Fishdom Review: Match Three, Then Decorate the Tank

The Tank Is the Point of the Boards

Levels are compact match-three grids with pearls, shells and starfish, a goal printed above — sixteen pearls, twelve shells, twenty moves — and boosters in a row beneath. Winning pays currency, and currency buys fish and ornaments for the aquarium: rocks, plants, a sunken ship, a decorated arctic scene with penguins and a polar bear for a themed tank. Fish swim about, react to feeding and behave more like pets than trophies, which is a stronger hook than a number climbing on a progress bar. Feeding and cleaning the tank are small chores between levels, and neglecting them dulls the fish rather than losing anything.

Stages Add Gathering and Selling

Newer sequences work like a small business simulation: net clownfish from a rock pool, carry them to the shop, serve a queue of customers paying in cash, dive for pearls and treasure on the sea floor and sell what you find. Counters track the money — 50, 280, 350, 760 across the store screens — and the stage ends when the orders are filled. It is the same structure the studio uses in its garden game, adapted to water, and it exists to vary a decade-old puzzle loop.

No Adverts, Diamonds to $15.99

Google Play carries no advertising badge, so the money comes from diamonds and bundles: the App Store lists a few diamonds at $0.99 to $1.99, a handful at $4.99, a fishy bank at $2.99 and collections from $5.99 to $15.99. Apple rates it 13+ with frequent contests and loot boxes, on a 330.4 MB install. The numbers are large but a step below the studio's garden title — 100 million Play installs, 4.6 stars from 6.72 million reviews, and 4.6 from 1.15 million App Store ratings.

Pros

  • Fish behave like pets rather than collectible trophies
  • No advertising badge on the Play listing
  • Gathering stages break up the match-three levels
  • Themed tanks from coral reefs to arctic scenes
  • Rated 4.6 on both stores across 7.8 million ratings

Cons

  • Lives limit how often you can fail a level
  • Themed collections and bundles reach $15.99
  • Apple lists loot boxes among the contents
  • Decoration choices are cosmetic rather than strategic

Verdict

The most likeable of the decorate-and-match games, mainly because fish make better rewards than furniture — they move, they react, and a finished tank is worth looking at. The economy is the studio's usual: lives, boosters, diamond bundles to $15.99, and no adverts at all. Fine free, provided you treat the life counter as a stopping signal.

Gameplay7.5Competent match-three whose reward loop is the aquarium rather than the score.
Controls8.5Swap and swipe with generous targets; dragging in the stages is just as forgiving.
Replay value7.5Thousands of levels and multiple tanks, though the loop rarely changes shape.
Graphics & sound8.5The best-looking aquariums on a phone, with fish animated individually.
Monetisation6.0No adverts, but lives and diamond bundles to $15.99 pace everything.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can it be played offline?

Loaded levels usually play without a signal, but the aquarium, progress and events sync with the server, so long offline sessions are unreliable. Anything involving purchases or timed events needs a connection outright.

2

What does it sell?

Diamonds from $0.99 to $4.99, a diamond bank at $2.99, and themed collections between $5.99 and $15.99. Diamonds buy lives, boosters and decorations. Nothing sold is required to finish a tank — it shortens the wait between levels.

3

What does it need to run?

330.4 MB and iOS 13 or later. The aquarium rendering is the most demanding part, and it scales down on older phones without much loss — the fish keep swimming, they simply look less detailed.

4

Is there anything social?

Team events and leaderboards compare progress asynchronously, and teammates can send lives. Nobody visits your aquarium, which is a missed opportunity given that decorating a tank is the entire reward loop.

5

How long is a level?

One to three minutes, and the gathering stages a little longer. Lives set the session length as in every game of this kind, so a natural visit is a few levels, a bit of decorating, and out.
