Honkai: Star Rail Review: Turn-Based, 3.7 GB, 0.6%

Turns Instead of Reflexes

Combat runs on a turn order shown along the top: characters act in sequence, weaknesses are broken by matching an element, and ultimate abilities are held and spent at chosen moments. Nothing depends on tapping quickly, which makes it the most phone-appropriate design among the large role-playing games here — a fight can be paused by putting the device down. The worlds are distinct and heavily written, with a space station, a frozen planet and a neon city among them, and the voice acting covers the main story rather than sampling it.

The Story Is the Product

Each region carries hours of scripted quests with cutscenes, character arcs and a soundtrack recorded for it, and the whole thing is free — nothing in the campaign sits behind a payment. That is the same arrangement its studio uses elsewhere and it remains unusual: an enormous amount of authored content given away, with the money collected entirely on the character banner. Events add limited-time stories on a roughly six-week cadence, which is also how often the banner rotates. Progress carries across phone, computer and console on one account, so a chapter started on a commute can be finished on a television.

0.6%, and a 3.7 Rating on Play

The published five-star rate is 0.6% with a guarantee at 90 pulls, and the App Store lists shards from $0.99 to $99.99, a $4.99 monthly pass, and battle passes at $9.99 and $19.99. Apple rates the game 13+ and lists loot boxes. The store averages split sharply — 3.7 stars from 522,000 Google Play reviews against 4.4 from 53,000 App Store ratings — and the Android reviews concentrate on banner rates and the pace of free currency rather than on the game itself. Neither figure has moved much across the game's three years, which suggests a settled audience rather than a collapsing one.

Verdict

The most phone-friendly of the big role-playing gachas: turns rather than reflexes, a fully voiced free campaign, and worlds worth exploring for their own sake. The banner is the same arrangement as everywhere else — 0.6%, ninety pulls, and a 3.7 Android average that reflects how players feel about it. Play the story free and treat the banners as decoration.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can it be played offline?

No. Even the single-player story runs against the server, so an unstable connection interrupts cutscenes and combat alike. Progress is saved to the account, which does mean the same save continues on a computer or console.

2

What does it sell?

Shards from $0.99 to $99.99 that convert into wishes on character banners, a $4.99 monthly pass and battle passes at $9.99 and $19.99. Nothing in the story is paid. The money buys chances at characters, at a published rate of 0.6% for a five-star.

3

How much space does it need?

3.7 GB and iOS 13 or later, growing with every major update. It is among the heaviest games in this catalogue, and older phones will run it with reduced effects rather than refusing outright.

4

Is there multiplayer?

Effectively none. This is a single-player game with friend lists used to borrow a character for a fight. Nobody joins your world, and there is no competitive mode — which for a turn-based story game is a reasonable design choice rather than an omission.

5

How long is a session?

Daily tasks and the stamina currency shape a routine of twenty to thirty minutes, after which the rewards dry up. Story chapters have no such cap and can absorb an evening, which is where most of the game's value sits.
