Marvel Contest of Champions Review: 300+ Fighters, 2.6 GB

A Real Fighting Game Under the Licence

Combat is one against one on a two-dimensional plane: tap the right side to attack, swipe back to dash away, hold to block, and time a parry against a heavy attack to open a combo window. Special moves charge on a meter, and each character has a distinct set — a web-slinger plays nothing like a hulk. It is deeper than a licensed tie-in has any obligation to be, and the difficulty in later quests genuinely requires learning the timing rather than out-levelling it. Energy limits how many fights a session holds, which is the one place the free-to-play scaffolding intrudes on the fighting itself.

Three Hundred Champions and a Quest Map

The roster is the collection: more than three hundred characters across heroes and villains, each with rarity tiers, ranks and signature abilities, assembled into teams of three or five for the campaign. The story is laid out as acts — the contest, escalation, an end game, a rebellion — with each act a map of nodes to clear. Alliances add cooperative quests and wars against other groups, which is where the long-term players spend their time. Ranking a champion up requires materials farmed from specific quests, so a favourite character becomes a project rather than a purchase.

No Adverts, and Ten Years of Updates

Google Play carries no advertising badge against 100 million installs and 4.2 stars from 3.23 million reviews; the App Store shows 4.7 from 713,000 ratings on a 2.6 GB install rated 13+. Purchases are units and crystals that yield random champions, which the listing describes plainly as a random selection of virtual items. The half-point gap between the two stores is the widest thing in the numbers, and the update cadence is the most reassuring: a decade in, new champions still arrive monthly.

Pros

  • Combat timing genuinely rewards learning parries
  • More than three hundred distinct champions
  • No advertising badge on either store
  • Alliance quests and wars for long-term play
  • Rated 4.7 on the App Store across 713,000 ratings

Cons

  • Champions arrive from crystals with random contents
  • A 2.6 GB install before seasonal content
  • Rated 4.2 on Play, half a point below Apple
  • Later quests assume a deep, ranked roster

Verdict

A genuinely good fighting game wearing a licence, and after a decade the combat still holds up — parries and dash timing matter more than raw statistics until very late. The roster comes from crystals with random contents, which is the cost of a three-hundred-character collection. No advertising anywhere, which for a free game of this size is worth stating plainly.

Gameplay8.0A fighting game with real timing under the licence, not a tap-to-win skin.
Controls8.0Tap, hold and swipe cover attack, block and dash without a virtual stick.
Replay value8.0A decade of acts, monthly champions and alliance wars to grind.
Graphics & sound8.0Detailed character models and effects, which explains 2.6 GB.
Monetisation5.5Crystals with random contents drive the roster, though no adverts appear.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can it be played offline?

No. The roster, quests and alliance systems all live on the server, so a connection is needed even for single-player fights. A dropped signal mid-fight can cost the energy spent entering it.

2

What does it sell?

Units and crystals, which open into random champions and upgrade material. The store listing describes them as a random selection of virtual items — the standard formulation for loot boxes. Nothing in the campaign is paid content directly.

3

How much space does it need?

2.6 GB and iOS 15 or later. Three hundred fully animated characters is where the size goes, and older phones will reduce effects rather than refuse to run the fights.

4

Is there team play?

Yes. Alliances run cooperative quests where members clear sections of a shared map, and alliance wars pit groups against each other with defensive placements. It is the main reason long-term players stay, and it comes with a schedule.

5

How long is a fight?

A minute or two, with energy limiting how many quest nodes you can clear in a session. Alliance events are the longer commitment, running to fixed timetables that expect members to be available.
