About Dominoes

NewPubCo's Dominoes is a one-on-one tile game with three rule sets — All Fives, Draw and Block — playable offline against computer opponents or online against strangers and invited friends. The rules are implemented straight, with move hints for All Fives beginners. The catch is the ad load: an interstitial between hands is the most repeated complaint in 2026 reviews, and Apple lists paid tiers from $3.99 a month to $69.99 Lifetime Access.

Dominoes Review: Faithful All Fives, Draw and Block, Buried Under Ads

All Fives, Draw and Block: what the free game gives you

All three rule sets are free. All Fives scores whenever the open ends of the line add up to a multiple of five, and the game offers move hints while you learn that arithmetic. Draw sends you to the boneyard when you cannot match, and the round winner banks the pips left in the opponent's hand. Block takes the boneyard away, so a player with no legal tile simply passes. The table keeps a round number and a live boneyard count in the corner, which makes the draw maths visible. Every match is one-on-one — the Play listing calls it a 2-player game — so anyone after the four-player partners format will not find it here. Computer opponents run with no connection at all; random matchmaking, the friend Lobby and tournaments need one.

The Lobby, Rematch and the question of who you are playing

Online play has two doors: random matchmaking and the Lobby, where you create a room and invite a friend for a private game with text chat and emoji reactions. Version 3.20.0 in June 2026 added a Rematch button and, by the developer's own changelog, fixed trouble starting matches with friends — a complaint that appears in reviews from 2024 onward. The weaker point is trust. Reviews in English, Spanish and Portuguese repeatedly claim that some opponents shown as live players are bots, and the listing does not explain how matchmaking fills empty seats; we could not confirm the claim either way. For comparison, Ludo King seats four people and adds pass-and-play on one device, while Yahtzee with Buddies runs as asynchronous duels with nothing offline.

$3.99 a month, $69.99 for life, and what the ads cost

Apple lists four Dominoes Premium items from $0.99 to $14.99, a $3.99 monthly and a $19.99 annual subscription, $69.99 Lifetime Access, and chip bundles at $0.99, $3.99 and $5.99 (US prices; regional and subject to change). Chips are virtual — the terms of use describe no cash-out — and Apple rates the game 13+ for contests, not gambling. What the store cannot show is the ad load: the dominant 2026 complaint is an interstitial after every hand, some reviewers lose matches when an ad freezes the table, and several annual subscribers report ads coming back. The game is sold by San Francisco publisher NewPubCo, while the terms and privacy policy belong to studio Loppi Poppi. Apple's label says location and usage data may be used to track you.

Pros

  • All Fives, Draw and Block rule sets, all free to play
  • Computer opponents work fully offline, with no wifi needed
  • All Fives move hints help beginners learn the multiples-of-five scoring
  • Friend Lobby with chat, plus a Rematch button added in 2026
  • Dominoes World adds a level path with boss opponents and boosters
  • Board themes and tile designs swap in from the Inventory

Cons

  • Reviewers report an interstitial ad after nearly every hand on the free tier
  • Paying subscribers report ads returning and waiting while opponents watch theirs
  • One-on-one only; the listing offers no four-player partners table
  • Google Play rates it Everyone, yet the privacy policy says users must be 16+

Verdict

We score it 6.7. The rules are right: All Fives, Draw and Block play as they should, computer opponents work offline, and the Lobby handles one-on-one games with a friend. The score drops on money, because the ad load between hands is the dominant complaint and even paying subscribers report it. Take it if you want classic two-player dominoes against the computer on a flight. Skip it if you want a four-player partners game, or if an ad after every hand will spoil the match for you.

Gameplay7.5Three standard rule sets scored correctly, but reviewers report matches lost when an ad freezes the table.
Controls7.5Portrait layout with boneyard and round counters on screen; tiles in hand cannot be rearranged, a request in recent reviews.
Replay value7.0Three modes, Dominoes World levels and tournaments, yet every match is strictly one-on-one.
Graphics & sound7.5Clean flat tiles on felt, wood, red and chalkboard tables, with cosmetic tile sets in the Inventory.
Monetisation4.5An ad after most hands per 2026 reviews, and paid tiers climbing to $69.99 Lifetime Access.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play Dominoes offline without wifi?

Yes, against the computer. The developer's listing states that AI matches need no internet or wifi connection, and the three rule sets — All Fives, Draw and Block — are available there. Random online opponents, the friend Lobby and tournaments need a connection. Accounts sign in with email, Google or Facebook; several reviewers report losing progress after switching phones, so link one before you do.

2

Do you have to pay to remove ads in Dominoes?

Yes. The free tier carries ads, and the developer's replies to reviews point players to an ad-free premium purchase. Apple lists a $3.99 monthly subscription, a $19.99 annual one and $69.99 Lifetime Access, plus chip bundles from $0.99 to $5.99 (US prices, subject to change). Chips are virtual and cannot be cashed out. Some subscribers report ads returning after paying.

3

What phone do I need to run Dominoes?

Android 9 or later, or iOS 15 or later. The iPhone download is close to 300 MB, and the same build runs on iPad, Apple-silicon Macs with macOS 12 and Apple Vision. The interface is English only. Reviewers on recent versions report freezes and restarts when an ad loads mid-match, so expect occasional interruptions on the free tier.

4

Can I play Dominoes with friends online?

Yes, one friend at a time. You create a Lobby, invite a friend and play a one-on-one match with text chat and emoji reactions; a Rematch button arrived in June 2026. There is no four-player partners table in the listing. Groups who want four seats at once are better served by Ludo King, which also has pass-and-play on a single device.

5

How much content is there beyond single matches?

More than the three modes suggest. Dominoes World, expanded in January 2026, adds a level path with boss opponents and boosters; the Golden Tile Booster arrived for All Fives in May 2026; tournaments and pre-match predictions run online. Version 3.18.1 introduced progressive unlocks, so some features open only as you play, and board themes and tile designs sit in the Inventory.
