About Yahtzee® with Buddies Dice

The licensed Yahtzee: five dice, three rolls a turn, thirteen boxes to fill and a 35-point bonus for scoring 63 in the upper section. Matches are asynchronous duels against friends. Bonus rolls — extra chances at a score — are sold from $2.99 to $49.99, which is the part worth thinking about in a game decided by probability.

Yahtzee with Buddies Review: Extra Rolls Cost $2.99

The Scorecard Is Unchanged

Three rolls per turn, dice held between rolls, and thirteen boxes to fill: ones through sixes upstairs, then three of a kind, four of a kind, a 25-point full house, a 30-point small straight, a large straight, 50 for a Yahtzee and a chance box. Score 63 or more in the upper section and a 35-point bonus lands, which is the arithmetic every player eventually learns to chase. The app tracks both scorecards side by side during a duel, so you always know what the other player needs and what you can afford to sacrifice.

Duels Are Asynchronous

Matches against friends do not require both people at once — you take your turns, they take theirs, and the game notifies you when it is your move again, exactly like a correspondence board game. Multipliers appear as tokens that double or quadruple a box's value, which introduces a decision the paper game never had: where to spend the 3x before it expires. Dice World collects the alternative modes — timed tournaments, elimination formats, treasure hunts — for anyone who wants something faster than a turn a day.

Bonus Rolls Are the Business Model

A bonus roll gives a fourth attempt at a turn, and in a dice game that is a direct purchase of luck. The App Store lists them from $2.99 for a scoop to $49.99 for a barrel, with combo packs at $4.99, $9.99 and $19.99 and a Prize Pass at $7.99. Google Play adds an advertising badge against 10 million installs and 4.5 stars from 298,000 reviews; Apple matches that 4.5 across 261,000 ratings and rates the app 9+, listing infrequent mature themes, advertising, chat and user-generated content. The install is 329.2 MB.

Pros

  • The full Yahtzee scorecard, faithfully implemented
  • Duels play out asynchronously with notifications
  • Multiplier tokens add a decision to each turn
  • Custom dice collection as a cosmetic layer
  • Rated 4.5 on both stores across 559,000 ratings

Cons

  • Bonus rolls sell extra chances at a score
  • Roll packs climb to $49.99 a purchase
  • Advertising appears between matches on the free tier
  • Apple lists infrequent mature or suggestive themes

Verdict

A faithful Yahtzee with the one feature the paper game lacks — a duel you can play a turn at a time over several days with someone in another city. The problem is the bonus rolls: in a game decided by probability, selling extra rolls sells outcomes, and the packs run to $49.99. Fine between friends who both ignore the shop.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can it be played offline?

No. Even solo play routes through the servers for scoring, events and the social layer, so the game needs a connection. That is a strange limitation for dice, which is the one thing a phone could simulate entirely on its own.

2

What do bonus rolls do?

They grant an extra roll beyond the standard three, which means an additional chance to complete a scoring combination. Packs run from $2.99 to $49.99. Since Yahtzee is a game of probability, buying rolls buys a measurably better expected score — not just convenience.

3

What does it need to run?

329.2 MB and iOS 13 or later, which covers phones from around 2015 onward. The size comes from animations, events and the cosmetic dice collection rather than from anything the dice themselves require.

4

Can you play with friends?

Yes, and asynchronously — the mode the app is named for. Each player takes turns whenever they open the game, with notifications when it is your move, so a duel between two busy people can run over several days without either waiting.

5

How long is a game?

A full thirteen-turn scorecard takes about five minutes if both players are present, or days if you are playing asynchronously a turn at a time. The event modes in Dice World are shorter and designed for a single sitting.
