About Hatsune Miku

SEGA and Colorful Palette's Vocaloid rhythm game answers the pay-to-win question in two parts: every song unlocks with Music Cards earned from story chapters and missions, but event points and top score ranks climb with the 4★ cards you pull. Charts run from Easy to three-finger Append. The trade-offs are an English-only, always-online client and game data that keeps growing after install.

Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage Review: Songs Are Earned, Top Scores Are Pulled

Is It Pay to Win? Music Cards Unlock Songs, 4★ Cards Lift Scores

New songs come from the Music Shop in exchange for Music Cards, which SEGA hands out for missions and story chapters. Siliconera's Jenni Lada noted in December 2021 that shows have no stamina lock. Bonus Energy only multiplies rewards; it refills one point every 30 minutes, five more cost 50 Crystals, and since update 6.0.0 up to 10 can go into one show. Money enters through the cards. Event points scale with your score and with event-bonus characters, and Lada saw a wall in front of A and S ranks for players who don't invest. Ranked Matches remove that variable: skills, Talent and SUPER FEVER switch off for these 1v1 duels, which unlock at Player Rank 20 with five full combos on Expert or higher.

Easy to Append: Five Standard Difficulties Plus a Three-Finger Tier

Charts mix taps, holds, flicks and trace notes, which only ask you to keep a finger down rather than time the release. Every song has Easy, Normal, Hard, Expert and Master, and selected songs add Append, which SEGA says needs at least three fingers. The song-select screenshot on the App Store rates M@GICAL☆CURE! LOVE ♥ SHOT! at 8, 14, 20, 28 and 30 across the standard tiers. Version 5.4.0 in June 2026 removed the old Master gate, a clear on Expert with seven or fewer Good-or-worse taps. Practice tools include LATE/EARLY/WRONG WAY markers and Mirrored Lanes, which flips patterns without changing rewards. D4DJ Groovy Mix offers a hands-free Audience Mode; the nearest thing here is Auto-Play, which spends Bonus Energy and skips Song Rewards.

SEKAI, 20 Voiced Characters and Nine Events in Under Three Months

The premise is a song called Untitled that opens SEKAI, worlds shaped by feelings, to teenagers in Shibuya. Twenty original characters are split into Leo/need, MORE MORE JUMP!, Vivid BAD SQUAD, Wonderlands x Showtime and Nightcord at 25:00, with Miku and five other Virtual Singers alongside, and main story chapters pay out Crystals and Music Cards. SEGA's news page lists nine events opening between July 7 and September 30, 2026; World Link events split into character chapters, as in Link the Beats!, six two-day chapters in September. MYSEKAI, a harvesting and furniture-building mode, reached the global version in January 2026, and 6.0.0 added birthday parties inside it. Before the 2021 launch, producer Tomokazu Ichikawa told Siliconera that songs keep their Japanese vocals without subtitles.

Gacha Bonus, $79.99 Packs and Seven Ad Networks: The Fine Print

Each banner lists its odds in-game under Gacha Details, then Drop Rate. The safety net is the Gacha Bonus: a pull made with paid Crystals adds 1 point, one made with free Crystals adds 0.5, and 100 points guarantee a 4★, but Limited Time and Colorful Festival banners have no Gacha Bonus. Character Pick Vouchers are the slower route: a 4★ costs 300, sold at 100 for $2.99 or earned one a day from an ad. US Crystal packs run from $0.99 to $79.99, and Colorful+ renews unless cancelled two days ahead; prices vary by region. The ads are rewarded videos, hidden from players registered as minors, served through seven ad networks that SEGA lists, including AppLovin. Google Play's data safety form says nothing is shared with third parties; Apple's label says identifiers and usage data may be used to track you.

Pros

  • Songs unlock with Music Cards earned from story chapters and missions
  • Append charts on selected songs demand three fingers beyond Master
  • Ranked Matches switch off card skills and Talent for 1v1 duels
  • Co-op Shows seat two to five players across iOS and Android
  • MYSEKAI and the 6.0.0 birthday parties add a building mode between songs
  • Rewarded ads are optional, and SEGA hides them from minors

Cons

  • Free-Crystal pulls earn half the Gacha Bonus toward a guaranteed 4★
  • Players report game data passing 5 GB within days of installing
  • Online-only and English-only, and the servers do not support IPv6
  • SEGA's minimum is an iPhone 11 or a Snapdragon 845 phone with 4 GB RAM

Verdict

We score it 7.7 because the charts, six difficulty tiers and nine events in under three months, nearly five years after launch, outweigh a gacha that rewards paid Crystals twice as fast as free ones. Take it if you want Vocaloid songs with real difficulty headroom, co-op on either platform and a voiced story between sessions. Skip it if your phone has under 4 GB of RAM or little free storage, if you need offline play, or if you'd rather play K-pop, which Rhythm Hive covers.

Gameplay8.5Six difficulty tiers up to three-finger Append, 2–5 player co-op and skill-only Ranked Matches across 600-plus songs.
Controls8.0Tap, hold, flick and trace notes with timing markers and Mirrored Lanes; Append needs three fingers on a phone.
Replay value9.0Nine events in under three months, character-by-character World Link chapters, Ranked seasons and MYSEKAI keep the calendar full.
Graphics & sound8.53D, 2D and original music videos plus a fully voiced story, paid for in gigabytes of extra downloads.
Monetisation5.5Songs unlock through play, but free pulls earn half the guarantee progress and limited banners offer none.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage offline?

No. The game connects to SEGA's servers at startup, shows can't be played during maintenance, and version 6.0.0 on September 29, 2026 was a mandatory update. SEGA's help center adds that the servers don't support IPv6, so a Failed to connect to server error may need a switch to an IPv4 network.

2

Is Colorful Stage pay to win?

Partly. Every song unlocks with Music Cards earned in play, and Ranked Matches ignore card skills and Talent, but event rankings and top score ranks favor strong 4★ cards. The Gacha Bonus guarantees a 4★ at 100 points, with paid-Crystal pulls worth 1 point and free ones 0.5. US Crystal packs cost $0.99 to $79.99; check the current price in the app, as it varies by region.

3

What phone do you need for Colorful Stage, and how much storage does it use?

SEGA lists an iPhone 11 on iOS 14, or Android 8.0 with a Snapdragon 845 or better and 4 GB of RAM. The store install is about 497 MB on iPhone and 214 MB on Android, but music videos and voice files download afterwards; players report 5 to 8 GB within days. The Music Video Files setting caps how many videos stay stored.

4

Can you play Colorful Stage with friends?

Yes. Co-op Shows hold two to five players, iOS and Android players can share a Private Room through its Room ID, and Virtual Shows gather avatars for scheduled live concerts. Ranked Matches add 1v1 seasons from Player Rank 20. Long BAD or MISS streaks, or a dropped connection, bring warnings and then a temporary co-op ban. BanG Dream! Our Notes also advertises five-player sessions.

5

How much time does Colorful Stage take each day?

As much as you like: shows have no daily cap, and Bonus Energy, which refills one point every 30 minutes, only multiplies rewards. Fixed daily items are small: one Challenge Show, MYSEKAI stamina that resets at 5 AM Pacific and character visits twice a day. New events open every week or two; the global version turned 4.5 years old in June 2026.
