Pokémon GO turns walking into the game: creatures appear at real places, raids gather strangers at landmarks, and the calendar of events replaces a story. Ten years in it belongs to Scopely rather than Niantic. Coins run $0.99 to $39.99, the better event days sell tickets from $4.99, and its Google Play average sits at 3.6.

Everything is tied to physical movement: creatures appear where you are, eggs hatch by distance covered, and gyms and raid battles sit on real landmarks that have to be reached on foot. That constraint is the whole design, and it is also the cost — continuous location access, a live connection and a battery that empties faster than any other game in this catalogue. Raids show why the crowd matters: a defender listed at 56,009 combat power against an attacker at 2,949 is not a fight one phone wins. Max Battles add a meter that fills through cooperative damage.
The calendar now drives the game more than the catching does. Community days, seasons and anniversaries arrive on a schedule — the current one is the tenth, badged Forever Forward — and the best-rewarded days are ticketed. The App Store lists event tickets at $4.99, evergreen tickets at $1.99 and finale passes at $14.99 and $19.99, alongside coin packs from $0.99 to $39.99. Mega Evolution and Team GO Rocket battles are the mechanical layers stacked onto the original loop, and both are tuned around those scheduled days rather than around ordinary play.
In May 2025 Scopely completed a $3.5 billion purchase of Niantic's games division, taking this game along with Pikmin Bloom and Monster Hunter Now, while Niantic's remaining mapping technology spun off as a separate company. What that means in practice is that a live-operations publisher now sets the event calendar. The Google Play average is 3.6 from 15.4 million reviews, remarkably low for a game with 500 million installs, against 4.0 from 652,000 ratings on Apple. The install is 443.3 MB with no advertising badge on either store.

Still the only game that gets people outside in groups, and after ten years the catching loop holds up. What has changed is the framing around it: a ticketed event calendar, coin packs to $39.99, and a new owner whose business is live operations. The 3.6 Play average across fifteen million reviews is the community's own verdict on that shift. Free to play well; expensive to play optimally.

No. The game needs both a live connection and GPS, because everything is validated against your real position on a server-held map. Losing signal mid-walk stops encounters entirely, and the game is explicit that location access is not optional.
Coins, from 100 at $0.99 to 5,200 at $39.99, spent on storage, incubators and items. Separately, the bigger scheduled events sell tickets — $4.99 for a typical one, $14.99 and $19.99 for finale passes — which gate the best rewards rather than the game itself.
443.3 MB and iOS 15 or later on iPhone, plus GPS and a tolerance for battery drain — an hour of active play is expensive on any handset. A battery pack is standard equipment for the community days the game is built around.
It is close to mandatory. Raid bosses are tuned far beyond a single trainer's team, so a landmark with a group forming is the difference between a legendary catch and a wasted pass. Friend lists, gift exchanges and remote raid invitations all support playing with people elsewhere.
It runs alongside a walk rather than instead of one: a few minutes of catching on a commute, longer on a scheduled event day. The calendar is the real time commitment, because the strongest rewards land in three-hour windows announced in advance.
