About Whiteout Survival

A frozen apocalypse where everything orbits one fire: keep the furnace burning, build shelters and hunting huts around it, assign named survivors to workstations, then march armies across a shared map. The temperature readout sits at the top — minus ninety and falling. No adverts, packs from $0.99 to $99.99, and a 1 GB install. Google Play rates it 4.1; the App Store, 4.6.

Whiteout Survival Review: One Fire, Minus Ninety Degrees

The Furnace Is the Clock and the Score

Every building is placed in a ring around a central fire, and the temperature — minus 104 in one store screen, minus 92.56 in another — governs what survives outside it. Keeping the furnace fed pulls in wood, coal and hunting parties, and each upgrade widens the habitable circle. It is a genuinely good framing device for a base builder: instead of an abstract town hall level, there is a physical fire and a number that tells you how close everyone is to freezing. The early hours teach the loop clearly before the timers lengthen.

Survivors Are Named and Assigned

Workstations take individual survivors — Andy, Sean, Annie in the store screens — dragged onto benches and beds, with idle slots showing plainly where labour is missing. That personalisation is the second good decision: a settlement of named people reads differently from a resource counter, and it makes the workforce screen the one you check first. Heroes lead armies on the world map, where alliances mark territory and troop stacks converge on a burning objective, and battles resolve as formations with health bars rather than as a single number.

No Adverts, Packs to $99.99, and a 4.1 Rating

Google Play carries no advertising badge, so the money is entirely in packs: the App Store lists standard packs from $0.99 to $99.99, a regular pass at $4.99 and a daily offering at $4.99. Apple rates it 9+ and names loot boxes; the install is 1 GB. The stores disagree sharply — 4.1 stars from 1.56 million Play reviews against 4.6 from 457,000 App Store ratings — and the Android complaints follow the usual pattern for the genre, which is how much progress stalls once the free build queue empties.

Verdict

The best-framed of the survival base builders: a single fire, a falling temperature and named survivors give the usual 4X structure something to hold onto. The first week is genuinely good. After that it settles into timers, alliance obligations and packs reaching $99.99, which is where the Android rating of 4.1 comes from. Worth trying free; expect the ceiling.

Gameplay7.5A base builder with an unusually good framing device and ordinary long-term timers.
Controls8.0Drag survivors, tap buildings; the workforce screen is the clearest part.
Replay value7.5Seasons, alliance wars and a settlement that keeps expanding for months.
Graphics & sound8.0Convincing snow, firelight and scale on a phone screen.
Monetisation4.5Loot boxes, passes and packs to $99.99 with timers that reward paying.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can it be played offline?

No. The settlement, the world map and every alliance interaction live on the server, so a connection is required throughout. Resources continue accumulating while the app is closed, which is the closest thing to offline progress here.

2

What does it sell?

Resource and speed-up packs from $0.99 to $99.99, a regular pass at $4.99 and a daily offering at $4.99. Apple lists loot boxes, which is how hero fragments and rarer items are distributed. Nothing is required, but timers make paying feel necessary.

3

How much space does it need?

1 GB and iOS 13 or later, growing with updates. That places it among the heavier games in this catalogue, and the snow and firelight effects are what account for it — the base itself is not technically demanding.

4

Is an alliance necessary?

Effectively yes. Alliances share resource help that shortens build timers, defend territory together and organise the events that provide the best rewards. Playing solo is possible for the first week and untenable once the world map matters.

5

How much time does it take?

A few short visits a day to start builds, collect resources and reassign survivors, plus longer sessions during alliance events. The design assumes months of daily attention rather than a finished campaign, which is the genre's standard commitment.
