About Royal Kingdom

Royal Kingdom is Dream Games' second match-three title, built around rescuing a king trapped behind stone, lava and a snake rather than clearing a board for its own sake. Matches break the barrier holding him, so each level reads as a small extraction. It has passed 100 million Android installs, carries no advertising, and sells coins and passes from $1.99 to $19.99.

Royal Kingdom Review: Match Three to Dig a King Out

Every Level Is a Rescue, Not a Board

The framing does more work than it sounds like it should. The king stands at the edge of the screen behind loose rock, rising lava or a snake, and each match collapses part of what is trapping him — stones tumble, the wall drops, the path clears. Progress is visible in the scene rather than in a counter at the top, which makes a failed attempt read as unfinished work instead of a lost score. The board itself is standard match-three with power-ups from larger matches; the difference is entirely in what the matches are doing.

Coins and Passes From $1.99 to $19.99

There is no advertising here — the Play listing carries no Contains ads badge, which is unusual for a free puzzle game and means the money comes from purchases only. The ladder runs from a Mini Coin Pack at $1.99 through a Noble Pack at $5.99, King's Favor at $6.99, a Small Coin Package at $7.99, a Splendid Pouch and the Kingdom Pass at $9.99 each, up to a Superior Chest at $19.99, with rotating offers at $2.99 and $6.99. Coins buy continues and boosters, which is where a hard level turns into a decision. Prices are US listings.

No Ads, but Apple Says It Tracks You

The absence of advertising inside the game does not mean the absence of advertising data. Apple's privacy card states the app tracks users across other companies' apps and websites using purchase history and device identifiers, and Google Play lists seven collected categories with location and device identifiers shared with third parties. There is also no offline mode: players report the game refuses to start without data or Wi-Fi, so a level cannot be attempted on a plane. Both facts are worth weighing against the clean, ad-free surface.

Pros

  • No advertising interrupts a level at any point
  • Rescue framing makes progress visible inside the scene
  • Rated 4.7 on the App Store across a million ratings
  • Levels are short enough for a single commute stop
  • Free to play with no purchase required to progress

Cons

  • Coins and passes run from $1.99 to $19.99
  • Apple states the app tracks you across other apps
  • Location and device identifiers shared with third parties
  • Players report it will not start without a connection

Verdict

A better-than-average match-three, and the ad-free listing is worth real money in this genre — nothing stops a level to show a video. The rescue framing keeps boards from blurring together for the first few hundred levels. Weigh two things: Apple states the game tracks you across other apps despite showing none itself, and it will not open without a connection, so it is no use as a travel game.

Gameplay8.0Familiar match-three mechanics given a purpose by the rescue framing around each board.
Controls8.5Swipe matching is precise, and boosters fire where you aim them on a small screen.
Replay value7.5Hundreds of levels arriving in batches, though the loop varies less than the scenes suggest.
Graphics & sound8.0Crisp scenes with collapsing rock and lava that make each clear feel physical.
Monetisation6.0No ads, but coins buy continues on hard levels and purchases reach $19.99.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play Royal Kingdom offline?

In practice, no. Players report that the game will not start with data and Wi-Fi turned off, and progress is held against an online account rather than on the device. If you need a puzzle game for flights or the underground, this is the wrong one — the levels themselves would work offline, but the app declines to open.

2

Is Royal Kingdom free?

Yes, and unusually for a free puzzle game there is no advertising at all. Money enters through coins and passes: $1.99 for the smallest coin pack, $5.99 to $9.99 for mid-tier bundles and the Kingdom Pass, and $19.99 for the largest chest. Coins mainly buy continues and boosters when a level resists.

3

What phone does it need?

It supports older iPhones going back several generations and has passed 100 million Android installs, so hardware is rarely the barrier. The install is modest by modern standards. What it does need is a stable connection every session, which matters more than the phone itself.

4

Can you play with friends?

Not directly — levels are solo. The social layer is competitive rather than cooperative: leaderboards and timed events measure your progress against other players' rather than letting you play a board together. Progress is tied to an account, so it can follow you to another device.

5

How long does a level take?

Most run one to three minutes, which makes the game a natural fit for short gaps rather than long sessions. The pacing changes when a level resists: the choice is then to wait, restart, or spend coins on a continue. That decision, rather than the level length, is what sets how long an evening runs.
