AFK Journey Review: The Battles Fight Themselves

Placement, Not Play

A stage is set up rather than played: five heroes are positioned on a grid, formations matter because ranged units behind a wall of tanks survive longer, and the fight then resolves on its own. Losing means changing the arrangement or the roster instead of trying again more carefully. Rewards accumulate offline, so the game explicitly does not want your attention for hours — a few minutes to collect, adjust and set the next objective is the intended session, which is a rarer honesty in this genre than it should be.

A World That Rewards Wandering

Unusually for an idle game, there is an actual overworld to walk around, with puzzles, hidden chests and small quests between the battle stages. That gives the collection somewhere to go beyond a stage counter. Seasonal collaborations bring outside casts into the roster — a well-known monster-collecting franchise runs across the current store screens — and each season resets some progression, which the community argues about at length every time it happens. Chests and puzzles are placed densely enough that walking between stages is worth doing rather than skipping, which is the opposite of how most idle games treat their maps.

1.3 GB, and the Ratings Hold Up

The install is 1.3 GB, which is light next to the action gachas in this catalogue, and the App Store lists purchases across the full ladder from $0.99 to $99.99. Apple rates the game 13+, listing loot boxes, chat and user-generated content. The ratings are the strongest in this package — 4.5 stars from 300,000 Google Play reviews on 5 million installs, and 4.8 from 74,000 App Store ratings — which for an idle game with seasonal resets suggests the resets are handled better than the arguments imply.

Pros

  • Battles resolve without needing your attention
  • Rewards accumulate while the app is closed
  • A real overworld with puzzles and chests
  • A 1.3 GB install, light for the genre
  • Rated 4.8 on the App Store across 74,000 ratings

Cons

  • Seasons reset part of the progression
  • Apple lists loot boxes among the contents
  • Purchases run the full ladder to $99.99
  • Combat cannot be influenced once it starts

Verdict

The idle game done properly: rewards accumulate while you live your life, formations matter more than execution, and an actual overworld gives the roster somewhere to go. Seasonal resets are the recurring argument, and loot boxes are the economy. If you want progress without a daily obligation, this is the strongest option here — and the App Store's 4.8 across 74,000 ratings suggests its audience agrees.

Frequently asked questions

1

Does it work offline?

The rewards accumulate while the app is closed, which is the point of the genre, but the game itself needs a connection to open and collect them. Progress happens without you rather than without the internet.

2

What does it sell?

Currency and hero material across the full range from $0.99 to $99.99, plus seasonal passes. Apple lists loot boxes, so heroes arrive by chance. Free accumulation is generous enough that progress continues steadily without paying, which is not true of every idle game.

3

How much space does it need?

1.3 GB and iOS 11 or later — light for this catalogue and undemanding to run, because the battles are resolved rather than rendered at speed. It works comfortably on older phones.

4

Is there anything social?

Guilds pool contributions toward shared bosses and events, and formations can be compared against other players' arrangements. Nobody plays a battle together, since battles play themselves — the social layer is about advice and competition on the same stages.

5

How long is a session?

Five to ten minutes: collect what accumulated, adjust a formation, push a stage or two, set the next objective. The design actively discourages long sessions, which makes it the least demanding role-playing game in this catalogue.
