HYKE: Northern Light(s) is Akatsuki's top-down pixel-art action RPG on Apple Arcade — a camping witch named Hyke crossing a war-scarred world in her van to find her mother, fighting through forbidden zones with seven playable witches, cooking buffs at the campfire between stages — on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Vision since April 2, 2026, with no purchases and no ads. It rates 4.4 from 105 ratings for the art, the music and a Zenonia-era feel; the complaints are launch bugs and no tutorial.
Specs come from the official store listings and were last checked on 2026-09-21. Developers change pricing and requirements — check the store page before installing.
The setup is a road trip through a ruined world: a decade after the war that killed Aurora, the strongest witch, Hyke sets out in her beloved vehicle to find her missing mother and runs into the Meteos, witches with special powers, and the threat they are fighting. Stages are forbidden zones full of magic, played top-down with a stick and skill buttons across seven characters with distinct kits; between them you rest at camp, sort gear, decorate the site and cook meals for buffs on the next stage. Version 1.1.0 on June 30, 2026 added post-game scenarios, tag-team stages where an AI partner fights beside you, new bosses, friendship skills and a second campsite. An April 4 five-star calls the blend of cozy exploration and engaging combat stunning and the atmosphere calm yet emotional; an April 3 review says it recalls the 2D Korean hack-and-slash games of the 2010s like Zenonia.
The length is the first caveat: a May 22 five-star finished the game in three days and loved it, then asked for gem trading because 38 white gems sat unused after Hyke's upgrades were maxed. Combat readability is the second: a May 24 four-star finds boss fights too busy to track the boss, even in the easier adventure mode, and gets kicked out mid-fight. The one-stars are technical and specific: an April 12 iPad owner found it unplayably laggy through the tutorial with no asset-download screen to explain it; a July 5 review says it does not load at all on an iPhone 13 Pro; a July 25 review had no on-screen controls on iPhone. An August 27 one-star from outside the genre found no tutorial and no way in, and a May 2 four-star found the help written only for controller and keyboard.
There is nothing to buy. HYKE is an Apple Arcade title, so it comes with the subscription and carries no in-app purchases, no advertising and no tracking on its App Store page; the price of entry is Arcade itself, which also covers the Mac and Apple Vision versions listed alongside iPhone and iPad. Akatsuki, the Tokyo studio behind it, sells a separate PC version on Steam, and the July 3 reviewer calls this their favourite game on Arcade. There is no Android version. The reviews carry no complaints about monetisation because there is none to complain about — the gem-trading request is about a currency earned in-game, not bought. What the subscription model does cost is permanence: an Arcade game plays only while you subscribe, and titles can leave the service. The July update stands as the last content addition as of September 2026.

A 7.3: a lovely, short pixel action RPG with a campfire at its heart and nothing to sell you, on a subscription that hides the price and a launch that left some phones lagging or locked out. Take it if you have Apple Arcade and miss the Zenonia era, ideally with a controller. Skip it if you want a long campaign, a tutorial for the genre, or a game you own outright — and there is no Android version to consider.
Yes — as with Apple Arcade games generally, it runs offline once downloaded, and the story and camp are single-player; only the global score-attack leaderboards need a connection. Download the 2.31 GB build on Wi-Fi, and note that Arcade periodically checks your subscription when you are online.
It is included with Apple Arcade, so there is no separate price, no in-app purchases and no ads; the App Store page lists no tracking either. Without an Arcade subscription it cannot be played on Apple devices — the alternative is Akatsuki's paid PC version on Steam. Arcade pricing varies by region.
An iPhone or iPad on iOS 13 or later with 2.31 GB free, a Mac on macOS 12, or Apple Vision — and an Apple Arcade subscription. The floor is low but the reviews are mixed on hardware: an iPad owner reported unplayable lag and a July 2026 review could not load it on an iPhone 13 Pro. A Backbone controller works. There is no Android version.
Not together. It is a single-player game; the tag-team stages added in July 2026 pair you with an AI-controlled second witch, not another player. The only shared feature is the score-attack leaderboard, where every stage ranks players worldwide.
Short: a May 2026 reviewer finished the story in three days, and another asks how to beat it after weeks, so expect roughly eight to fifteen hours depending on the difficulty mode. The July update added post-game scenarios for anyone who has cleared the main story, plus new bosses, and score attack on every stage extends it for the competitive.
