Madden NFL Mobile Review: Play Calls and $99.99 Packs

Play Calling Is the Real Game

Each down opens a play menu split into run, pass and special teams, with a handful of cards to choose from and a play-art diagram on each. Once the ball is snapped the controls narrow to a stick and a receiver button, so the decision that matters happened before the snap. That structure suits a phone: it turns an intricate console simulation into a series of small choices, and it teaches the sport's basic logic — down, distance, field position — better than most sports games manage. The field view keeps the score, quarter, down and yardage across the top.

The Roster Is a Card Collection

My Team is a formation of player cards with overall ratings and team badges rather than a depth chart. Improving the side means acquiring better cards through events, packs and the store, and the home screen is built around that loop: an Opening Drive event, a competitive ladder, leagues and a shop, refreshed through the season. Apple's listing names loot boxes and frequent contests among the contents, which is an accurate description — the cards you want are distributed by chance and by competitive placement rather than sold outright.

$1.99 to $99.99, and a Rating Gap

Currency packs are listed from 200 units at $1.99 up to 12,000 at $99.99, with team bundles between $1.99 and $29.99. Google Play carries both an advertising badge and in-app purchases against 10 million installs and 4.5 stars from 259,000 reviews; the App Store shows 4.7 from 1.31 million ratings, a five-times larger sample on the platform where the NFL audience mostly sits. The install is 345.5 MB, the age rating 13+, and everything runs on EA's servers — there is no offline season to play through.

Verdict

Worth installing for the play-calling, which is a genuinely good translation of American football to a small screen and teaches the sport as you go. Everything around it is a card economy with loot boxes, weekly events and packs reaching $99.99. Fine as a free companion through the NFL season; frustrating if you expected a console franchise mode in your pocket.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play a season offline?

No. Every mode connects to EA's servers, including single-player events, so the game is unusable without a signal. There is no offline franchise or exhibition mode, which is the feature console Madden players most often go looking for here.

2

What does it sell?

In-game currency from $1.99 for 200 units to $99.99 for 12,000, plus team bundles between $1.99 and $29.99. The currency buys packs, and Apple lists loot boxes among the contents — the better player cards arrive by chance rather than by direct selection.

3

What does it need to run?

345.5 MB and iOS 13 or later, which covers most phones still in use. It is far lighter than the basketball equivalent in this catalogue, which needs nearly ten times the storage for a comparable licensed sports game.

4

Is there head-to-head play?

Yes, through a competitive ladder against other players' teams and through leagues, which group players for shared objectives and internal competitions. Matches are decided by roster strength as much as by play calling, so a free roster meets paid ones on uneven terms.

5

How long does a game take?

Event matches are cut to a few drives rather than four full quarters, so a session is minutes rather than an hour. The season structure rewards checking in daily for refreshed events, which is where the real time commitment accumulates.
