Among the Sleep Review: A Toddler's Horror in Three Hours, One $6.99 Unlock

Two Years Old, One Teddy Bear, No Weapons

The idea has not aged: you are a toddler who wakes in the night, and the house is wrong. Krillbite Studio's 2014 original — IGN called its childlike anxiety poignant, Eurogamer named the stumbling little legs its most intriguing idea — arrives on phones with the same shape: crawl to move fast, climb drawers and boxes to reach handles, hug the teddy bear to light the dark, hide from the shape that hunts you through a playground, a forest house and a closet. No combat; the tension is scale and sound. Snapbreak Games, the Swedish publisher of Lost in Play and Snufkin: Melody of Moominvalley, released it on June 2, 2026, in 20 languages, rated 13+ by Apple and Teen on Google Play, with the prologue included — a Play reviewer who finished it in August calls the whole thing a little short even with it.

Touch Only: the Tunnel, the Pivot and the Missing Controller

The port's problem is the hands. A July 8, 2026 Play review with ten helpful votes describes getting stuck in the crib tunnel, wiggling free, then giving up in the bedroom after failing to see what the drawers wanted — the controls are what ruins it, a 15-point pivot to turn around. An App Store reviewer on June 4 could not open the bedroom chest; two more on June 1 and 3 refused to buy until a controller works. Neither store lists gamepad support. The bugs are the other half of June: a Play player with 16 votes replayed the Forest House because the save failed, hit texture glitches in the Closet and lost the star key through a floor, recovering it only with Chapter Select. Version 1.0.9 on iOS, July 8, fixed an achievement bug; Android sits at 1.0.0.0.26 from August 11.

A Free Chapter, Then $6.99 — and Nothing Else to Buy

The economy is a demo and a price. The download is free and plays the first chapter — about twenty minutes — and the rest is one in-app purchase, listed at $6.99 on the App Store, with Google Play showing $4.99 to $6.99. Neither store carries an advertising badge, there is no currency and no loot-box flag, and Google's data-safety card declares nothing collected and nothing shared; Apple lists no tracking. Reviews split on that unlock: an August 8 reviewer calls it worth the cost for the beauty alone, while a run of one- and three-star reviews from players who expected a free game object to paying at all. The build is 1.2 GB on iPhone, iOS 15 or newer with Apple Silicon Macs supported, Android 7.1 or newer. Three months in: 100,000-plus installs and 4.7 from 4,390 Play reviews, 4.7 from 1,516 App Store ratings. Prices are regional.

Pros

  • Horror from a toddler's eye level — crawl, climb, hide — with no combat
  • One $6.99 unlock after a free first chapter; no ads, no currency
  • Nothing collected or shared, per Google's data-safety card
  • Prologue included, Chapter Select for lost progress
  • 4.7 on both stores from 4,390 Play and 1,516 App Store reviews

Cons

  • No controller support — first-person on touch alone
  • A 15-point pivot to turn and a crib tunnel that traps players, per Play reviews
  • June 2026 save failures, texture glitches and a lost key in the Closet
  • About three hours, prologue included, with easy puzzles

Verdict

A 6.5 for a good short horror story sold honestly — a free chapter, $6.99, no ads — and ported without the one thing a first-person game on a phone needs most, a controller. Take it if you want a few hours of dread at knee height and can forgive slow turns and a June's worth of bugs. Skip it if you play horror with a gamepad, or if three hours for $6.99 is the wrong ratio for you.

Gameplay7Crawl, climb and hide through a house that grows wrong; short, easy puzzles, per an August reviewer.
Controls5Touch only: unclear grabs, a slow pivot and no gamepad — the top complaint on both stores.
Replay value4One story, one ending, a few hours; Chapter Select is for recovery, not variety.
Graphics & sound8Warm lamplight and a tilting nursery in 1.2 GB; clipping in cutscenes, per a June review.
Monetisation8A free chapter, $6.99 for the rest, no ads, no tracking — the honest shape of a port.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play Among the Sleep offline?

The store pages do not state it, but nothing in the game needs a connection: single-player, no ads, no multiplayer, no live events, and Google's data-safety card lists nothing collected. The one online step is the $6.99 unlock. Buy it, then test in airplane mode — chapters load from the 1.2 GB install.

2

Is Among the Sleep free?

The first chapter is — about twenty minutes. The rest of the story, prologue included, is one in-app purchase listed at $6.99 on the App Store, with Google Play showing $4.99 to $6.99. There are no ads, no currency and no other purchases. Several one-star reviews on both stores are from players who expected the whole game free. Prices vary by region.

3

What phone do you need for Among the Sleep?

iOS 15 or newer with 1.2 GB free, or Android 7.1 or newer; Apple Silicon Macs run it too. The hardware is not the obstacle — the controls are. No controller is supported, so a first-person horror game is played on glass, with a slow pivot and grab states that a June reviewer found unclear.

4

Can you play Among the Sleep with friends?

No. It is a single-player story with one save; there is no co-op, no multiplayer and no sharing feature on either store. The only companion is the teddy bear, who talks, lights the dark when hugged and is the emotional core of the ending.

5

How long is Among the Sleep?

A few hours — a Play reviewer who finished the main story in August 2026 called it a little short even with the prologue, and the free chapter is about twenty minutes of that. Chapters are ten to thirty minutes each, with Chapter Select to return to any of them, so it fits two or three evenings.
