About Hellguard: ARPG Hack and Slash

Hellguard is Black Anvil Studio's dark-fantasy action RPG for Android with a promise in its first line — no autoplay, no idle combat — where an order of exiled demon hunters fights bosses, builds skill trees, hunts affix loot, and plays solo, in co-op or in PvP arenas, free with ads and packs to $269.99, at version 3.0 since September 2026. It has 3,120 Google Play reviews at 4.3 and no iOS version. Players call the combat exciting and Souls-like; the most-voted review found that a third hero means a 0.19 percent gacha chance or a $30 offer.

Hellguard Review: Hands-On Souls-Lite Combat, Heroes Behind a 0.19 Percent Pull

No Autoplay: Dodge, Strike, Build the Tree, Hunt the Affixes

The design is stated as a refusal: every dodge, attack and decision is yours, with no auto-battle and no idle mode, in a realistic dark-fantasy world where the Hellguard — an exiled order — hunts demons, the undead and forgotten evils after a stolen relic threatens to wake something old. Bosses are the PvE core, timed and punishing — and the build is the progression: a hexagonal skill tree with skill points, and gear with rare affixes that change how you fight; loot drops from enemies and quests, and September's version 3.0 added a new quest tree with story branches, character appearances and the ability to change item looks. There is co-op against bosses and PvP arenas. A May 23, 2026 three-star with five votes calls the mechanics pretty good and the battles pretty exciting; a September 11 four-star loves these Souls-like games and, after version 1.2.0 made the UI customisable and improved foldable-screen support, calls the gameplay much better.

A Third Hero at 0.19 Percent or $30, and an App That Used to Vanish

The economy complaint is precise. An August 23 two-star with five votes came back to see if the game was fixed and found that even with both starter characters at maximum level, there is not enough currency to unlock a new one — the options are a gacha at 0.19 percent, or an offer to buy a hero for $30, which severely limits the game; Jet Games' reply is that heroes also come through daily rewards and progression, with the Shaman free on day seven. The stability complaint is older: the May three-star says the game's integrity stinks because switching to another app for 30 seconds makes it disappear and forces a level restart; the developer says version 1.2.4 improved background behaviour. Graphics are mid, says the May reviewer, but nothing in the visible reviews faults the combat itself.

Ads, Packs to $269.99, $30 Hero Offers, and a Light Data Card

Both advertising and in-app purchases are listed, with items from $0.99 to $269.99 on Google Play — the hero offers at $30 sit in the middle of that range — and the ads are the rewarded kind that a no-autoplay game leans on for currency. Google's data card lists app activity and app info collected, with nothing shared, which is lighter than most in the genre. The floor is Android 9; no size is published; rated Teen for violence and mild blood, with user interaction flagged for co-op and PvP. There is no iOS version. Play shows 100,000-plus installs. Jet Games FZ-LLC of Dubai publishes for Black Anvil Studio. Prices are regional.

Pros

  • No autoplay — dodges and strikes are yours, in boss fights reviewers call exciting
  • A hex skill tree, ultimates and affix loot that make a build worth planning
  • Co-op boss fights and PvP arenas for anyone who wants company
  • Customisable controls since 1.2.0, with foldable support improved
  • A developer who replies to every review and ships monthly

Cons

  • A third hero costs a 0.19 percent pull or a $30 offer, per the most-voted review
  • Ads and packs to $269.99 on a game that says only your skill matters
  • Mid graphics, per a fan of the combat
  • Android only, with a history of the app vanishing on task switch

Verdict

A 5.6: a real action RPG on a phone — no autoplay, bosses that test you, builds that matter — with a hero roster priced at a 0.19 percent pull or $30 apiece, which its most-voted reviewer says limits the game more than any boss. Take it if you want Souls-lite combat on Android and will live with two heroes. Skip it if the roster is the point of an ARPG for you, or if you are on iPhone — there is no version.

Gameplay7Real action-RPG combat with bosses that punish timing — the promise the listing makes, kept.
Controls6Customisable buttons since 1.2.0; foldables still not fully served.
Replay value6Quest branches, builds, co-op and arenas — gated by a hero roster that costs pulls or dollars.
Graphics & sound6Realistic dark fantasy in grey and torchlight; mid, in a fan's word.
Monetisation3A 0.19 percent hero gacha, $30 offers, ads and a $269.99 ceiling under a no-autoplay banner.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can you play Hellguard offline?

No. The listing calls it an online action-RPG looter — co-op, PvP arenas, daily rewards and the shop run on Jet Games' servers — and the May 2026 complaint about the app vanishing on a task switch was a session-drop problem. There is no offline mode.

2

Is Hellguard pay to win?

For the roster, by the most-voted review: a new hero after the two starters means a 0.19 percent gacha chance or a $30 offer, though the developer points to free unlocks such as the Shaman on day seven. Packs run $0.99 to $269.99 with ads. In PvP arenas, bought heroes and affixes show. Prices vary by region.

3

What phone do you need for Hellguard?

Android 9 or newer; no size is published. A September 2026 reviewer on a Samsung Fold found the UI fixed by version 1.2.0 but foldables still not fully supported. No review reports frame-rate trouble; the May complaint about losing progress on a task switch was addressed in 1.2.4. There is no iPhone version.

4

Can you play Hellguard with friends?

Yes — co-op boss battles with friends and PvP arenas against other players are both listed, and Google Play flags user interaction. The campaign and its new quest branches are solo; bosses are where friends join.

5

How long does Hellguard take?

The two starter heroes reach maximum level in a few weeks of sessions, per an August 2026 reviewer who then hit the roster wall; version 3.0's quest tree and story branches add more. Boss fights are minutes each, and losing a level to a task switch — a May complaint since patched — is no longer part of the count.
