About Age of Empires Mobile

The licensed name on a mobile 4X: farms, villagers, walls and a town centre rendered in the series' isometric style, with conquest and expansion on a shared map. It looks like the strategy game people remember. It is scored like the genre it actually belongs to — 3.7 on the App Store, 4.1 on Google Play.

Age of Empires Mobile Review: The Name, Not the Game

The Art Is Genuinely the Series

Farms laid out in squares with villagers walking between them, a town centre upgrading behind wooden walls, stone towers and marketplaces, all in a clean isometric view that would be recognisable to anyone who played the strategy game in the 1990s. Exploration reveals terrain around the settlement — a lake, a bridge, a forest — and settlements burn convincingly when attacked. As presentation, this is the most faithful adaptation of a classic strategy licence in this catalogue. Sound design follows suit, with the villager acknowledgements and construction noises the series trained a generation to recognise.

What It Plays Like Underneath

The resemblance stops at the surface. There is no base-building in real time against an opponent, no unit micromanagement, no scenario campaign of the kind the licence is known for. Instead: construction timers, hero cards to collect and level, resource nodes on a world map, alliances that hold territory, and events that run at fixed hours. Anyone arriving because of the name will recognise the buildings and none of the decisions, which is what the ratings reflect more than any technical fault. The pace is the giveaway: decisions are made once a day rather than once a second, which is the opposite of what the name suggests.

3.7 on Apple, 4.1 on Play

Both figures are low for a major licence: 3.7 from 17,702 App Store ratings and 4.1 from 460,000 Google Play reviews on 10 million installs. Apple lists loot boxes and chat at a 9+ rating; there is no advertising badge on Play. Purchases run the full ladder from $0.99 to $99.99, the install is 1.2 GB, and the last Play update recorded is 15 July 2026 — a slower cadence than the rival strategy games here, which update monthly. For a licence this large, a slower update cadence usually signals a game being maintained rather than grown.

Pros

  • Isometric art faithful to the original series
  • Exploration reveals terrain around the settlement
  • No advertising badge on the Play listing
  • Alliance warfare on a persistent shared map
  • Runs on mid-range hardware despite the detail

Cons

  • Rated 3.7 on the App Store, low for a major licence
  • No real-time base building or unit control
  • Purchase packages climb to $99.99 each
  • Updated less often than its direct rivals

Verdict

The most faithful-looking use of a strategy licence on a phone, and underneath it the same timer-driven 4X as every rival in this catalogue. If you want the art and the name attached to an alliance game, it works. If you came expecting to build a base in real time and command units, the 3.7 App Store average is telling you what other people found.

Gameplay7.0A competent mobile 4X wearing a licence that promises something else entirely.
Controls7.5Standard map dragging and menu tapping; nothing awkward, nothing notable.
Replay value7.0Seasons and alliance events, paced by timers rather than by scenarios.
Graphics & sound8.0The strongest part: art and audio that genuinely evoke the original games.
Monetisation4.5Loot boxes, packs to $99.99 and timers that make speed-ups the point.

Frequently asked questions

1

Can it be played offline?

No. The settlement and the world map are server-side and shared with other players, so a connection is required throughout. Construction and research continue while the app is closed, which is the only progress that happens without you.

2

What does it sell?

Resource and speed-up packages from $0.99 to $99.99, with hero material among them. Apple lists loot boxes, so the better commanders arrive by chance. There is no advertising, which means packs are the entire business model.

3

How much space does it need?

1.2 GB and iOS 13 or later. The isometric art is what fills it, and the game runs acceptably on mid-range Android phones — the detail scales down rather than stuttering, which is more than several rivals manage.

4

Do alliances matter?

Yes, in the same way as every game of this shape: alliances speed construction, hold map territory and run the scheduled events worth attending. Solo play is possible early and pointless later, which is the genre convention rather than a design choice here.

5

How much time does it take?

Several short daily visits to restart timers, plus fixed-hour events for alliance members. Nothing about the pacing resembles the sit-down sessions the original games were built around, which is the expectation the licence sets and this cannot meet.
