About The Sims FreePlay

The Sims FreePlay needs a network connection every time you open it; neither store lists an offline mode. Past that condition it is a whole Sims life simulator from Electronic Arts: up to 34 Sims in one town, careers, pets, and ageing from toddler to senior, all paced by real-time timers rather than an energy bar. The catch arrived in August 2026 — a Season Pass whose Premium track puts build items behind payment.

The Sims FreePlay Review: The Wall Is Time, Not Money, Until the Pass

A Snack Takes 20 Seconds, a Night's Sleep Takes Seven Hours

Every action has a real-world duration. When the game launched in December 2011, Gamezebo timed a snack at 20 seconds and a deep sleep at seven hours, and that is still the loop: queue actions, close the app, come back later. Two things shorten the wait — Life Points, the premium currency, or a rewarded video ad, which EA's April 2026 patch notes describe as a way to skip an Action. Nothing else does; a January 2026 Play review complains that only certain quests offer a one-minute skip. Progress is measured in levels, town value and headcount, with a cap of 34 Sims per town. Careers run through workplaces you can walk into, such as the Police Station, Movie Studio and Hospital, and hobbies from cooking to salsa dancing level slowly enough that one long-term player reports a 3% gain per attempt at fashion design.

Season Pass: 60 Tiers, Two Tracks and a Daily Checklist

The pass arrived with the Tale of Knights update on August 25, 2026, and EA says every future update will carry one. Daily Tasks and Season Tasks earn Season Pass Points, which climb 60 tiers; this replaced the weekly streak. The free track pays out Life Points, Social Points, Simoleons, Mystery Box Keys and Cupcakes. The Premium track holds the furniture — Castle Gatehouse, Bella D'Arc Statue, Archery Target — and the Ivory Keep at the final tier. EA's announcement does not print the Premium price; check it in the app, as it varies by region. Reception was poor: The Sims Resource and SimsCommunity reported enough complaints on the r/simsfreeplay subreddit that moderators opened a megathread, with house templates behind the paid track the main grievance. It sits on top of the existing calendar: eleven timed events between August 25 and October 12, including 9-day SimChase rounds and 10-day Craft Challenges.

Online-Only, 1.8 GB, and a Publisher That Has Pulled the Plug Before

Both store pages state that a network connection is required to play, and the Play listing adds that EA may retire online features after 30 days' notice. The Sims Mobile, EA's other phone Sims, went dark on January 20, 2026, and in 2018 FreePlay itself was withdrawn from China, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar and Egypt "in light of regional standards". Storage is 1.8 GB on Android and 2.6 GB on iPhone. The legal seller on Play is Electronic Arts Nederland B.V.; Apple's privacy label lists Purchases, Identifiers, Usage Data and Diagnostics as data used to track you across other companies' apps, and Google's data-safety card says Location and Device IDs may be shared with third parties. Apple also flags Loot Boxes, Google flags random items, and the in-app shop runs from $0.99 to $99.99 per item across Simoleons, Life Points and Social Points.

Pros

  • Careers you can follow into the Police Station, Movie Studio and Hospital
  • Up to 34 Sims in one town, all yours to dress and house
  • Timers can be skipped with a rewarded ad, not only with paid Life Points
  • Eleven timed events scheduled across seven weeks in the current update
  • Still updated in 2026 while The Sims Mobile shut down in January

Cons

  • A network connection is required for every session, even solo play
  • Three paid currencies run to $99.99, plus loot boxes and ads
  • The August 2026 Premium Pass locks build items and templates behind payment
  • Needs 1.8 GB on Android and 2.6 GB on iPhone before you start

Verdict

A strong life sim held back by its business model: careers, families and a 34-Sim town cost nothing but time, while Life Points, loot boxes, ads and the Premium Pass sit on top. Take it if you want a Sims game on a phone and accept a real-time clock — it is EA's only one since The Sims Mobile closed in January 2026. Skip it if you play offline, if 1.8–2.6 GB is too much, or if you want Sims without a shop: that is The Sims 4 on PC, or Avatar World for kids.

Gameplay8.0Careers, pets, families and a 34-Sim town with no energy bar; real-time timers set the pace instead.
Controls7.0Tap-to-act works, but the August 2026 update piled icons on screen and Build Mode Search reached only a test group.
Replay value8.0Eleven timed events in seven weeks plus a running story arc; hobbies level at about 3% per attempt.
Graphics & sound8.0Full 3D Sims and homes, with Enhanced Lighting added for Pixel 10 phones in April 2026.
Monetisation5.0Three paid currencies to $99.99, loot boxes flagged by Apple, ads, VIP tiers and a Premium Pass since August 2026.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play The Sims FreePlay offline?

No. Both the App Store and Google Play listings state that a network connection is required to play, and there is no offline mode to switch on. EA's Play listing also reserves the right to retire online features after 30 days' notice, which is what happened to The Sims Mobile in January 2026. Plan on Wi-Fi or mobile data for every session, including build mode.

2

Is The Sims FreePlay pay to win?

There is nobody to beat, so paying buys speed and decor rather than victory. Life Points skip real-time timers, Simoleons and Social Points buy furniture and outfits, and packs run from $0.99 to $99.99 per item. Since August 2026 a Premium Pass also locks items such as the Ivory Keep behind payment, and Apple's listing flags loot boxes. The free track of the same pass still pays out currencies and keys. Prices vary by region.

3

What phone do you need for The Sims FreePlay?

Android 7.0 or newer, or iOS 15.0 or newer, with room to spare: the Play listing asks for 1.8 GB of storage and the App Store version is 2.6 GB. Newer hardware gets extras — EA added Enhanced Lighting for the Pixel 10, 10 Pro and 10 Pro XL in April 2026. On an older phone the download itself is the first hurdle, not the game.

4

Can you play The Sims FreePlay with friends?

Not in the same town at the same time. Friends are neighbours: you visit their SimTowns, compare houses and form relationships between Sims, and Google flags the game with a Users Interact label because of it. On iOS, Game Center handles achievements. Timed events such as Influence Island pit you against a computer-controlled rival Sim, not other players, so there is no real-time co-op or shared building.

5

How much time does The Sims FreePlay take each day?

Several short check-ins rather than one long sitting. Actions run in real time — a night's sleep takes about seven hours of your clock — so the rhythm is queue, leave, return. Since August 2026 the Season Pass adds Daily Tasks and longer Season Tasks that expect a visit every day, and events run on fixed windows: SimChase rounds last 9 days, Craft Challenges 10, hobby events 7.
