About Tomb Busters

Tomb Busters is a four-player horror extraction game — loot a cursed ruin, get out before one of 20-plus folklore monsters ends the run — that Giant Games launched in the West on May 27, 2026 after 200 million downloads in China, with PC cross-play and proximity voice chat. It is free, 1 GB on iPhone, on iOS 13 or Android 9. The catch is the economy: dying costs your gear, and September 2026 reviews call buying it back pricey and matchmaking thin.

Tomb Busters Review: Lethal Company for Phones, With a Bill for Dying

Four Busters, One Cursed Ruin, Extract or Lose Everything

The loop is the extraction genre's: drop in solo or as a squad of up to four employees of the Supernatural Company, loot relics from an ancient Eastern ruin, and leave before the monsters or the traps finish you — go deeper for rarer relics, push too far and the run is lost. Roles are Explorer, Supporter and Fighter, tools split into exploration, attack and support items, and proximity voice chat is built in. The monsters are the hook: more than 20 creatures from folklore with their own origin, skill and weakness — a Ghost Bride who hunts one player and is visible only to that player, a Puppet that copies a teammate's voice, the Queen of Jingjue — and some can be captured alive. Giant Games says the Chinese release reached 200 million downloads and 10 million daily players before the May 27, 2026 Western launch; the US Play listing shows 100,000 installs and 1,890 reviews at 4.4, with 945 App Store ratings at 4.6.

Cross-Play With PC, 100-Hour Players, and Lobbies That Stay Empty

The mobile build is the same game as the PC version with full cross-play, which matters because the genre lives on population. The early reviews split on exactly that. A June 22, 2026 Play review with 16 helpful votes reports more than 100 hours and calls the high-rank dungeons impossible to clear alone — the loot does not cover a solo extraction — which is the intended pressure toward a squad. A September 15 review makes the opposite complaint: with random matchmaking almost nobody joins, so the reviewer plays only with known friends, and the levels are too hard for that. Giant Games replied the next day that death costs, pet usefulness and matchmaking are all under review. A May 27 launch-day review with five stars still hit a progression bug at level 16 of the season track. Version 1.32.27 arrived on September 16, 2026; the player count is the open question.

Aurion to $49.99, Mystic Boxes, a VIP Tier and Gear That Dies With You

Money enters at death. Gear lost on a failed run has to be bought back, and the September 2026 review calls that pricey; Google Play prices items from $0.99 to $99.99, and the App Store ladder shows Aurion currency from 60 for $0.99 to 3,330 for $49.99, a Deluxe Mystic Box at $11.99, an Exalted Mystic Box at $21.99 and a Luxury VIP tier at $9.99 — Apple flags Loot Boxes, and the boxes are the loot boxes. The same reviewer bought a pet with real money and found it useless against monsters, a complaint the studio acknowledged. Neither store shows an advertising badge. Google's data-safety card lists Location, Personal info and two other types collected; Apple's tracking list adds User Content and Identifiers. Rated Teen on Play and 13+ by Apple, in 12 languages, with iOS 13 and Android 9 as generous floors and 1 GB on iPhone. Prices are regional and the Mystic Box contents rotate.

Pros

  • Co-op horror extraction with proximity voice chat, on a phone, with PC cross-play
  • 20+ folklore monsters with distinct rules — the Ghost Bride hunts one player only
  • Explorer, Supporter and Fighter roles and capturable monsters
  • iOS 13 and Android 9 floors with a 1 GB install
  • No advertising badge on either store

Cons

  • Dying loses your gear and buying it back is pricey, per September 2026 reviews
  • Random matchmaking often finds nobody; high ranks are not soloable
  • Mystic Boxes are loot boxes, with Aurion to $49.99 and a $9.99 VIP tier
  • A pet bought with real money does nothing against monsters

Verdict

A 6.7 for bringing horror extraction to phones properly — voice chat, cross-play, monsters with real rules — and for an economy that charges you to die and sells loot boxes on top. Take it if you have three friends and want Lethal Company's chaos in your pocket on almost any phone. Skip it if you would rely on matchmaking, if losing gear to a run and buying it back sounds like work, or if loot boxes and a VIP tier end the conversation.

Gameplay8Extraction runs with 20+ rule-bending monsters and three roles; the loop is Lethal Company's and it fits a phone.
Controls7Touch layout with proximity voice built in; the store pages do not state controller support.
Replay value7Deeper ruins, rarer relics and a season track; one player logged 100 hours, another could not find a lobby.
Graphics & sound8Candle-lit Chinese ruins and folklore monster designs in 1 GB; proximity voice does the scaring.
Monetisation4Gear buy-backs after death, loot-box Mystic Boxes, a VIP tier and Aurion to $49.99; a useless paid pet.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play Tomb Busters offline?

No. Even a solo run is an online session: the ruins, the relic economy, the season track and cross-play with PC all run on Giant Games' servers, and the proximity voice chat is the point of playing with others. Nothing on either store describes an offline mode, so a connection is required for every run.

2

Is Tomb Busters pay to win?

It is pay to recover: dying loses your gear, and a September 2026 review calls buying it back pricey. Aurion currency runs from $0.99 to $49.99 on the App Store, Mystic Boxes at $11.99 and $21.99 are loot boxes flagged by Apple, and a Luxury VIP tier costs $9.99. Giant Games has said death costs are under review. There is no PvP ladder, so the money buys survival of your loadout, not wins over players. Prices vary by region.

3

What phone do you need for Tomb Busters?

iOS 13 or newer with 1 GB free, or Android 9 or newer — among the lowest floors of any 2026 co-op game, which is how a Chinese title reached 200 million downloads. A microphone matters more than a GPU here, because proximity voice chat is the social layer; the store pages do not state controller support.

4

Can you play Tomb Busters with friends?

Yes — squads of up to four, with full cross-play between mobile and PC and proximity voice chat, and it is built to be played that way: a June 2026 review with 100-plus hours says high-rank dungeons cannot be cleared solo. The weak spot is strangers: a September 2026 review reports random matchmaking rarely fills, so bring your own squad.

5

How long does a Tomb Busters run take?

Runs are short — loot, extract, repeat — and the game is designed for sessions of a few runs rather than hours; the season track and deeper ruins are the long clock. A launch-day reviewer hit a progression bug at level 16 of the season, and the 100-hour reviewer from June 2026 is the upper end of what a squad with friends can get out of it.
