MLB 9 Innings Review: Licensed Baseball, Card Squads

Batting and Pitching, One Pitch at a Time

A plate appearance puts the strike zone on screen with a timing window for the swing; pitching reverses it, choosing pitch type and location before release. Both are decided in a second, which suits a phone far better than fielding does — the defence is largely automatic. Stadiums are modelled with crowd reactions, and named players carry their real photographs and ratings. Games can be simulated or played out, so a season is not a hundred and sixty-two full matches unless you want it to be.

The Roster Is a Card Collection

Players arrive as cards with overall ratings and grades, sorted into a lineup by position and tracked with a team value figure that summarises how strong the squad is. Live cards update through the real season, so a player having a good year improves in the game as well. Master League and season modes give the collection a purpose beyond ranking numbers, with a World Series championship as the stated goal. Apple names loot boxes among the contents, which is how the highest-grade cards are distributed.

1.7 GB, and Packages to $99.99

The install is 1.7 GB, and the App Store lists purchases from a $1.99 star pack up to a $99.99 package, with a monthly star bag at $9.99 in between — a recurring charge rather than a one-off. The age rating is 9+ with loot boxes, advertising and chat listed. The App Store average is 4.4 from 71,835 ratings, a far smaller sample than the football and basketball games here, which reflects how narrow the audience for a baseball simulator is outside the United States, Japan and Korea.

  • Apple lists loot boxes among the contents

Verdict

The only serious licensed baseball game on a phone, and the batting and pitching are good enough to carry it — pitch selection and swing timing are exactly the parts of the sport that fit a touchscreen. What surrounds them is the standard card economy with loot boxes, a monthly charge and packages to $99.99. Worth installing for a fan; the collection is optional if you simulate.

Gameplay7.5Batting and pitching translate cleanly; fielding is handled for you.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can it be played offline?

No. The roster, live card updates and season progress are all held on the server, so the game needs a connection. That is a real limitation for a sport whose games are long enough that people play them on aeroplanes.

2

What does it sell?

Star packs and bundles from $1.99 to $99.99, plus a monthly star bag at $9.99 that renews. The currency buys packs of player cards, and Apple lists loot boxes among the contents — the highest-grade players are drawn rather than bought outright.

3

How much space does it need?

1.7 GB and iOS 15 or later, which is heavy but well short of the 3.2 GB basketball equivalent in this catalogue. Stadium detail and player models account for most of it, and updates through the season add more.

4

Is there multiplayer?

Yes, through club play and ranked modes where your assembled squad faces another player's. As with every card-based sports game here, roster strength weighs at least as heavily as timing, so matches are shaped by collection depth.

5

How long is a game?

A played-out match runs considerably longer than the football or basketball equivalents, because baseball is a game of individual plate appearances. Simulating games is the intended shortcut for anyone playing a full season on a phone rather than a console.
