About Yatzy

Bluetile Games' Yatzy is a free dice game from a Barcelona studio that uses the American 13-box scorecard: three rolls a turn, 25 points for a full house, 50 for five of a kind and a 35-point bonus at 63. Solo, bot and Pass & Play games run offline, while online opponents, tournaments and team events need data. The catch is advertising, which 2026 reviewers say now breaks into games midway.

Yatzy Review: Classic Scoring Offline, Ads That Break Into the Game

13 Rounds, Three Rolls, and the Modes That Work Offline

Each game runs 13 rounds of five dice, with up to three rolls per turn and each scoring box used once. Despite the Scandinavian name, the scorecard in Bluetile's store screenshots is the American one: 25 for a full house, 30 and 40 for the straights, 50 for five of a kind and a 35-point bonus for reaching 63 in the upper section. Danish reviewers point out that One Pair and Two Pairs are missing. Tables seat up to three, and rivals can be a bot, a random online player or a friend sharing the phone in Pass & Play. Solo, bot and Pass & Play games work without Wi-Fi; online matches, tournaments and team events do not.

Bonus Rolls and Restart Turns: What the Dice Currency Buys

Dice, shown as a counter above the scorecard, is the currency spent on Bonus Rolls, which add a throw beyond the usual three, and on Restart Turns. A win in the store screenshots pays two Dice and 15 coins. More Dice come from watching ads, the daily Scratcher Card and Lucky Spin, or packs priced from $2.99 for a Handful of Dice to $22.99 for a Barrel on the US App Store. Coins mostly buy cosmetic dice faces, and reviewers since 2022 have complained that spins pay out mainly in coins. A Spanish reviewer argued that online matches lose their point when one side can throw more than three times. Bluetile answers rigged-dice complaints by saying rolls use a random, fair algorithm.

Mid-Game Ads, a $5.99 Remove Ads Pack and Items to $99.99

Both stores flag advertising, and Bluetile's published list of advertising partners names 27 companies, among them AppLovin, Google Ad Manager, Meta and Unity. Of the 150 newest English Google Play reviews (4 August to 1 October 2026), 28 gave one or two stars and 23 of those blamed ads: breaks in the middle of a game, a recurring boost pop-up, and ads that close the game and wipe the round. The US App Store sells Remove Ads for $5.99, yet two 2026 reviewers said ads continued after paying. Google Play lists items from $0.99 to $99.99, while Scopely's Yahtzee with Buddies reaches $189.99 and Ludo King $369.09 (US prices that vary by region and can change).

No Cloud Save, a New Owner, and What the Data Labels Say

Progress lives on the device. Reviewers who changed phones or reinstalled in 2025 and 2026 lost dice collections and paid items, and on 11 May 2026 Bluetile replied that a save-progress feature was still a priority. The studio began as Playvalve, a name kept in the package ID, and in March 2026 sold a 50% controlling stake to India's Nazara Technologies together with half of BestPlay, a Barcelona app that rewards time spent in mobile games. Bluetile's terms leave any real-world rewards to such third-party platforms and their own rules. Google Play's safety label says device IDs may be shared and data cannot be deleted, while the privacy policy lets players request deletion where the law allows.

Pros

  • American 13-box scorecard with a 35-point upper bonus at 63
  • Solo, bot and Pass & Play games run without a connection
  • Tables for two or three: bots, strangers or friends on one phone
  • Free Dice from wins, plus a daily Scratcher Card and Lucky Spin
  • Runs on Android 7.0, iOS 15, Apple M1 Macs and Apple Vision

Cons

  • Ads now interrupt games midway, and some close the app and erase the round
  • No cloud save: a new phone or reinstall loses progress and purchases
  • Bought Bonus Rolls let players exceed three throws in online matches
  • No online games with chosen friends, and no Scandinavian pair categories

Verdict

We score it 6.6: the 13-box scorecard is the familiar one and solo and Pass & Play games work offline, but ads now cut into games and paid Bonus Rolls bend the three-roll rule. Take it for quick solo rounds or a shared phone on a trip. Skip it if you want ad-free play, online games with chosen friends, Scandinavian pair scoring or progress that survives a new phone; Yahtzee with Buddies covers friend matches.

Gameplay7.0Familiar 13-round scoring and tables for up to three, but bought Bonus Rolls break the three-roll limit online.
Controls7.5Tap-to-hold dice and labelled scoring boxes suit small screens; event and boost pop-ups keep covering the board.
Replay value7.0Tournaments, team events and dice collections add goals, but progress has no cloud save or friend invites.
Graphics & sound8.0Bright, legible scorecard, collectible dice faces and optional sound, though the iPhone download nears 700 MB.
Monetisation4.5Ads now land inside games, the $5.99 Remove Ads pack draws complaints, and Play items reach $99.99.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play Yatzy offline?

Mostly, yes. Solo games, matches against the bot opponent and Pass & Play on one phone work without Wi-Fi, as offline players confirm in reviews. Online matches against random players, tournaments, team events and ad-based rewards such as free Bonus Rolls need a connection, and some reviewers report connection errors that block tournaments on working networks.

2

Is Yatzy pay to win?

Partly. Dice, the currency behind Bonus Rolls and Restart Turns, can be earned from wins and ads or bought in packs from $2.99 to $22.99 on the US App Store, so spending buys throws beyond the standard three. Coins mainly buy cosmetic dice faces. Google Play lists items up to $99.99, and prices vary by region and can change.

3

What does Yatzy need to run on a phone?

Android 7.0 or later, or iOS 15.0 or later. The iPhone download is close to 700 MB, against roughly 180 MB on Android. The App Store build also runs on Macs with an Apple M1 chip or newer and on Apple Vision, and Google Play lists it for Windows PCs through Google Play Games.

4

Can I play Yatzy with friends online?

Not with chosen friends. Online play pairs you with a random opponent, and friends can only share one phone in Pass & Play for two or three players. Teams exist for events, but a reviewer in September 2026 was still asking for friend requests. Yahtzee with Buddies and Ludo King both offer online matches with friends.

5

How long is a game of Yatzy?

Thirteen turns with up to three rolls each, plus ads, which 2026 reviewers say now land inside games, not only between them. Longer goals include levels that unlock dice faces, tournaments, team events, races and seasonal events such as the Starlight Festival on Google Play in October 2026.
