About CSR 2 - Realistic Drag Racing

Drag racing reduced to two decisions: launch at the right revs, then shift at the right moment, six times in about eleven seconds. Between races the cars are tuned and painted in detail sharp enough to sell the licence. Apple lists loot boxes at 9+, the install is 1.8 GB, and Google Play carries an advertising badge.

CSR 2 Review: Eleven Seconds and Two Decisions

There Is No Steering

A race is a straight line, so everything comes down to the launch — holding the revs inside a marked band before the lights — and hitting each gear change in a narrow green window. Get both right and the run is a perfect start with a time in the elevens; miss one and the race is gone before the halfway mark. It is a rhythm game wearing a racing licence, and that stripped-down design is why it works on a phone where full circuit racing does not.

The Garage Is the Other Half

Cars are licensed, modelled closely and customised in depth: paint, wraps, wheels, interiors, plus tuning of gear ratios and tyre pressure that measurably changes a run. Beating city bosses unlocks the next tier, and crews organise players into groups for events. The presentation is the strongest of any racing game in this catalogue — the cars are the point, and they are rendered well enough that people spend the time painting them without racing at all. Older cars stay useful in lower tiers, so a collection is worth keeping rather than selling on.

Keys, Crates and an Advertising Badge

Progress runs on keys and crates: the App Store lists bronze, silver and gold key packs from $2.99 to $9.99, a crate at $3.99, gold from $2.99 to $9.99 and a fast-track at $1.99. Apple names loot boxes among the contents at a 9+ rating, and Google Play carries an advertising badge alongside the purchases. The audience is large and long-lived — 50 million installs, 4.6 stars from 5.32 million Play reviews, 4.7 from 900,000 App Store ratings, on a 1.8 GB install. Eleven years of updates sit behind that audience, which is a long run for a licensed racer.

Pros

  • Launch and shift timing are genuinely skilful
  • Races finish in about eleven seconds
  • Licensed cars modelled and customised in depth
  • Tuning gear ratios changes race times measurably
  • Rated 4.7 on the App Store across 900,000 ratings

Cons

  • Crates and keys are loot boxes by Apple's label
  • Advertising badge on top of the purchases
  • A 1.8 GB install for straight-line races
  • Progress stalls at higher tiers without upgraded parts

Verdict

The best-looking racing game on a phone, and the design is honest about what a phone can do: no steering, two timing decisions, eleven seconds a race. The garage is where the hours go, and the cars deserve them. What holds it back is the economy — crates, keys and advertising in a game that already sells a premium fantasy.

Gameplay7.5Two timing decisions per race, executed well; there is nothing else to do.
Controls8.5One button for shifting — the simplest input in this catalogue and the tightest.
Replay value7.5Car collecting, tuning and crew events, on a loop that never varies.
Graphics & sound9.0The best-looking cars on a phone, with paintwork worth photographing.
Monetisation5.0Loot boxes, key packs to $9.99 and advertising in a licensed racer.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can it be played offline?

No. Races, the garage and crew events are all validated on the server, so a connection is needed even for single-player ladders. Given that a race lasts eleven seconds, a signal drop costs less time here than in almost any other game.

2

What does it sell?

Keys and gold from $1.99 to $9.99, plus crates at $3.99 and fast-track passes. Keys open crates containing parts and cars, which Apple lists as loot boxes. Upgrades can be earned by racing, but the pace without spending is slow at the higher tiers.

3

How much space does it need?

1.8 GB and a phone capable of rendering detailed car models. The visuals are the whole selling point, so an older device will run it with reduced reflections and lighting rather than at full quality.

4

Is there multiplayer?

Live head-to-head races against other players run alongside the city ladders, and crews group players for shared events and rewards. Because races are so short, multiplayer here is closer to a series of quick duels than to a sustained session.

5

How long is a race?

About eleven seconds, with the menus around it taking longer than the racing. That makes it the most interruptible game in this catalogue — a session is however many races you feel like, and nothing is lost by stopping after one.
