Asphalt Legends Review: 3.9 GB of Arcade Racing, With a Collection Problem

8-car online races with cross-platform lobbies

The core mode puts you against up to seven other drivers in real time, and the lobbies are cross-platform, so phone players race the same events as everyone else. Handling is arcade rather than simulation: drifting fills a boost meter, and the whole skill curve is about chaining drifts and jumps rather than braking lines. Clubs add a social layer with shared leaderboards and rewards, and private lobbies let a group race without strangers. None of that costs anything to enter, which is why the online side stays populated.

Controller support, and why it changes a 3.9 GB racer

Asphalt Legends supports physical controllers, which is rarer than it should be on phones and changes the game more than it changes most. Precise steering and a separate boost input remove the two biggest complaints about touch racing, and in a mode where you race real opponents that gap is competitive rather than cosmetic. Touch controls remain perfectly playable — the game is built around them — but a controller is the difference between finishing races and winning them. Gameloft lists controller support on the store page itself, so it is a declared feature rather than something that happens to work.

Where the money goes: Blueprints and upgrade levels

Cars are unlocked through blueprints and currency rather than bought outright, which means the fastest vehicles arrive either after long play or after spending. That is the standard arrangement for the genre and it is the honest weak point here: matchmaking can put a car built over months against one bought this week. The game hides it better than most because arcade handling rewards skill, but the ceiling on any given car is set by its upgrade level, and upgrades are the thing money accelerates.

Pros

  • Eight-player online races with cross-platform lobbies
  • Physical controller support, rare on mobile racers
  • 4.8 stars from more than a million ratings
  • Clubs and private lobbies included at no cost
  • Arcade handling forgiving enough for touch controls

Cons

  • 3.9 GB install before any downloaded content
  • Fastest cars arrive far sooner for people who spend
  • Upgrade level caps performance regardless of skill

Verdict

The 7.8 is for an arcade racer that gets the driving right and the collection wrong. Install it if you want fast eight-car online races on a phone, especially with a controller, and you can spare 3.9 GB. Think twice if you intend to stay free and competitive, because upgrade levels cap what any car can do and money reaches those levels faster than play does.

Gameplay8.0Drift-and-boost arcade racing that reads well at speed, with eight-car online lobbies.
Controls9.0Touch handling is forgiving and physical controllers are supported, unusual for the genre.
Replay value8.0Clubs, seasons and a large car list keep events rotating for months.
Graphics & sound9.0Presentation is the reason for the 3.9 GB, and it holds up on mid-range hardware.
Monetisation6.0Blueprints and upgrade levels mean paid collections outpace free ones in the same lobbies.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play Asphalt Legends offline?

The multiplayer races that form the core of the game need a connection, and so do club events and seasonal content. Some single-player content is playable without one, but treat this as an online game — most of what it offers assumes other drivers.

2

Is Asphalt Legends pay to win?

Partly. Cars are unlocked through blueprints and improved through upgrade levels, and money accelerates both, so a paid collection reaches top-tier vehicles far sooner. Arcade handling means skill still decides individual races, but the performance ceiling of a car is bought, not driven.

3

What do you need to run Asphalt Legends?

iOS 13.0 or later and 3.9 GB of free space, which is the largest install among the free racers on phones. Physical controllers are supported, and on mid-range hardware the presentation still holds together.

4

Can you race with friends?

Yes. A friend list and private lobbies let a group race without strangers, and Clubs add shared leaderboards and rewards on top. Lobbies are cross-platform, so phone players and other devices meet in the same events.

5

How long is a race in Asphalt Legends?

A single race runs one to two minutes, which is the format the whole game is built around — short events you can fit between other things. Club events and seasonal chains string those races together into longer sessions.
