About SongPop Classic

SongPop Classic is the 2015 SongPop 2 under the name it took in 2022, when FreshPlanet handed plain "SongPop" to its newer SongPop 3. Each challenge plays five recorded clips, and the fastest correct tap among four artists or titles takes the points, in turn-based duels or ranked party tournaments. Gameloft agreed to buy the studio in 2018. The catch: free play runs on ads, and parties require a linked account in a second app.

SongPop Classic Review: Sharp Music Duels, Heavy Ads and a Second App

Five Clips, Four Buttons: The Challenge Loop and the Coin Economy

A challenge starts with a playlist pick, then five recorded clips, each with four buttons naming artists or song titles; the faster the correct tap, the bigger the score. Opponents answer on their own turn: a friend, a random player or a Best Match chosen for similar taste. Wins, the Daily Spin and party rewards pay Coins, which buy playlists and power-ups such as Remove 2 Wrong Artists and Shuffle. Untried playlists offer a free "Try it!" trial. Unlike Trivia Crack, whose wheel picks among six categories, here you choose the playlist, so genre specialists keep their edge.

Parties, Four Leagues and the 2,000-XP Mastery Race

Party mode spends Tickets on tournament rounds against your league: Bronze covers levels 1–5, Silver 6–25, Gold 26–50 and Platinum 51 and up. First place earns that party's badge; duplicates level a badge up to eight stars, and an October 2025 update added Legendary levels beyond that. Gameloft's achievement guide lists 29 party genres. Mastering a playlist takes 2,000 XP of correct answers, and each new release opens a race with a top-100 leaderboard. Every Wednesday and Saturday an older list returns with 20–50 newer songs; joining its race resets your progress for five power-ups. Since January 13, 2023, parties have sat in a Special tab that requires an account linked to the separate SongPop app.

$9.99 SongPop Plus, $0.99 Revives and Ads Between Matches

Free accounts see ads between matches; Gameloft says none should interrupt a challenge. Rewarded videos add Tickets or double a Daily Bonus, at least five minutes apart. On the US App Store, SongPop Plus is listed at $9.99, coin and ticket packs run $0.99 to $9.99, and a Daily Bonus Revive costs $0.99 or $4.99, or one ad. Plus carries the old VIP's ad-free play, opens every playlist, allows 300 games at once and quadruples Daily Bonus rewards; Note Streaks are now Plus-only. Gameloft's help center quotes $99 a year for Plus and $39 for an annual ad-free plan, both bought through the SongPop app. Prices vary by region. A Plus plan bought in Classic covers Classic only.

Gameloft's Studio, a Mature 17+ Rating and the Data Collected

FreshPlanet, founded in New York in 2009, released SongPop 2 on iOS on July 16, 2015; Gameloft announced a deal to buy the studio on December 19, 2018. There were 13 iOS releases in 2026 through September, among them a Music City Club team event and a random-prize Mystery Box, and Apple's listing flags loot boxes. Google Play rates the game Mature 17+ for suggestive themes, drug references and strong language; Apple rates it 13+. The Data safety form lists approximate location, name, email, photos, in-app messages and purchase history, with device IDs shared for advertising; location comes from your IP address, not GPS. Since the late-August 2026 update, several English Play reviews report crashes and freezes on ads.

Pros

  • Five recorded clips per challenge, with answer speed deciding every point
  • Four party leagues keep level 1–5 beginners away from Platinum players
  • New playlists weekly, plus re-released lists every Wednesday and Saturday
  • Mastery races rank the top 100 players to reach 2,000 XP
  • Coins, Tickets and Daily Bonus rewards can all be earned without paying

Cons

  • Free play shows ads between matches; 65 of 150 most relevant English Play reviews object
  • Parties have needed a linked account in the separate SongPop app since 2023
  • Note Streaks and unlimited playlists sit behind the $9.99 SongPop Plus listing
  • Crash and freeze reports followed the late-August 2026 update

Verdict

We score it 7.3 because the core still works: five clips, four buttons, speed decides, and leagues, weekly playlists and mastery races supply long-term goals. Take it for music trivia duels with friends if ads between matches do not bother you. Skip it if you will not pay to remove ads, or if you want parties without installing and linking FreshPlanet's newer SongPop, which has its own live 1v1 rounds and daily Tuneology puzzle.

Gameplay8.0Five-clip duels scored on speed, four party leagues and 2,000-XP mastery races give the quiz real structure.
Controls8.0One tap on one of four large answer buttons; ad freezes reported since August 2026 break the rhythm.
Replay value8.5Weekly playlists, Wednesday and Saturday re-releases, 29 party genres and a 30-tier Monthly Pass keep goals coming.
Graphics & sound7.5Real recorded clips carry it; menus are flat cards, and Gameloft says labels block some songs and artists.
Monetisation5.0Ads between free matches, a $9.99 Plus listing, Plus-only Note Streaks and parties tied to a second app.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play SongPop Classic offline?

No offline mode is listed in either store or in Gameloft's help center. The help center describes each quiz being downloaded from the SongPop server, with the next one preloaded to cut waiting, and duels, parties and chat all involve other accounts. Practice Mode against the mascot Melody is solo, but it is not described as offline.

2

Is SongPop Plus worth it to remove ads in SongPop Classic?

Only if you play daily and want the extras. SongPop Plus is listed at $9.99 on the US App Store and adds every playlist, quadrupled Daily Bonus rewards and Note Streaks to ad-free play. For ad removal alone, Gameloft's help center describes a $39 annual ad-free plan bought through the SongPop app. Prices vary by region.

3

What do you need to run SongPop Classic?

Android 7.0 or later, or iOS 13 or later on iPhone and iPad; the App Store build also runs on Macs with macOS 10.10 and on Apple Vision. The download is roughly 250 MB on both stores. A Microsoft Store version exists, but Gameloft notes the companion SongPop app is not on Windows, which complicates party access there.

4

Can you play SongPop Classic with friends?

Yes. Challenges are turn-based, so a friend answers whenever they open the app, much like Words With Friends. You can also take random opponents or Best Match players with similar taste and message them in chat, while parties pit you against your league. Plus raises the cap to 300 simultaneous games; any profile can be blocked.

5

How long does a SongPop Classic game take?

A challenge is five short clips, and points reward answering within seconds; Gameloft's achievement tiers ask for correct answers in three seconds down to half a second. The long game is slower: mastering a playlist takes 2,000 XP, the Daily Bonus runs on a 28-day calendar, and the Monthly Pass has 30 reward tiers.
