Call of Duty Mobile Review: 2.8 GB and an 18+ Rating

Two Games Inside One 2.8 GB Download

The multiplayer half is 5v5 on maps lifted from the series — Nuketown, Raid, Standoff — across team deathmatch, domination and kill-confirmed, in rounds short enough to fit a bus ride. The battle royale half drops a hundred players onto a far larger map, alone, in pairs or in fours, with vehicles and class abilities that the multiplayer modes do not have. Zombies and sniper-only duels rotate alongside them. Installing both costs 2.8 GB, and a phone runs warm holding the frame rate: this is a game that leans on hardware rather than accommodating it.

The Screen Is Mostly Buttons

A left stick, a fire button under the right thumb, a minimap in the corner and a column of ability and equipment buttons down the right edge — the layout is dense, adjustable, and still the weakest part of playing a shooter this fast on glass. Seasons keep the content moving: new maps, modes and a battle pass on a schedule, with the most recent store update landing on 23 June 2026. The gunplay itself is faithful enough that the muscle memory transfers from the console games, which is the whole argument for it existing.

Points to $99.99, Loot Boxes and an Advertising Badge

The currency packs climb from $0.99 to $99.99 with $24.99 and $49.99 steps between, plus bundles such as a $10.99 forces pack. Apple lists loot boxes, advertising and messaging among the contents and rates the game 18+ for frequent realistic violence — the strictest age rating in this catalogue. Google Play carries a Contains ads badge on a game that also runs a currency store, and its average is 4.3 from 16.6 million reviews against Apple's 4.7 from 2 million ratings. That gap of nearly half a point between platforms is the largest among the shooters here.

Pros

  • Multiplayer and battle royale in one free download
  • Maps rebuilt from the console games, including Nuketown
  • Rounds short enough for a single commute
  • Seasons add maps and modes on a schedule
  • Rated 4.7 on the App Store across 2 million ratings

Cons

  • A 2.8 GB install that heats phones under load
  • Loot boxes and advertising both listed by Apple
  • Currency packs reach $99.99 a purchase
  • Rated 4.3 on Play, well below its Apple average

Verdict

The most complete shooter available free on a phone, with two modes that would each justify the download and gunplay faithful enough that console habits transfer. What holds it back is everything around the shooting: a touch layout that cannot match a controller, loot boxes, an advertising badge and packs reaching $99.99. Worth the 2.8 GB if you have the storage and the self-control.

Gameplay8.5Console-grade shooting with two distinct modes that would each stand alone.
Controls7.0A crowded touch layout doing work that a thumbstick does better.
Replay value8.5Seasonal maps, ranked ladders and two separate modes to grind through.
Graphics & sound8.5The best-looking shooter here, at the cost of heat and battery.
Monetisation6.0Loot boxes, advertising and packs to $99.99 in one free game.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can it be played offline?

No. Every mode is played against other people on live servers, so a stable connection is mandatory and a dropped one costs the match. There is no practice range or single-player campaign to fall back on when the signal goes, which rules it out for underground commuting.

2

What does it sell?

In-game points, sold from $0.99 up to $99.99 per pack, spent on battle passes, weapon blueprints and cosmetic bundles. Apple's listing also names loot boxes among the contents, which means some purchases produce a random result rather than a chosen item.

3

What hardware does it need?

2.8 GB of storage and iOS 15 or later on iPhone, plus enough processing headroom to hold a frame rate in a firefight. It scales settings down for older Android phones, but battery drain and heat are noticeable on anything mid-range during a long session.

4

Can you play with friends?

Yes. Battle royale supports duos and four-player squads with voice chat, and multiplayer lobbies can be joined as a party. Ranked play tracks each account separately, so a squad of mixed skill will be matched against the strongest member's bracket.

5

How long is a session?

A multiplayer round is short enough to finish in a queue; a battle royale match runs considerably longer, because it ends only when one player or squad is left. The mode you pick effectively decides whether the game fits a five-minute gap or needs a proper sitting.
