many Stars do you need for a free drink at Starbucks?

200 Stars get a handcrafted drink such as a latte, worth up to $10, and 100 Stars cover brewed coffee or tea up to $6. Green members earn 1 Star per dollar, Gold 1.2 and Reserve 1.7, so a 200-Star drink takes roughly $200, $167 or $118 of spending. Tiers and values may change.

2

Can you schedule a Starbucks mobile order for later?

Yes, up to one hour ahead. Since May 11, 2026, the Review Order screen offers five-minute pickup windows, such as 9:10 to 9:15 a.m., at North American stores with Mobile Order & Pay. Slots reflect each store's live Smart Queue, so availability varies.

3

What is the minimum reload on the Starbucks app?

The card terms list a typical $5 minimum load, and auto-reload can top up on a set date or when the balance drops to a level you choose. A digital reload of $30 adds 10 Bonus Stars and $50 adds 25. One card holds at most $500, and loaded money is nonrefundable unless state law says otherwise. Amounts may change.

4

Do Starbucks Stars expire?

Green-level Stars expire six months after the calendar month they were earned, unless you buy something, redeem a Reward or digitally reload $30 or more in the month before. Gold and Reserve Stars do not expire while you keep the level. An account with no Stars earned for two years can be unregistered, voiding its Stars.

5

Does the Starbucks app track your location?

Yes, when you allow it, and Mobile Order & Pay needs location services. The privacy notice covers GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth signals in and around stores, the App Store warns of use while the app is closed, and Apple's label lists a device ID for third-party advertising. Some features stop working without location.
