About MONOPOLY GO!

Monopoly Go keeps the board and throws out the negotiation: you roll dice, collect rent, build landmarks, and raid other players' banks in short bursts. Dice are the limiting resource, and they regenerate slowly or arrive in a purchase. Scopely's version has passed 100 million Android installs, shows no advertising, and sells offers ranging from $1.99 to $99.99.

Monopoly Go Review: The Dice Are the Product

Rolls Regenerate, or You Buy Them

Every action costs a roll, and rolls refill on a timer rather than on demand. That single constraint sets the shape of the game: a session lasts as long as the stock of dice, then either ends or continues on a purchase. The store is built entirely around that moment — offers from $1.99 through $2.99, $3.99, $4.99, $5.99, $7.99, $9.99, $14.99 and $19.99 to a $99.99 bundle at the top. There is no advertising at all, which is unusual for a free board game and tells you where the revenue comes from instead. Prices are US listings.

Attack, Steal and the Community Chest

The multiplayer is asynchronous and mostly hostile. Landing on the right tile lets you send a wrecking ball at another player's landmark, knocking a building off their board, while a bank heist opens a grid of vaults to pick from for a large or small steal. Shields block incoming attacks if you have them stocked. Cooperative play exists in Community Chest events, where friends contribute to a shared pot. Chance cards pay out in the millions of in-game dollars, which keeps the numbers rising faster than any real Monopoly game ever did.

No Ads, but Apple Says It Tracks You

The absence of ads in the game does not mean the absence of advertising data. Apple's card states the app tracks users across other companies' apps and websites, using location, identifiers, usage data and diagnostics, and rates the title 9+. Google Play lists nine collected categories, with location and device identifiers shared with third parties. There is also no offline mode: the board is server-side, so a lost connection ends the session. For a game aimed partly at children, both facts are worth knowing before it goes on a family phone.

Pros

  • Sessions last two minutes, which suits a queue or a commute
  • No advertising interrupts play at any point
  • Board, landmarks and heists are readable within one round
  • Rated 4.8 on the App Store across 3.8 million ratings
  • Community Chest events give friends something cooperative

Cons

  • Dice run out, and refilling them is the main purchase
  • In-app offers run as high as $99.99
  • Apple states the app tracks you across other apps
  • No offline play: the board needs a live connection

Verdict

It is a well-made slot machine wearing a board game's clothes, and honest about the first part once you notice the dice timer. Two-minute sessions, no ads and bright presentation make it easy to keep on a phone. The reasons to be careful are the same ones that make it profitable: purchases that reach $99.99, timed events that reward returning, and cross-app tracking in a game rated 9+.

Gameplay7.5Rolling, building and raiding are satisfying, but there is no decision to make beyond tapping GO.
Controls8.5One button drives most of it; menus and heist grids are sized properly for a thumb.
Replay value7.0Events rotate constantly, though the loop underneath never changes between them.
Graphics & sound8.5Bright board art with landmarks that visibly grow; the wrecking ball lands with weight.
Monetisation4.5Dice as a limiter, event pressure, and offers climbing to $99.99 with no ads to offset.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play Monopoly Go offline?

No. The board, the events and every interaction with another player's town run on Scopely's servers, and Google Play does not tag the game as playable offline. Losing signal mid-session stops play, which matters because dice keep accumulating while you are away and the events run on real-world clocks.

2

Is Monopoly Go free?

Free to install, with no advertising at all. Money is spent on dice and event bundles, offered from $1.99 up to $99.99 for the largest package. Nothing is technically required — dice refill on their own — but every event is timed, so the purchase exists to buy progress before a deadline.

3

What phone does it need?

Modest hardware is fine: the install is small for a modern game and the board is simple to render, which is part of why it has passed 100 million Android installs. What it does need is a connection every session, so signal quality matters more here than processor speed.

4

Can you play with friends?

Yes, though mostly against them. Friends appear as boards you can raid or attack, and their names show up in event leaderboards. The cooperative side is Community Chest events, where a group contributes to a shared reward. There is no shared live game the way a physical board works.

5

How long is a session?

As long as your dice last — usually two to five minutes, several times a day, since rolls refill on a timer. Events change that: while one runs, the game rewards returning every few hours. That rhythm is deliberate, and it is the main thing to weigh before installing it for a child.
