About Toon Blast

Not a match-three: tap any group of two or more touching cubes of one colour and they vanish, which makes every board a question of order rather than of spotting pairs. Cartoon characters, tournaments up a tower and thousands of levels sit around it. Free with advertising, coins from $1.99, and a 515.7 MB install.

Toon Blast Review: Tap to Blast, Not Swap to Match

Tapping Groups Changes the Whole Puzzle

There is no swapping. Any two adjacent cubes of the same colour can be cleared with a tap, and larger groups produce rockets, bombs and discs that clear rows or wide areas. Because you are choosing which group to remove rather than hunting for a legal move, the decision is about what the board collapses into afterwards — clearing a big pink block first may strand the yellows you needed. Goals are printed at the top with a move counter, and a level with fifty-two of one colour to remove in twenty-six moves is a planning exercise, not a search.

Characters, Towers and Team Play

A cast of cartoon animals fronts the levels and unlocks as you go, each with a signature booster, and a tournament tower runs alongside the campaign with score thresholds at each floor — 6,570 to reach one level, 10,000 for the next. Teams pool progress and swap lives. It is the standard live-service scaffolding, executed brightly enough that the bear in a superhero cape is genuinely funny rather than merely present, which matters more than it should in a genre where every game looks alike.

Adverts, Coins and 515.7 MB

Google Play carries an advertising badge alongside in-app purchases, against 100 million installs and 4.6 stars from 4.64 million reviews; Apple shows 4.7 from 2.8 million ratings and rates it 4+ with advertising, chat and user-generated content listed. Purchases are coin packs from $1.99 to $7.99 and bundles between $4.99 and $19.99, spent on lives and boosters. The install is 515.7 MB — heavy for coloured cubes, and heavier than either of the big renovation match-threes in this catalogue. Both store averages sit within a tenth of each other, which for a free game with adverts on both platforms is unusually consistent.

Pros

  • Tapping groups makes order matter more than spotting
  • Boosters combine into wide, satisfying clears
  • Tournaments give levels a weekly stake
  • Rated 4.7 on the App Store across 2.8 million ratings
  • Characters give a generic genre some personality

Cons

  • A 515.7 MB install for a cube puzzle
  • Lives cap how often you can fail
  • Coin bundles reach $19.99 a purchase
  • Advertising appears between levels on the free tier

Verdict

The rule change is the reason to pick this over a swap-based match-three: tapping groups turns each board into a question of sequence, and the boosters chain into clears that feel earned. Everything else is genre standard — lives, adverts, bundles to $19.99 — and the 515.7 MB install is hard to justify for cubes. Worth choosing over its swap-based rivals if you want the boards to require a plan.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can it be played offline?

Levels already loaded generally play without a signal, but progress, teams and tournaments sync with the server. The adverts cannot load offline either, which is the usual quiet workaround in this genre.

2

What does it sell?

Coin packs from $1.99 to $7.99 and bundles between $4.99 and $19.99, spent on lives, boosters and tournament entries. Nothing sold unlocks levels — the purchases shorten the wait after a failure or rescue a level in progress.

3

How much space does it need?

515.7 MB and iOS 15 or later, which is large for a puzzle game about coloured cubes and worth checking before installing. It runs on modest hardware once downloaded, since the boards themselves demand very little.

4

Is there team play?

Teams pool progress toward shared goals, send each other lives and compete in the tournament tower as groups. There is no live head-to-head mode; everything social happens between sessions rather than during a level.

5

How long is a level?

One to three minutes, with tournaments encouraging several in a row. Lives set the natural stopping point, refilling over time — the same rhythm as every game in this genre, which is short visits several times a day.
