Zenless Zone Zero Review: Fast Combat, 3.5 on Play

Combat Is the Entire Argument

Three characters form a squad, and the game is built on swapping between them mid-combo: a perfect dodge slows time, an assist swap brings the next character in with a counter, and chain attacks fire when an enemy's stagger bar breaks. It is faster and more demanding than anything else its studio makes, closer to a console action game than to a menu-driven role-playing one. Encounters are short, self-contained and repeatable, which suits a phone far better than a forty-minute dungeon would. Difficulty scales through enemy behaviour rather than inflated health, so a well-timed fight ends quickly.

A City Instead of a Continent

The setting is urban and stylised — arcades, ramen shops, video-store aesthetics — with the story delivered through comic-panel cutscenes rather than long walking sections. Between missions you run a shop in a district that acts as the hub, which keeps the pacing tight: the game rarely asks you to cross a landscape to reach the next fight. That structure is the main reason it plays well in short sessions, and the reason people who wanted an open world were disappointed. Loading between districts is short, which keeps a twenty-minute session from becoming ten minutes of walking.

3.5 on Play, 4.1 on Apple

Both figures are the weakest among its studio's games, and the reviews point at the same things: the pace of new content, banner rates and the hub sections that separate the fights. The App Store lists currency from $0.99 to $99.99, a $4.99 monthly membership, and packs at $9.99 and $14.99, with loot boxes named among the contents at a 13+ rating. The install is 3.7 GB, there is no advertising, and the last Play update recorded is 16 July 2026. For a studio whose other titles sit near the top of their genres, that gap is the story of this game so far.

Pros

  • Character swapping mid-combo is genuinely skilful
  • Perfect dodges and assists reward timing, not spending
  • Encounters are short, self-contained and repeatable
  • No advertising anywhere in the game
  • Distinct urban art direction with comic-style cutscenes

Cons

  • Rated 3.5 on Play, the lowest of its studio's games
  • A 3.7 GB install before updates
  • Apple lists loot boxes among the contents
  • Hub sections slow the pace between fights

Verdict

The best action combat on a phone, and worth installing for that alone: swapping mid-combo with perfect dodges is a real skill rather than a stat check. What drags the ratings down is everything around the fighting — hub pacing, content cadence and the usual banner economy. Play it for the combat, on a phone that can hold the frame rate.

Gameplay8.5The most demanding action combat on a phone, with real timing windows.
Controls7.5Dodge, swap and attack on a touchscreen — workable, and a controller is better.
Replay value7.5Combat depth carries it; content arrives more slowly than players want.
Graphics & sound9.0Striking urban art and animation that stand apart from its fantasy rivals.
Monetisation4.5Loot boxes, a monthly membership and currency reaching $99.99.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can it be played offline?

No. The game runs against the server even in single-player, so combat and story both need a connection. The account syncs with computer and console versions, which is the compensation for that requirement.

2

What does it sell?

Currency from $0.99 to $99.99 for character banners, a $4.99 monthly membership and growth packs at $9.99 and $14.99. Apple lists loot boxes among the contents. The campaign itself is free, as in every game from this studio.

3

How much space does it need?

3.7 GB and iOS 14 or later, and it is demanding while running — the combat holds a high frame rate when it can, which shows in heat and battery on a phone that is a few years old.

4

Is there multiplayer?

No. This is single-player throughout, with no co-op mode and no shared world. Friends appear only through support characters and social features around the edges, which is consistent with its studio's other games.

5

How long is a session?

Fights run a few minutes each and daily activities take about twenty, capped by a stamina currency. It suits short sessions better than the open-world alternatives, provided you are willing to sit through the hub sections between missions.
