About Aniimo

Aniimo is Pawprint Studio's free creature-catching open-world RPG: you catch Aniimo with Aniipods, hatch them from eggs, and Twine — merge with one to use its abilities — across the wilds of Idyll and the city of Astra. One Aniimo Pass account shares progress between phone, PC and consoles on the same server. The catch: the hardware check runs after the in-game download, and many mid-range Android phones are refused.

Aniimo Review: A Creature Collector Without Banners, If Your Phone Passes

Aniipods, Eggs and Twine: How the Catching Loop Works

You find creatures roaming Idyll and throw an Aniipod, or earn them in Alpha and Omega battles and at activated Bloom spots. Eggs come in rarities, and choosing an Aniipod during hatching turns the result into a guaranteed shiny, PC Gamer's Jessica Orr explained on September 16. Twine is the signature system: you merge with a caught creature and use its movement and abilities to reach places your character cannot. Legendaries come from collecting unique tokens, finishing that Legendary's story and a guaranteed special-Aniipod capture — the final beta's Rift Exploration, which worked like a banner with pity, was replaced by those tokens before launch. Between trips, an RV serves as home, where Destructoid's 8/10 review found you grow crops and assign creatures to gather resources. Launch players get a Rare Prismana Aniimo at Grade I Wayfarer and four free outfits.

18 GB Free, Then a Device Check on Your Phone

The store pages ask for little — iOS 15 or Android 7 — and the Android installer is only 375 MB, because the game pulls the rest of its data in-app; Pawprint's launch post asks for 18 GB of free space, Wi-Fi, and a check of the minimum requirements before downloading. We read 600 recent Google Play reviews in English, Portuguese, Spanish and Indonesian: 29 describe the game refusing the device after the resource download finished, and 53 mention lag or stutter. The sample split 277 one-star against 221 five-star, and the dividing line is the phone. Progress is shared across platforms inside one server — Americas, APAC or Europe; flagship owners in the reviews use the phone as a companion to a PC save. On PC, Steam's floor is a GTX 970, 8 GB of RAM and 40 GB of storage.

$4.99 Pass, $9.99 and $19.99 Handbooks: Where the Money Goes

No creature banner exists at launch: creatures come from catching, eggs, events and the handbook, never from a random draw. The money goes into Lumin Crystals, which run from 60 for $0.99 to 6,480 for $99.99 on the App Store and buy outfits and shop bundles. The Monthly Pass costs $4.99. The Companion Handbook battle pass has a free track plus two paid ones, Advanced at $9.99 and Collector's at $19.99, and the paid tracks include creatures, cosmetics and level skips. Since launch, Steam reviewers complain about the energy system tied to Glimmer and about a randomized outfit draw with a pity counter. Apple's privacy label lists identifiers used to track you across other companies' apps, plus phone number and gameplay content linked to your identity. Prices are regional and may change.

Pros

  • No random draws for creatures: catch, hatch or unlock them
  • Twine merges you with a caught creature to use its abilities
  • Choosing an Aniipod at hatching guarantees a shiny from that egg
  • One Aniimo Pass account shares progress across phone, PC and consoles
  • Launch gift: a Rare Prismana Aniimo and four free outfits

Cons

  • Weaker phones are refused only after the in-game resource download
  • Paid Handbook tracks at $9.99 and $19.99 hold creatures free players miss
  • Lag and stutter lead the Play complaints; menus are crowded
  • No AI-content disclosure on Steam while players dispute AI-made art

Verdict

A 7.0: Aniimo gets the core right — no creature sits behind a random draw, and Twine makes exploring as your creature feel new — then sells passes and outfits and hides a strict hardware check behind a large download. Take it on a recent flagship, or alongside a PC save. Skip it on a mid-range Android phone, or if a $19.99 handbook tier bothers you; Pokémon GO remains the phone-first alternative.

Gameplay8.0Aniipod catching, shiny hatching, Twine traversal and token-based Legendaries make collecting the point, not a chore.
Controls6.0Menus stack currencies, handbooks and collection screens, and fights stutter on mid-range phones.
Replay value8.0Shiny hunting, eggs, Legendary token quests and handbook seasons — paced by energy caps rather than content.
Graphics & sound7.0Creature designs and landscapes impress on flagships; weaker phones stutter, and players dispute undisclosed AI art.
Monetisation6.0No creature banners, but a $4.99 pass, $19.99 handbook tier and $99.99 crystal packs add up.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play Aniimo offline?

No. It is an online game: Steam lists a broadband connection among its minimum requirements, and your progress lives on one of three servers — Americas, APAC or Europe. The phone version also downloads most of its data in-app, so Pawprint asks for Wi-Fi and 18 GB of free space before you start.

2

Is Aniimo free to play?

Yes, it is free on the App Store, Google Play and Steam. You pay only if you want the $4.99 Monthly Pass, a Companion Handbook track at $9.99 or $19.99, or Lumin Crystals from $0.99 to $99.99 for outfits and bundles. There are no creature banners at launch. Prices vary by region.

3

Will Aniimo run on my phone?

Only if it passes the game's own check. The listings say iOS 15 or Android 7, but the game tests your hardware after the resource download, and Play reviewers with mid-range Android phones report being refused at that point. Free 18 GB, use Wi-Fi, and check Pawprint's minimum requirements first; on PC, Steam's floor is a GTX 970.

4

Can you play Aniimo with friends?

Yes. Steam lists online co-op, online PvP and cross-platform multiplayer, and the sky city is where you meet other Pathfinders. Friends need to pick the same server — Americas, APAC or Europe — because Pawprint keeps data on different servers separate, while progress is shared across platforms inside one server.

5

How long does Aniimo take to finish?

It has no fixed end: this is a live-service game with a main story, Legendary quests unlocked by tokens, battle-pass seasons and 64 Steam achievements. Steam already shows reviewers with more than 100 hours logged two weeks after the PC launch, and in the late game the energy system, not a lack of content, sets the pace.
